My 2D fighting game chronicles.

Rather than making a new topic everytime I conquest a 2D fighter I shall keep it all in this thread. If anyone wants to chime in their 2D fighter experiences go ahead. I am currently trying to beat King of Fighters 94-2003 since I recently found them dirt cheap at a flea market. The guy thought they were "old sega games". They were all cart only.

King of Fighters 94 is the third toughest fighting game I have ever played through. The toughest being Art of Fighting 2 and Fatal Fury 2.

KOF 94 has preset teams so you must learn the specific moves to your specific 3 characters. Now Terry is usually my go to guy but since I know Ryo's moves and his team ALL have the same moveset (with doable super specials), I choose Ryo, Robert & Mr Karate team.

Rugal is pretty lethal , it was an intense fight.

Next I overcame the second KOF , KOF 95. Now you were able to team edit so I included good ol Terry into the fun. I thought Rugal was tough, this time you must take on two tough bosses in a row Kyo's dad and Omega Rugal!! Omega Rugal at first made me wish I was fighting B. Rugal from KoF 94. I dont know how but the time I finally beat him his CPU just went retarded and let me kick its ass all with my first character. The team I used in this game was Terry, Ryo, Robert

I may take a departure from SNK if I get bored I was thinking of trying Power Instinct.

How about the last boss from the first guilty gear x 2. I still dont know how to beat her except 1 hti kill.

Have never gotten into Guilty Gear. I currently dont own a copy of any of them.

Guilty Gear games always have the best soundtracks. It's a shame I'm not really into beat em ups anymore.

Well now, King of Fighters 96. WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT FINALLY.

First of all its the first KOF game to introduce PROGRESSIVE DIFFICULTY, in other words, the first few matches are easy and the CPU get tougher and tougher, each difficulty level makes a splendid difference for the first time in possibly any SNK fighter. Although the year this was released I think all the SNK fighters had "fixed" CPUs where every fight wasnt a boss fight anymore but challening enough to be considered a good or even close scrap most of the time. Ryo and Robert were for some reason toned down in this edition, no more full Ryu-like Haduken like every other installment of Art of Fighting and even KOF 94 and 95, no now we have the DAN from capcom's shortduken. Maybe its to keep up with the SNK timeline and Ryo and Robert are getting old? Characters now have redrawn and bigger sprites, plus some awesome stage intros and the way so much english is spoken makes it feel like a live event (like the story portrays it to be). The King of Fighters tournament goes mainstream in this installment and the world tunes in like it was the world cup.

The game introduces a new playable "Boss Team" Geese from Fatal Fury, Big Boss from Art of Fighting, and Wolfgang Krauser from Fatal Fury 2.

SNK of japan must have been in charge of the translation, there are many mispelled words. One of Joe Higashi's win quotes is "Why dont you just role over and play dead"

I also forgot to mention at the end of King of Fighters 95 there was a misspelling after you beat the final boss, the very first thing you read "After Befeating Rugal"

Now this game introduced the villan Goenitz, apparently the guy who took out Rugals eye prior to the KOF games.

I read on Wiki that "people say Goenitz is easier than Omega Rugal from KOF 95"

GET THE BUCK OUTTA MY FACE. This guy is crazy cheese, you either have to stay in close and try to not give him room to breath and counter his "flash roll up behind you" trick to not let him throw you.... Or you can just try almost an hour and finally realize fair and square is based on luck only and you can cheese him with Robert Garcia's short haduken, for some reason its programmed as a short ranged move? Because Goenitz charges into it CONSTANTLY as long as you keep cheesing repeating it over and over, heck when I discovered this CPU flaw I could probably score a perect now that I know it from the start instead of discovering mid way. It will be a while before I go through all that again, maybe when a fighting friend is over just to show him Goenitz. My winning Team was Terry ,Robert, Kyo (I tried to use Joe Higashi but Kyo took his place in the final matches)

Heh, thanks for the writeup on KOF 96. Looks like I picked a good one. I made literally a random pick out of the KOF other KOF games. Wanted to try something new. So 96 is where KOF started to get real good?

