It's been a while since I have watched this and I wanted to share.
Behold one of the earlier beta of Genesis Street Fighter 2! Along with black bars on top, errors in the names (like Branka), missing object (Vega's claw) and so much more!
I find it very fascinating, unfortunately I don't think prototypes of it have ever surfaced..

I'd love to get my hands on a proto of this build.
EDIT: OTOH, this video verifies that the beta ROM floating around now is genuine, and not a random hack, as the intro music, sound samples, and fonts are essentially the same.

Man, I am so glad Sega got Capcom to redo the game... this looks like it would have been quite disappointing for me after all the wait.
So I guess The beta ROM floating around is of a more advanced state of that port... but probaby with a title screen hack. At least that one got rid of the black bar behind the energy bars.
The musics are indeed the same as the ones in the leaked "SF II' Turbo", but the voice samples, interestingly enough, are as "scratchy" as the ones found in the released "Street Fighter II' Special Champion Edition". The voice samples in the "SF II' Turbo" beta, which should be an intermediate version between these two, are noticeably cleaner than both of these versions' samples.
It's interesting because I thought the "scratchy" samples in Street Fighter II' Special Champion Edition were because of its "Capcom custom" sound driver, unlike what happens with "SF II' Turbo" which uses "pre-SMPS 68k" driver. But I guess this earlier "Street Fighter II' Champion Edition" should be using that too.
What about the "swoosh" sound of the moves? It's really bad!
I must say I'm quite happy with the final result of the audio engine after all, the beta has too many missing sounds on simultaneous attacks and this alpha sounds even worse..
I didn't think there was any question to whether the current SFII Turbo Beta was real or not . . . it hardly seems like a hack of any sort. (other old videos showing the above protos have been posted before too)Quote:

The ROM floating around seems to pre-date the demo/proto shown in videos (it's missing any reference to the Capcom name and has an odd title screen in general, and it's much smaller than SCE -2 MB/16Mbit vs 3 MB/24Mbit -and is missing some of the SFX seen in the video), however it also seems far more polished and near-ready for release. (no odd SFX, no oddly clipped/blank screen, no misspelled names, etc -just the title screen and pause feature needed to be addressed)
The music does seem to be the same in both prototypes though, so there's definitely some relation. (I wonder if Sega started development of their own licensed port, but then Capcom decided they were interested in publishing for the MD themselves and negotiated Sega to give them the prototype as a starting point -the final SCE release has considerable differences from that beta, totally different sound engine, different music style in general, missing frantic music tracks -just ups the tempo, different color/shading style -much more dithering, more BG animation, and less sprite animation in some cases oddly enough)
If that 2MB game was done by Sega, I wonder how early that was done, it would be interesting if it was actually ready in 1992 but delayed for whatever reasons.
I don't think any version has been done by sega, look at the title screen of the earlier proto, only capcom copyrights, no sega at all there while on sega reprogrammed games it's clearly stated.
Also, the leaked beta looks like a pirate hack of the beta with all references removed in the title. Dunno why it has the (corrupted) sega logo at startup,though.
It is unlikely Sega did the proto.
All I know from mags back in the day is that Sega made a deal with Capcom to do a "better" version of Street Fighter II than the on SNES. There are no details about the amount paid, but you can be sure some money was flowing.
Capcom began work on SF II: CE, and the result (shown at the same event as SF II Turbo on SNES) was not well-received. It was argueable if it was better than even the original SF II on SNES given the technical flaws, and the announcement of Turbo made the thing worthless. Reminding Capcom of their contractual obligation for an improved version, Capcom was forced to kill the original version and instead began work on SCE nearly from scratch.
Had Sega been the developers they would not have been disappointed in the original CE, qand Capcom would not have redone it.
I often wonder how a Sega-reprogrammed version would have turned out. I wonder if it would have been better than what we finally got.
I've always contended that, had the same team that programmed Final Fight programmed SF II: SCE, it would have been nothing short of amazing. If they did it on CD it would have been the definitive home version at the time.Quote:

