The Greatest Systems- Your list?

This may be kinda nutty to post this on a Sega page...but i'll do it anyway.

What are your favorite systems, evah?

I'm never entirely sure where mine are ranked, but i'll give it a go:

Playstation 2(counting the PS1 catalog also)
Super Nintendo
Sega Genesis

After that, it gets pretty sketchy. Playstation 1 was great, but it's games have aged really poorly, both in graphics and in gameplay for some of them. But there are some that still hold up really well. But who can stomach FF VII's visuals nowadays?

Saturn/Dreamcast/Gamecube.... all have kind of small libraries. Saturn is a supreme shmup machine though. Gamecube may be the best all-around of those.

Xbox..eh...not enough games that I like.

Wii...I think the Wii sucks, but I have one for emulation.

Xbox 360 and PS3 are both good. A Japanese 360 has some great shmups on it. PS3 is getting better. But this gen is kind of slow and weak, compared to the last one.

But that's just my overall thoughts. Those first three are definitely the best, for me.

I'm not really counting handhelds, but the DS, with GBA backward compatibility is pretty awesome.

I couldn't stomach FF VII's graphics or audio quality when it was new, but I played it through anyway only to be ultimately disappointed by the non-ending.

I think I would would have to list my systems one of two ways, most played and most games I own for them.

Most Played:
Genesis - Sega CD - 32X
Saturn
Dreamcast
Master System
TG16-DUO
SNES
NES
Xbox 360
Xbox
PS2
Gamecube
3DO
Jaguar

And I don't want to figure out what I own the most for, but it would probably be the top three on this list.

For me it's based on how many games on each system I really dig/own.

Genesis - Sega CD - 32X
SNES
PS2
PS3
GBA

For the top spots, the rest all just fall into about equal standing, ie: The Gamecube, Dreamcast, NES, SMS, Game Gear

My favorite system would have to be the Sega Saturn. But after that I rank most of them about equally as each has it's upside.

For great one player games I generally turn to the following systems:

Playstation 1 and 2
Sega Dreamcast
NES
Xbox 360

For great multiplayer games I generally turn to these:
Sega Saturn
Gamecube
Nintendo 64
Wii
NES
Xbox 360

For great Arcade style games I generally turn to these:
Sega Saturn
Sega Genesis
Sega Dreamcast
Xbox 360

I can't really rate them better than each other as it entirely depends on my mood for which one I like better at a given moment.

My list with minor explanation:
1. PC-Engine/CD ~ so many classic pick up n play games, epic lifespan.
2. Sega Saturn ~ quick loading, great arcade library, culmination of 2-D design sensibilities.
3. PS2/1 ~ awesome peripheral selection. So many unique games.
4. Dreamcast ~ favorite arcade shmups, favorite arcade stick (ASCii optical w/ rumble)
5. Genesis/MD/CD ~ solid games, pick up and play, best of 16-bit.
6. NES/FC ~ Classic, classic, classic
7. Atari 5200 ~ best 80s arcade conversions. Analog controller, key-pad, trackball
8. SNES/SFC ~ superb Nintendo franchises
9. N64 ~ Bangaioh and Sin & Punishment.
9. GC ~ GameBoy Advance Player

My opinion of the greatest systems are -

1. Sega Genesis - need I say more?

2. PS2 - Amazing library of games especially if you count PS1 games also.

3. Super Nintendo - Definitely had some classic games.

Honorable mentions - N64, Nintendo NES and Sega CD.

Ah, didn't see that. Not too familiar with the site...despite being here numerous times.

(1) Playstation = No, it has nothing to do with the PS2. The last great experimental machine, with an absolutely unrivalled selection or console RPGs and still more JRPGs than the SS and Duo have combined. Plus more of everything else. Even nearly as good a shooter system as the SS despite that there's no making up ground against the Panzer Dragoons. The best Tekkens (1 and 2), which were much better than the old Virtua Fighters. Highest overall percentage of playable games.

(1a) Saturn = I'm very partial to this system despite its meagre library, some of whose best I've still yet to play. Has the cream of the crop shooters: LS, Battle Garegga, Gun Frontier, Batsugun, Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2; its second tier tend to look like cheap Genesis titles though. RPGs are thin but has PDS; also Gunblaze S and a finished Chaos Seed. Good JRPG lineup despite few exclusives. Sakura Taisen 1 and 2. Plus other Sega games.

