Cross Pollinating the Genesis and Super Nintendo

The question is simply which 1 game from each system would you have liked to see cross pollinate each other.
This idea arose from the recent Metroid Likes thread where the OP asked whether there were any similar games to Metroid on the Genesis. The answer was essentially No, with Chakan being the closest out of all the distant cousins.
Keeping matters 16 bit, this got me to thinking how much both Chakan and Super Metroid would have benefited from each other's influence at the drawing stage. Both are very good games when played with patience, heavy on atmosphere and with an intention to be epic. However, Super Metroid has nothing but shapeless little 'levels' and its backtracking nature comes off as less expansive than trivial. Chakan, on the other hand, is just too hard, to the degree that it makes us question his legend: if Chakan's the greatest warrior of all time, what does that make the rat who just killed him?
Chakan would have lent Super Metroid definite level design, grit, and a sense of magnitude.
Super Metroid would have lent Chakan fluidity, moving speed, and accessibility.
Their union would have made a damned great game.

So which 1 Genesis and 1 Super Nintendo game would you have liked to see cross pollinate each other?

What system would end up with the game?

Just by having it on the genesis a lot of the atmosphere would be lost.

Umm... Maybe have one version of the game on both SNES and Genesis and provide networking between them via the cartridge? Maybe have a co-op mode over two systems. :D

Well Shinobi 3 with the extra moves from Hagane would be awesome, although the simplicity of the game is one of it's strong points... So I don't know if it would work.

I'd love for Phantasy Star IV to have a more active battle system, maybe from Star Ocean. Better overworld graphics wouldn't hurt either.

Beyond Oasis with the size and depth of Zelda.

Langrisser 2 and Der Langrisser should merge, each is superior to the other in small ways.

Can't really think of more.

Not sure about cross pollination, but at one point I had a complete game scripted for Zillion on the Genesis that would actively compete with Super Metroid while being faithful to the original. I also actually mailed Sega a request for a fighting game with characters from all of Sega's popular franchises to compete with Street Fighter II before SCE was announced. I imagined the beasts from Altered Beast, all three characters from Golden Axe, Joe Musashi from Shinobi and Shadow Dancer, Space Harrier, the Eswat guy, the Alien Storm characters and of course the characters from Streets of Rage 1. I was only slightly disappointed that Eternal Champions had all new characters instead of cross overs.

Then of course there was the dire need for a cart game on the Genesis even if it didn't have a scaled and rotated floor. I also wouldn't have minded seeing a chipped Galaxy Force II to compete with Star Fox, but oh well.

Zillion and Master of Darkness should really have had sequels on the genesis. I guess Sega was a little afraid they might be too similar to the franchises they are similar to. Even Zillion 2 has nothing to do with the first.

I'd of loved to see FF4 on genesis. Shit i'd love to see just a tech demo of someone trying to put it on genesis.

Cross pollinating is something plants do to reproduce. I'm not sure I understand this thread. I assume your implying that they could take the best of two games and make a better one out of it? In that case I think SOR2 + Super Mario World would have been awesome.

Shinobivania, no wait I mean Metroidobi. Nah neither name works but an epic one off sprawling Rondo Of Blood style Shinobi would just be jawsume. One off though the Metroidvanias have been getting a bit long in the tooth, maybe the 2D titles need another reboot?

All Shinobi III would have needed to be Metroid Vania is connecting segments between levels instead of pictures and score tallies.

Is everyone still missing the point that upgrades are a crucial aspect of metroid?

Shinobivania and Metroidobi are not "synonyms" for the same game. The first would be... exactly the way it is now, with extra weapons instead of nimpo. The other would be non-linear with upgrades needed to progress. NOT THE SAME.

Non-linear is a sort of excuse for requiring developer scripted elements in that generation. We can say that the game is non-linear because we can go back and forth as we please, but not being able to complete or access a segment without an upgrade hidden in another area is still linear. The illusion of non-linearity in games is created by a few segments that are tougher than usual in an otherwise linear game.

The bottom line is that action games like the Shinobi series are extremely difficult without the upgrades available. Dieing and retrying is secondary to learning the gameplay and holding on to the upgrades as long as possible. This is not far from requiring upgrades to access new areas.

Still, a "Shinoboid" would have adventure elements, different pacing, an overworld/map movement and backtracking. The overall experience would be very different in, pretty much, the same way that Classicvanias differ from Castleoids.