Of course, it's also unclear whether the proto in the video came before or after the leaked beta ROM.
It's also odd that a game being developed around 1992 was using the old pre-SMPS Sega driver . . . unless Sega limited what sound engines could be licensed to 3rd parties. (SMPS 68k and Z80 were already used in several games released in 1991 . . . the 68k version -like the pre-SMPS example- was the more consistent/foolproof one by far though -the Z80 one was often more distorted/inconsistent for PCM/DPCM, though at least it didn't have to halt FM/PSG like pre-SMPS Z80)
While it didn't offer multi-channel mixing, SMPS did support 4-bit DPCM compressed samples. (so double the sample rate could have been used, or more/longer samples at more moderate rates -albeit then you've got more artifacting than uncompressed PCM . . . and for the rates we're talking, uncompressed 4-bit PCM could have been a better option anyway)

IMO the leaked "Turbo" beta ROM is generally superior to the SNES WW in overall content and gameplay. Actually, I'd take it over SNES Turbo even. Fewer voices/SFX, but better sounding/more accurate speech/SFX in general (vs the garbled/muffled/hacked-up SNES samples) though obviously weaker than the PCE game in that area.Quote:

They also managed to do that all within 2 MB of ROM, identical to WW on the SNES (and 512k smaller than CE on PCE or Turbo on SNES -a full 1 MB smaller than SCE on the MD). They made a much better choice of trade-offs and optimizations than WW on the SNES IMO, or for the larger games as well (relative to ROM usage).
SCE certainly doesn't seem like it's a full 1MB larger than that beta ROM.
There's also no reason they should have had to completely rework the game either . . . just start with the existing prototype and use an added MB of ROM space to fill out added speech/SFX, BG animation, etc, etc. (preferably it should have had higher quality/sample rate samples as well . . . not to mention a decent sound driver to play them -supporting 2 channels was nice, but the shitty playback system really made it pointless . . . unless they were so incompetent that they couldn't have done any better with a single-channel driver -Data East and Factor 5 both did far better single-channel sample drivers -and sound engines in general- earlier than that, and doing so in far smaller/more limited games -Vapor Trail, Atomic Runner, Mega Turrican . . . games the size of the space difference in beta and SCE)
Also, with PC Engine CE and SNES Turbo both targeting 2.5 MB (20 Mbit), I wonder why the MD beta was only 2 MB (16 Mbit) in general . . . unless (again) it predated both of those versions significantly.
There was a magazine that I read (although I cannot remember the name of it) and someone stated that Street Fighter II': Champion Edition would be released on the Mega CD, although that never came to be. The writers were also discussing what progress was being made on the Sega Mega Drive version beta (costumes, features, modes, etc.) I too have asked myself and wondered what Sega's version of Street Fighter II': Champion Edition on the Mega Drive would have been like, and the Mega CD version even more so. Thank you Tor Landeel for providing a link to allow users and guests to see the Mega Drive beta version footage; I'm certain that they appreciate you creating this thread and informing us about this prototype (as I do.) I do wonder if Sega ever negotiated a license for the MCD SFII. It probably wouldn't have had a huge impact on MCD sales/interest (or pulled that much hype from SNES SFII), but it certainly wouldn't have hurt. (plus, it could have been offered as a pack-in for special bundles)
At the very least it probably would have sold significantly better than Final Fight CD. (and, from a business standpoint, if they could choose one or the other, SFII CD would make far more sense -though from a retro gamer/fan standpoint, Final Fight CD is certainly more interesting to have given it's the only really good console port of that game in general -interesting that Sega didn't push SoR more on the CD, and the compilation example that was there is far less impressive than Final Fight CD)

