We've got this kinda stuff in to many topics all over the forum.

If you're gonna post pictures of any game being emulated or running on any type of tv in any type of mode just post it here for comparision from now on.

no more "gba emulated, psx emulated, blah filterd and blargh unfiltered etc...."

Using the wrong aspect ratio=fail. :p

Doesn't look too bad otherwise though. Is that using composite video? (any noticeable scaling or deinterlacing artifacts?)

HDMI @ 720p. Also do you really even notice its stretched.

I just remembered how much I hate the protection bubble in Sonic 2. In fact, it might the only flaw of an otherwise perfect game.

Why didn't Sega keep Sonic 1's bubble? Why?? :(

Sonic 3's multiple and useful sheilds are the best

I may snap some pics of a few systems running on a Panasonic Plasma TV. Only problem is the picture is never as good when viewed from a camera.

It's strange, playing Saturn games via S-Video on an HD Plasma actually look real good. Possibly even better than on a CRT. Even with all the fake transparencies that don't work anymore. The color and clarity is fantastic on these sets.

Yes, it's very obvious . . . unless you're in a PAL region and are used to playing games all stretched out. :p (i16:9 is only slightly more stretched than PAL)

I'm in PAL land and I didn't even notice it was stretched. I guess I can now use the full size of my TV without worrying about games not looking right, yay!

They never did work to begin with. :)

IMO 16:9 looks great on 90% of old skool games I play on my HDTV. I may turn it off on some RPGs since it makes the side to side movement looks like the character is walking way faster than up and down

the next games Im going to show you are how my real NeoGeo cart console looks on my tv. I have a A/v to HDMI upscaler that cost a little over a hundred dollars and it is damn worth it, any old system with A/V straight to an HDtv looks like crap! I beleive its running 720p or 1080i, since those are the highest settings my TV can handle, I prefer 720p

3 Count Bout looks really good on that setup! I think that HDMI upscaler helps a lot. The Punisher (NES) looks like a flash game, and I mean a fugly looking one.

These old games just look unnatural when they have crayon smoothing filters slapped on them. They are designed (due to limitations) to look pixelated and that's what they look best as.

I suppose you have the home cart NEO-GEO? What games do you have? Can you take a picture of everything in a group? That'd be jawusum of you if you could do that. :D

Dude you should get some uncommons in there. I know uncommon neogeo aes cost a lot more but most of the stuff you have are in collections and as you know can look better on emus. Pick up some of the kofs japanese aes now. You can get most of them for $150 or under now.

and that wasnt all my games, just most of my boxed stuff. I own every KOF american most my games are cart only, I live in big ol Miami, florida. you dont know how many Neo Geo carts I've bought for under 20$ in thrit stores and flea markets from clueless wholesalers and immigrant merchants since I first buying the system in 1998

Retrogaming is much easier with a CRT set. Zappers work and everything is running in its proper resolution/aspect ration.

Uh, he means light guns won't work on anything but SD CRTs. That alone is a major reason why I don't bother with HDTVs and all that nonsense.

@Clessy: Most people call lightguns "Zappers" because the NES's lightgun was called that. I guess some people have a raging hard-on for lightguns.

Wow, color me impressed with that shelf of games! There's some duplicates in there (seriously, wtf?) and even uncommon stuff like Spinmaster (going up in value these days), Robo Army and even a JP Matrimelee from the looks of things. I think I see Galaxy Fight and some other JP game in a snaplock case. Fine ass collection there, for sure! I can fully appreciate your worry of being robbed. :)

Yeah I know wtf he's talking about. I said what games on the genesis are you missing that are light gun / zapper / whatever you wanna call it? Lethal Enforcers is the only thing I can think of and talk about a suck fest those are. I cant believe that 2 people couldnt comprehend that I was asking what games are worth honestly playing that are lightgun games. Like cmon guys lets not be so dense.

LIGHTGUN SHOOTERS FOR THE GENESIS / SNES SUCK

Only light gun games worth a damn and still worth playing to this very day are the house of the dead series and time crisis.

They only suck to you. There's lots of people that enjoy playing light gun games on the NES, SMS, Genesis, and SNES. And what about the "Virtua Cop" games on the Saturn? You need a CRT to play those as well as far as I know.

Whens the last time you've played virtua cop? Go give it a run. Its one of those things where why play that when you could play Time Crisis 5 ( best light gun game ever ) Especially if you can play it at an arcade with the force kick back guns.

While I will say there aren't too many light gun games that are really worth the effort at home compared to the arcade, there's at least one:

SNATCHER

Time Crisis is definitely best played in the arcades, Time Crisis II is absolutely fantastic with the large screens, pedal, and kickback.

