My favorite is still ASCII Rogue. Can't beat the classic! I still have nightmares about the letter L. Damn leprechauns...

I think the best thing to come out of the Bards Tale series was the spin-off Dragon Wars.
Well that and the Bards Tale Construction Set. It was more difficult to use than FRUA, but you could make your own BT games with it.