Yeah Guntz for sure. Not saying that 94 and 95 are bad. They are just frustrating and WILL take a long time to beat before you can figure each CPU characters "weakness" that you must exploit. The newer ones still have a substantial difficutly but it does its best to not feel like the computers a cheater like in earlier SNK single player experencies (Art Of Fighting 2, Fatal Fury 2, Samurai Showdown 1).

KOF kinda burned me out a bit. Taking a break with the NeoGeo fighter of Savage Reign. Kind of Fatal Fury esque plane switching (that you may remain on to keep fighting on unlike Real Bout). The game has HUGE character sprites, huge play feilds, and the game muscles out some serious scaling!

Graphically this was probaly something to look at back in the mid 90s. But now on a nice LCD 42" HDMI picture the game truly immerses you. I like the guy named Eagle, thats who I am currently using. Getting into this game in just a short time of playing

I have Guilty Gear Accent Core and Im kicking myself for not getting the 'upgraded', Guilty Gear Acecnt Core + because it has a nice story mode which AC is severly lacking and also 2 characters that werent in AC.

what is Guilty Gear XX Slash? and Guitly Gear XX Reloaded?

GGX2 versions. Arc sys are whores. They released like 4 versions of 4. In fact all fighting game companies are whores. I'd love to go to Capcoms office and just punch someone in thee throat for making 3 different versions of SF4. All those extras could of easily been download content.

I enjoyed Savage Reign, I need to play more of it. It's kind of a bad fighter, but it's also fun in a weird way, probably because it's actually unique.

They've been pulling this nonsense since Street Fighter II on the SNES, guess it's been working for them as most hardcore fighting fans have no choice but to simply buy the game. Sucks how in essence they make you pay for essential the same game three or four times over.

It use to make sense though. There was no way to update your cart but now we're on systems that can have DLC. There is no excuse.

So who is getting KOF XIII when it comes out next month?

It needs to kick a lot of ass. I hope it's balanced and the netcode isn't shit.

KING OF FIGHTERS 97!!!

First of all, this game is a bit of a downgrade in my opinion than the previous version. The presentation and stage introductioins have taken a downgrade, not as flashy or cool and no announcing. The music has taken a huge step back, some stages DONT EVEN HAVE MUSIC. There are even LESS backgrounds/stages to fight in. That also pissed me off. Not sure if there are less characters but it sure seems that way (dont like counting).

The good parts? THE FIGHTING, more balanced CPU for a funner single player experience. The game also includes two options to have your characters fight with EXTRA where you charge up your super meter manually like KOF 94 and 95 and you also dodge attacks the same way as those games. SPECIAL mode is like Street Fighter where you charge up by hitting and taking hits and store your specials, also instead of the dodge move you get the roll manuver from KOF 96. So basically you can pick the control scheme of KOF 94/95 or KOF 96. Cool riight? The graphics received a slight upgrade in the sprites AND backgrounds, just check out these next two pics

The last bad guys in this game are the last of the "orochi family" or people possessed by the power of orochi. Iori is actually a mini boss, theres even an "orochi team" to replace the boss team, I beleive they are playable.

The Orochi spirit now takes over an unlikely weakling (in my opinion) of a character Chris and turns into the first SNK boss with a full screen attack that hits you anywhere (at least its blockable!)

One thing that made me mad was after playing the whole game using EXTRA mode to fight with, the only way I was ale to beat Orochi was using SPECIAL or whatever the other option is due to his attacks not giving you a chance to charge up AT ALL.

This boss was tougher than Goenitz but much easier to figure out... so maybe that make Goenitz harder? The in game story is by far the best of the first games. The team I beat it with were Terry, Ryo, Robert

I agree, KOF 96 is better, but 97 is still excellent. 98 is better than all of them, the controls are just much smoother to me than virtually any other entry of the series.

just dabbled with it, gotta turn the difficutly up a notch, got to God Rugal too fast, BUT HE IS STILL IMPOSSIBLE, it seems. Its on an easier level than its supposed to be and I cant beat him. Holy crap now I have to go through it again and fight an even tougher God Rugal!

The thing that really ticks me off in KoF Dream Match 1999 is the music keeps restarting between every round. You hear the same part of the music over and over.