(2) NES = The first system where experiments bred success. Lots of sketchy, impossible games, but for the first (nor last) time they aren't glitch ridden and rushed. Lots of the top hype titles are mediocre but many are as good as it gets. Its high end games `88 to `90 are better in every respect than nearly everything from the 16 bit era. (3) Genesis = The NES's true successor. Still experimental and too hard, but early on with very high graphics and music quality; the overall quality diminished as the years rolled by. KC, PhS2, Sol Deace, Zero Wing, Hellfire, Sonic 1 and 2, Streets of Rage 1 and 2, and the enigmatic, impossible Chakan make up for a lot of lacks both on Sega's and Nintendo's sides during the 16 bit era.

(4) PCE Duo = This is the machine the Sega CD should have been. Somewhere between the Genesis and the Saturn, with CDs and carts, roleplaying, shooting, platforming, and many other things that were not FMV. I barely know this system and it already deserves to be 4th.

For me it has to be a straight tie with Snes, Megadrive and then Xbox but only because the xbox can emulate so many systems its a great all in one.

NES, Mega Drive (with Master System Converter and SEGA CD), Saturn, and... I will stop there. Also while not single systems and obviously much more vast, I would put PC and Arcade on the list.

Everything else tends to be OK, as I cannot really think of a bad mainstream console, but I cannot say I would ever miss a console like PS1 or XBox if they never existed.

1. Mega Drive - The one I grew up with, I honestly don't think it has more good games (for me) than the NES, but the 16-bit goodness makes up for it, not to mention master pieces like Ranger-X.

2. PC Engine - Being the huge shooter fan that I am discovering this system was the best. Yes Gate of Thunder is perfect, so is Spriggan. Went from the bottom to number 2 really fast.

3. SNES - For my RPG needs, for some reason SNES rpgs tended to have far more interesting battle systems than those available in the competition.

4. NES - The library contains a a ton of crap, but also a ton of really great games, to this day I'm still discovering new awesome games for it.

5. NeoGeo - What is there to be said? arcade at home.

6. XBOX - The only home console I actually owned. Amazingly every game I ever got for it was great, I had a good eye for them I suppose. Far Cry instincts being the most disappointing.

7. Gameboy Advance - Plenty of great games too, best portable ever.

8. Game Boy Color - Only portable I actually owned. I can't stand the original gameboy games, the GBC library is kinda weak but it has some great gems.

9. Commodore 64 - The computer equivalent of the NES, commits the no-music crime on some games. Not as bad as the Amiga on that front thank god.

10. Game Gear - If not for the shitty SMS ports it would be higher than the Game Boy Color.

11. Master System - Mostly for Ninja Gaiden + Asterix + Land of Illusion + Fantasy Zone II + Master of Darkness + Rambo + Power Strike II + The Sonic Games. It doesn't really have that many games I like

12/13/14/15. Amiga/X68000/MSX2/PC-98 - Not sure how to order this, they each have around 10 games that I like, all were disappointing in some way. The Amiga being the most disappointing with all the shitty ST ports but with the better library.

16. Atari 2600 - A classic, has some incredibly addictive games.

17. Saturn - Not a fan of the 32 bit gen, but the saturn has some magnificent shooters, not to mention Guardian Heroes and Panzer Dragoon.

18. PlayStation 1 - It has some games that I like, Symphony of the Night and Strider 2 for example.

19. N64 - Mostly crap, it's here for Conker and Smash Bros.

20. Atari Lynx - A few surprising gems, this "little" bugger would have made an insanely good home console, poor atari really had no idea what they were doing.

21. ZX Spectrum - Lets be honest here, this thing is in no way a game machine, the fact that it has some really damn fun games is nothing but an anomaly. Specially the ones that look good like R-Type, Extreme and Rex.

22. Neo Geo Pocket - Portable Metal Slug

23. Wonderswan Color - It was designed for shooters, shame there aren't that many good ones for it.

24. Amstrad CPC - Largely uninteresting

25. Atari ST - Most boring system of all time, having the best version of wings of death is it's only redeeming quality.