Time Crisis is just soooo good at arcades. The pedal and blow back just makes the game. The speakers are rather good in the new cabnits too.

That shouldn't be the case. Red/cyan 3D should work just as well on an LCD/CRT/Plasma/etc display as long as the color is properly calibrated.

The SMS's 3D glasses (or anything else dependent on a specific, synced, scan rate -like most light guns) won't work though.

The weird thing is that some systems with light gun games also specifically support ED/HD resolutions (480p, 1080i, 720p, etc), like the PS2 and Dreamcast (via VGA).
So I wonder if any of those light gun games actually have support for HD resolutions (provided you use a CRT monitor or TV without scaling/filtering).

I'm almost positive that there are light gun arcade games running at ED/HD resolutions on CRT monitors, and it's obviously possible (technically), just up to hardware+software support for the sync/scan rate.

Of course, that would only possibly work on systems with native output resolutions in that range. Anything upscaled will be incompatible regardless of the monitor type. (and some true SDTVs also won't work due to additional filtering/processing that causes a slight amount of lag -though you can often disable those features in the service menu)

Yep, PAL users got shafted with wrong looking games in most cases, especially for SNES/SMS games (or low-res MD games, or anything else that's a similar resolution -ie slightly wider pixels than square in NTSC, but close enough that many devs didn't care to compensate . . . but REALLY wrong looking in PAL).
That's one nice thing about the MD's normal (320x224/240 H40) resolution, the pixels are too tall in NTSC and too wide in PAL (if artists assumed square pixels), but not horribly off in either . . . albeit games that DID optimize for NTSC will look much more stretched in PAL.

Hence why loops in Sonic and Sonic's shape when rolling are wide ovals in PAL and tall ovals in NTSC (unless you have a custom calibrated monitor . . . or slightly wrongly calibrated TV that shows square pixels -which I happen to have ;)).

For that matter, Zombies At My Neighbors, while designed for NTSC first, will look correct in PAL for the MD version (graphics will be almost exactly the shape of the NTSC version on the SNES -since MD runs at the higher res and squished the pixels horizontally). Likewise, PAL Earthworm Jim on the MD will look like NTSC EWJ on the SNES (in terms of the pixel aspect ratio).

Relatively few games were optimized for Non-square pixels, and of those, almost all were for NTSC.

Of course, the pacing is also wrong for many, many PAL releases (games were meant for 60 Hz), though a handful of releases were actually meant only for 50 Hz and never corrected for 60 Hz. (there's at least one example of FMV that plays wrong because of that -NovaStorm)

And here is a regular Gameboy game on the same tv. I have to manually color the 8 palletes and Im bad with colors and kinda color blind so sorry if i made a black n white game look worse. The game is Castlevania Adventure, everybody gives it a low score due to its hardcore difficulty. I like it better than Castlevania 3, that one did too much with the extra characters, made it too complex for me.

Missile Defense 3D and Rescue Mission on the Master System are fun. Body Count and T2: The Arcade Game on Genesis are good as well. Ghost Squad on the Wii is great, and Operation Horned Owl and Elemental Gearbolt on the PS1 are fun.

Time Crisis was fun until it became the same game with every outing. The last one on PS3 was horrible, and without the peddle, half of what makes the series fun is gone.

loool, Castlevania Adventure is a fucking classic. I love it. It was my first brick Game Boy game, so I'm fucking sick at it now.

That's because DanShad can't stand video games in their purest form. He always adds a filter whenever possible. Thankfully he can't use a filter on his real NEO-GEO.

Also wanted to throw this out there to all the CRT purist.

Crt absolutely suck for what im doing there. Each CRT has its own little unique resolutions regardless of what they're rated at. They also have curvature even in flat tubes.
If you notice closely near the bottom half of each picture you will see the tube has ^ style curve to the picture. You will also notice it at the top but its very minor there. Also notice how the picture doesnt perfectly fit on the screen. Again its because tubes resolutions are all unique and normally when watching a movie or something like that you're loosing tiny bits of the picture you normally wouldnt notice. Most game systems or movie players place a safezone around a imagine. A computer doesnt do this at all.

LCD is by far the best when using for emulation as its just a giant computer monitor with speakers

Man I'm having SOOOO much fun playing Castlevania Circle of the Moon. This game was MEANT to be played on a big tv. So much detail in the backgrounds, cool monsters, slick responsive controls. RPG elements.

Its like Ys3 had sex with Castlevania and gave the kid steroids . I will beat the 3 gba ones then move on to the translated uncensored PSX version that I was able to get from Romhacking dot net

the original action castlevania's are tough as nails man, no matter what system