Just quoting what the magazine said. It was a very relieable mag, although of course Sega and Capcom would not talk openly about such details.
The problem was also not so much that the 16Mbit version was not better than the WW on SNES, but that Capcom announced Turbo before the MD version was even released, rendering it outdated before release. Compared to the earlier beta in this video, the beta we know is already more acceptable. That black bar would have been ridiculous.
As for the sound... well, this is a Sega-site, and naturally peole here like the music. But I think that for the general public the sound of the SNES versions always sounded better. Neither the beta nor the final game could compete in that area. I think Sega was aware of that and they wanted more advantages in the graphics- and gameplay department.
This is an interesting observation and dovetails with a question I've mulled since I last played SFIICE a month ago. Was the SNES version really, practically the better? Did its superior presentation, meaning its appeal to casual/moderate gamers, outweigh its inferior gameplay that would only be noticed or cared about by arcade gamers? The idea Sega's hand was forced in the matter by their hardware asks the contrapositive of Nintendo: did they knowingly sacrifice gameplay for graphics and audio? I believe the SNES could've got the engine running faster if gameplay had been the priority.Quote:

I think that nuances in gameplay are usually not noteable for the broad public. You have to really spend time and compare to get that stuff. But with graphics and sound, you get an immediate reaction. A minute is enough to catch attention this way.
To get people to buy a game, you need to impress them without them having to play to understand the diference. Graphics and sound do the trick immediately, and I believe Nintendo knew. They expected that the larger color palette, mode 7 and instrumental sound would impress and overweigh other shortcomings. In the end they were right.

Regarding ROM edits...
As mentioned in the thread above, the ROM header has been pasted over with the information from the Ninja Gaiden beta, which has been altered from it's original state also. Until an unaltered ROM is found we may never know a lot of specific information.
Garbling the blue SEGA logo is a common practice for pirates, and was what I thought was initially going on. However, they usually completely block the logo out or you may only see a section or two. I remember seeing this also and after it was discussed here I went back to recheck it. If you notice it's not really garbled, just a section of blue graphical data is on the top right hand corner... then something dawned on me.
It uses a wide/thick Sega logo like a lot of the 3rd party titles used. I can't really describe it properly and I'm too lazy to give an example of what I'm talking about, but it's similar to the one used by Acclaim/Arena off the top of my head. The logo isn't garbled, it just has a blue piece of graphical garbage on the upper right. If you boot the game in Japanese mode, it's not garbled, but in US it is. That's because in the US/PAL mode it displays a TM after the Sega logo, in the Japanese version it doesn't. This is just like the real finished Japanese version behaves (it doesn't have a country lockout like the US & PAL versions do). The finished version also uses the newer, skinny Sega logo.
I initially thought the STII' Turbo title screen was an edit, but now I don't think so. I don't think any pirate outfit is going to go out of their way to modify an animated background to that extent yet leave the blue Sega logo intact on startup. Also, there aren't any Sega/Capcom copyright notices on the title screen of the finished product after you press start and I see no reason why there would be any on this either.
On the game....
Although the name has Turbo in the title, are there any actual features from Turbo other than a few alternate costume colors?
Even though the endings are not intact, all the ending text is in ASCII and can be viewed with a hex editor.
I never, ever saw this particular version previewed or even mentioned in any magazines at the time. It was as if it went straight from the black-barred beta to SFII:SCE. Did anyone notice otherwise.
And another thing...
I recently picked up an interesting pirate a couple days ago. It's called Street Fighter III: 18 Person. It's a shoddily done hack by Glorysun of this Turbo beta featuring the 4 characters from Super Street Fighter II and also Takuma and "Chzhen" (whoever that is). It has a new title screen and character select screen, but all the new characters are just unique palette-swaps of existing characters.
Wow, I totally remember that commercial in the beginning.
Capcom's SNES music is usually rather lacking, though their instrumentation works a lot better in some games than others. SFII WW and Turbo are pretty lacking in music IMO, and the SFX/speech is really messed up. (though it's not THAT obvious unless you use the arcade as a reference -the PCE/SNES/MD comparison makes it really obvious)Quote:

SCE has really distorted speech/sfx/drum sample playback (and all pretty low quality samples on top of that -but SNES is really no better there), but at least they're not hacked up like the SNES ones. (SSFII didn't do that for either game, but both are really muffled and the MD's are still quite distorted)
Umm, this doesn't seem right at all . . . a game that looks and sound great, but plays like crap (real crap, not average/mediocre) or is exceedingly frustrating/annoying in other regards will tend to piss people off regardless. (average/mediocre/decent games OTOH can certainly have graphics/sound/marketing put it over the top -I personally find good sound/music can play a huge role in how much I like a game, perhaps more so than graphics . . . good sound/visuals can make an average game good and a good game truly great -of course, there's the issue of timing/marketing/etc for it to become a huge market success)Quote:

