How many Genesis controllers do you have?

I was reorganizing my Genesis stuff, and realized I had 7 controllers. That was a surprise to me, as I haven't bought one in ages and really have no need for that many. They accumulate like lint I suppose. I have three Sega 6-button, one Sega 3-button, and three knock offs (all of which are decent, or I would have tossed them).

Since there are a lot of collectors on this board, I'm sure there are people with Genesis controllers stacked up like cord wood. Perhaps you have an entire closet full of them? :) How many Genny controllers do you have? Let's see who can win the useless title of "He Who Has the Most Genesis Controllers (TM)".

Funny timing: I just cleaned both my model 1 and 2, outside and in (2s are dust magnets), then , that completed, moved on to my old Genny box...where I found a loot of controllers. Did I sleep-rob somebody? 14 in total! Repaired two, with two in need of more extensive mending to come, and one to be turned into a Saturn controller since I have the chipboard left over from exchanging my piece of crap ''Saturn'' USB controller for a real Saturn controller's body. Various makes, nothing uncommon or valuable, no joysticks.

I have a half dozen. All three buttons, one has red on the inside of the letters A, B, and C. I don't know why. Maybe an early release? Anyways it's my favorite other than my Van Halen controller.

I have about 10 or 11 3-button Genesis controllers I believe. I also have a pair of official wireless 6-button pads.

3x 6-button Saturns
1x 3-button Genny

I have 6x 3 button controllers.
2 for my MegaDrive , 2 for my MasterSystem (no original gamepads? BLASPHEMY!) and 2 spare :)

Holding SMS controllers is a bitch anyways. Genny controllers are way more comfortable (especially than the side corded ones!).

I have 4 (only 1 6 button, 2 red letter 3 buttons, and 1 black 3 button with an oddly short cord -but it's not a JP MD pad).

We need to get arnoldthebartender in here . . . he's got a few dozen Genesis controllers. ;)

This is the reason why I don't generally use the SMS pads for my SMS :B
The D-pad isn't the best either.

How did the Saturn pad to USB pad swap go for ya? I asume you heeded my orginal advice about swapping them, theres a lot of knock-off saturn usb pads doing the rounds, but there worth buying If you can find a real deal Saturn doner. I still have'nt repurchased a 2nd USB pad after the first broke and I chucked it. I've got a gunmetal grey model Saturn pad with a finnicky D-Pad thats waiting to be reused for a USB mame pad.

Yes, red impress for the original release. + that Van Halen controller may be the handsomest MD pad I've seen...I'm not sure I'd even touch it.

Actually I must have missed that. Good advice nonetheless, as it took very short work for my USB dpad to break: I'd estimate under 15 hours, as I hadn't been using the emu much of late and when I did there was often call to employ the PS model controller. Overall it went satisfactorily; the L button likely won't work (v below) yet I never map to it.

For others interested in performing this exchange: I switched a standard Jp grey controller for a GTron USB. The chipboards are nearly enough the same size to cause no problems. The face buttons/shells aren't interchangeable, so you can't make any aesthetic switches like adding your SS black buttons and dpad to your mint white USB shell or vice versa. The buttons just wouldn't sit well; secondarily it'd require altering the dents, which are quite differently placed, but that'd be easy if you didn't mind your buttons floating or rotating. Switching the SS dpad onto the USB would require disassembling the round from the base; whether that can be done safely, ie w/o breaking the tenon due to the epoxy that presumably binds them, is up to your discovery. However, the shoulder buttons can and generally should be switched: the R went in fine, but the L proved inexplicably fatter, to the point I had to clip back the shell's aperture in order for it to fit--after which it sank in the slot. So check your USB shoulder buttons against each other and your SS's first if you plan to switch them. If you don't wish to switch them you must remove their soles (gel/plastic) and attach those to the SS's shoulders which won't reach the internals otherwise, because the USB's shoulder clickers are sunk lower than the SS's--they're also much stiffer which is why the shoulder buttons feel stiffer and work less, not the buttons themselves. >>> Given foresight, an irregular USB shoulder button could probably be perfected through boiling to soften it, as their plastic is so thin.
Also, the SS rubbers are of superior durability though it'd take some rough treatment if not outright negligence for that to matter; eg there should be no harm in keeping your USB Start button. Screws are interchangeable.

By the way my Saturn-Genny pad switch will be for the big 3-button style dpad Genny controller (with 6 buttons); if you want I can post or PM how it's gone, but there's a tugged wire to be mended first.

29 working controllers here, different models (pads, arcade stick, chimera 3...) and brands (Sega, Hori, Quickshot, Ascii, High Frequency, Competition Pro, Naki), 3-button and 6-button.

