Half of the games you mentioned aren't platformers. Some, such as Ecco and Forgotten Worlds, aren't even close to being platformers. Which begs the question: have you played any of them?
Furthermore, mentioning Barts vs the Space Mutants in a list of supposedly good platform games made you lose every ounce of credibility.

Actually, Another World is a prequel to Heart of the Alien.
Ecco's a platformer in the same vein as Lode Runner and Troddlers, just with greatly amplified open space. It contains not only jumping out of water but also underwater, ie his dash, which is used to bypass jets of air, those jets taking the stead of pitfalls, like a platformer in negative. No he doesn't run on platforms, he swims over them. Mario in 3 and SMW can use a tail or cape to fly; when he's flying that doesn't make dolphin puzzle games. Similarly in Mario 1 the swimming lvs have forced scrolling and virtually no platforms, but that doesn't make them shmups.Quote:

IMO genre classification is a thing that will never fit perfectly for games, music, whatever... It's useful to keep the things organized, but you should not adopt it as a religion.
Sega-16, Gamefaqs, EGM, GamePro, etc sometimes are totally different about the genre of a game.
Konami was not worried about how RKA would be classified due to its jetpack.
Genesis Sonic games played with Tails or Knuckles are still platformers even if they can "fly" for some time, avoiding the need to jump/walk in all platforms...
Game designers are not concerned about genre classification, for sure.
I think that the Action/Adventure label suits the Ecco series the most.
I've always considered Ecco to be a bizarre Action/Adventure/Platforming hybrid (even though, yes, there aren't any actual "platforms" that you jump on). Like an underwater, linear and level-based Legend of Zelda without the inventory management. I dunno, it's kind of a hard game to define. I wouldn't flat out call it a platformer but I can definitely see where StarMist is coming from.
It's also one of my favorite games, along with the sequel. I've been busy so I haven't had time to look at the rest of your response and I do apologize for that. I'll try to take a closer look at it later tonight if I have the time.