As to most people not spending much time with any 1 game, I'd have to greatly disagree there too. Aside from families/individuals with tons of disposable income, or maybe a few cases of budget games (more so for some old computer games due to cheap tapes/floppies -and piracy ;)), most people only got a handful of games each year, if that. Console games in particular were/are expensive (especially new), so unless you're just renting a game, you're probably going to be stuck with what you've bought for quite a while before something new. (and any older games you already have)
The only games people tend not to play much are ones they don't like (or don't own), and people tend to be frustrated by buying a new game only to find it's no fun. (granted there's a few other cases, like a really cheap game that's not a big deal to lose out on, or games they might actually like but never got far enough into -or games they got bundled with the system -new or used- that they ignored for whatever reason, though none of those fit the context of major/mass-market new released games)

From what I know, in Europe until about the mid 90s, "consoles" were seen more as toys for kids with computers being the "serious" game machines. (even more so in the 8-bit era)
In the US, this wasn't really the case at all: computer gaming was there, but it was almost always niche compared to consoles (the C64 in the mid 80s being the main exception) at least prior to PC games in the mid 90s. The majority of game playing (be it kids or adults) were on consoles, or mainly Atari in the 70s to mid 80s and Nintendo in the late 80s to about '91 (when Sega really started to split the market).
Japan is another story as well. (consoles were even more dominant there over computers than in the US, though JP computer gaming was decidedly different than US computer gaming)
It's true that the gaming market started out far smaller and more limited in scope back in the 70s, but each generation expanded that to broader and broader audiences. (younger and older age groups, more women/girls, etc)
Actually, the late 80s and early to mid 90s were probably one of the few periods where the market demographic was fairly static. (as was the overall market size -ie overall NES+SMS+7800 userbase/sales wasn't much different from Genesis+SNES+PCE sales/userbase, though the same could be said for the current -7th- generation compared to the 6th gen: ie PS3+Wii+360 vs DC+GC+Xbox+PS2 -in both cases of the 3rd/4th and 6th/7th gen, there hasn't been much change in major genres being pushed either with the reign of 2D sidescrollers vs 3D FPSs having some notable parallels -I wonder if the current popular genres will be surpassed like the 3rd/4th gen games were)

Were it released for the CD, it would have been identical to the arcade game, but with a more limited color pallet. Larger and more detailed characters, more frames of animation, more layers in the backgrounds, more background animations, accurate sound, etc. As everyone here knows, the Sega CD has processors and working memory available to it that is very similar the Capcom CPS1 hardware. Street Fighter 2 makes no use of any scaling or rotation abilities which would have been challenging to duplicate. Unfortunately, you didn't see games like that being developed because schizophrenic Sega was already planning to phase out the Sega CD and was developing multiple consoles to replace the Mega Drive. If you have played Street Fighter 2 from the Playstation or Playstation 2 versions, you can see it is quite a bit better than the SNES and Mega Driver versions despite the claims of whatever video game magazines of the early 90's that believed these were direct ports.Quote:

If the game were at all optimized for the Genesis VDP (which is what the Sega CD is limited to) they either would have used sprites for the health bars and whatnot, or the Window layer.

It is like Fatal Fury Special CD, but with smaller and less detailed characters and more pixalated backgrounds. It also does not feature noticeably superior parallax to the Sega CD version.
In a fighting game parallax is not the make-or-break issue. It is the atmosphere created by the graphics and the control.
However, I'd have to say that the control on Fatal Fury 2 is a bit more polished than Fatal Fury CD is.
The point is that they at least tried to take advantage of the hardware instead of just doing a lame quick copypaste. Remember you need to modify the assets to make them look good on weaker hardware.
Also looking at the video, holy shit what happened to the SNES version o_O Now that's just... bad.
