Ultimately I don't believe health care should be a matter of insurance, so I can't say I strongly disagree with you.
I went for years without insurance too. While uninsured, I got hit by a truck while bicycling. It was a hit and run. I went to the hospital to get x-rayed, and they billed me two grand. Maybe that's chump change to you, but it isn't to me. Why the hell should I be out a shitload of money, which I can't afford, because of some asshole? Of course I had the option of simply not going to the hospital and "hoping" there was no permanent damage to my leg that a truck slammed into, but that's hardly advisable.
Even if I was insured, under your a la carte insurance proposal, maybe I wouldn't have had x-ray insurance, or maybe I wouldn't have had being-hit-by-a-motorist insurance.
Just because I don't agree with you, doesn't mean I agree with the health care reform that was passed. Or I may agree with parts of it and disagree with others. Either way, your argument is not against what the people you're arguing with are actually saying.
Through taxation, you buy lots of tanks and missiles. If that's okay, why not health care?