I got about 30 too i think, but i refuse to count because i finally got everything boxed.

for me that box with 12 SG propads really does the trick, fav pad ever! reason i bought a box full of them from ebay.

Lol, that's pretty much me as well. I've got a 2'x4' box filled with controller that I try not to think about, there are also earwigs in there I think...
Some of the standouts would probably the Genesis Arcade pad, original SMS controller, the SMS control stick, and the SMS light phaser and a couple regular Justifiers. I saw someone mention a pink Justifier, I'm jelly! I've been looking for one of those off and on for quite awhile.

I could confirm that the model one came with red on th inside of A/B/C buttons, as I got a boxed model one. The plastic and d-pad feels nicer using the controller with the red inlay(?). I also have model two which came with a three button with just the white font above the buttons, with no other colour appearing.

Anyways, I have 7 controllers. 3 Three button controllers, 1 six button controller, 1 three button arcade stick, and two six button arcade sticks.

My goal is to have every Genesis controller made, 1st and 3rd party. I have a large collection and will post pictures later since I am at work right now.

There is one good thing about the SMS controllers: excellent button actuation. The buttons themselves aren't as nice as the Genesis A/B/C buttons (larger and concave) but they're nice as far as non-concave buttons go (large and not too convex -sort of like the N64 A/B buttons), but that's not the good part.
The outstanding feature is the silky smooth button pressing action on the SMS pads, it's the best I've ever experienced on any controller. (it would have been awesome if Sega could have used that with the genesis pads)

The one thing that kills me on SMS pads it trying to use them with those tiny joysticks screwed into the D-pad. I feel like I'm slowly working a hole into my thumb after using them for a long period of time.

I have 6 controllers (I think):

- 1 Sega Genesis 3 button controller
- 2 Brazilian Mega Drive 3 button controllers
- 2 Sega Genesis 6 button controllers
- 1 SG Pro Pad 6

Anyways, the one I like the most is the japanese 3 button controller, but I still have to get another one again.

Eur/Jap Sega Mouse looks nice IMO, US one sucks. I have the Japanese (blue) version.

Competition Pro is great (SG-18 and SG-6 FTW!). Naki/Nakitek is utter crap, stay away.

The arcade stick is the Japanese Sega Arcade Power Stick 6B. The best one IMO (it's microswitched and smoother than the EUR/US versions) and rare these days. I know the Hori one you're talking about and I'm considering to get one of those... Hori pads are great.

Chimera 3 is a digital stick, great for isometric and top-down view games:

Yeah, the Japanese Sega 3-Button is a great pad.

Two 3-button, one 6-button, and one 6-button with turbo, all first-party. I'd like to get another 6-button sans turbo, as it's got the best D-pad I've ever used. A six-button arcade stick with individual turbo selectors would also be nice.

I also have a blue Justifier, as well as two SMS pads and the SMS Light Phaser gun.

Damn that is one crazy looking pad! Might have to track that one down. The Hori is actually really nice as far as 16 bit arcade sticks go. Except the stick feels a little rubbery and stiff at first and takes a little bit of breaking in and getting used to since its not micro switched. Its a bit tough to go diagonal with it at first but I eventually got used to it. Basically its excellent for some games (I'm a lot better at eternal champions with the stick than with a joy pad surprisingly) but not for others. The base to it has excellent weight and can sit on a lap or on a table really well while playing. The buttons are great for a 16 bit arcade stick but obviously can't hold a candle to more modern sticks that use sanwa or semitsu buttons.

Yeah, the Chimera is really amazing for some games like Sonic 3D, MERCS, Skeleton Krew, Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, Rambo III, True Lies, Chaos Engine and even for Vapor Trail...
Sometimes it just disappear from eBay but stay tuned, 'cause a couple of weeks ago I snagged one for GBP2.10. Now I have two of those and I can play Skeleton Krew with my friends in its full glory.

Also, the Sega Mouse can click when it's flipped upside-down to be used with Tengen's Marble Madness as a trackball. I don't think that your awful spaceship-like US Mega Mouse is able to do that.

I have three six-button turbo controllers and one arcade fighting stick. That suits me just fine, but maybe I should pick up a few more of those Sega brand controllers. It sounds like my retro store won't be able to get any more of them.

What a ridiculous idea... flip a mouse over and pretend it's a trackball. How about leaving it right-side up and using it like a mouse, which is much easier and gives better control? I've never found a trackball that worked as well for control in a game as a mouse.

and a few others in various states of (dis)repair.

How many controllers? I don't know. I have Sega controllers like the beach has grains of sand.

Not enough... Genesis controllers are only middle-of-road when it comes to build quality, and most of mine are in need of repair. The local used game place is always out of Genesis controllers too.

Need to clean off the contacts / re-graphite the rubber domes one of these days. Only my six button works 100% correctly!
