And that's just for starters. There's a lot more, some are already posted on here.
I'm hoping I just missed it in the above lists, but They Live has to be one of the greatest 80's films. I'll list a few more down there that I think are notable, but I just had to separate They Live. I'm gonna try to put films that no one else put.
Heavy Metal
Blue Velvet
Fantasy Mission Force
Cannibal Holocaust
Caveman
By your definition of an 80's film I could also include Toto the Hero.
There you go. I guess those are the greatest for me. I kept it short but funky.

Oh, okay, Conan the Barbarian too.
Nearly everything I like's already been listed, but I don't think Red Dawn has; please correct me if I'm wrong. Very good film; love the trailer; Russians eating at McDonald's(which isn't in the movie fyi)!

City On Fire
One thing I dont get and think is stupid are why are we counting 80's movies as 78 - 91. Terminator 2 is such a 90's movie seeing on list is like you guys kids are stealing it from my childhood!
Because there are some films that were made before and after the 80s that still have the same, "atmosphere" if you will. T2 isn't one of those films for the very reason you stated.
Whoever said Heathers, needs to man it up a little. :p
I guess I need to put together the difinitive list. :)
16 Candles
The Abyss
Airplane
Alien (yeah it was 1979, but it deserves mention)

Drugstore Cowboy
The Empire Strikes Back
E.T. The Extra-terrestrial
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Ferris Bueller's day off

Not a definitive list without these:
- Neverending Story
- Labyrinth
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit
- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
- Beetle Juice
- The Untouchables
- The Abyss
And if you are including Alien and Mad Max (1979), then BttF part III and Terminator 2 also technically should be in there, as it's 1979 - 1991. Even though I think it should really only include movies from 1980 and up to and including 1989.
I don't like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Beetle Juice or Labyrinth. I didn't really care for Back to the Future III either.
Neverending Story was alright, as was the Abyss, I'll add those.
Mad Max did not appear in the United States until 1980. It debuted in Australia in April of 1979. There's a big differnce between a movie that was possibly in theaters into 1980 and one that came out 2 years after the decade was over.
^^ Rocky 2? Nightmare on Elm Street? Apocalypse Now?
:shame:
a few more...
Maniac Cop
Shocker
Risky Business
Amadeus
The Dead Zone
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Talk Radio
Puppet Master
The Toxic Avenger 1 & 2
The Great Muppet Caper
Bright Lights Big City
I have A Nightmare on Elm Street listed.
Rock 2 was released in 1979, but the storyline takes place 10 months after the first fight. Rocky III and IV are considered the Rocky movies of the 80's.
Apocalypse Now was released in 1979 as well, but unlike Alien and Mad Max, the film's influence didn't continue on into the 80's, though Platoon and Full Metal Jacket looked to cash in on its success.
