In my opinion, while there are certainly fantastic RPGs on the Genesis, the SNES did it generally did it bigger and better. When people wax-nostalgic over 16-bit RPGs they're more often than not going to spend most of their time discussing the classics on the SNES.
For me the Genesis has always been the action games console which is more where my tastes center and why it's one of my favorite consoles.
I still can't vote because of the phrasing "better RPGs" in the poll. If it was "Which system has more top rated RPGs" I'd vote SNES in a heartbeat. Part of the problem for me is that I absolutely HATE Final Fantasy III/VI and Chrono Trigger. Their art style and music annoys me, their diatribe, erm, I mean dialog makes me cringe, their pacing or lack thereof in favor of "mood" scenes makes me snore. Final Fantasy II/IV has always been the only SNES RPG that could maintain my interest, and I prefer Phantasy Star III and Sword of Vermillion over that. With the Genesis, I simply cannot get around the Shining Force games and Shining in the Darkness being pure 16-bit RPG bliss and I have put more time into them than I will ever put into SNES RPGs. Then there's Star Flight and Star Control, crap I just can't see cheesy Shogo dialog beating these two games.Quote:

StarFlight is such an amazing game, one of the best RPG’s of all time. Too bad it never gets the attention and respect it deserves outside of the PC circles. If StarFlight had impressive graphics and a more user friendly interface it would appear on every Mega Drive/Genesis top list. It literally is the Mass Effect of the 16bit era.

Starflight is a sandbox game with a heavy emphasis on exploration. It has elements from both Strategy and RPG games as, along your progress, you upgrade your ship and the crew. It’s somewhat difficult to define it, I’d call it a WRPG, but, by today’s standards, I think that the Action/Adventure label would suit it the most.
I think by today's standards it would qualify as a space sim/strategy game.
Star Flight doesn't seem much off from other Western RPGs to me. If it is a strategy game then so is Shadowrun.
Nevermind, I was thinking Star Control. I always get the two mixed up.
I'm not an RPG nut. I'm currently playing through PSIV, which is my first one. I'm leaning towards the Genesis on this one. As Jfactor mentioned, nearly all the MD RPGs were brought over while less than half of the SFC ones were (so I've heard). I really have no desire to play any of the Squeenix games because they are all very expensive today and they're just too fanboy-bullshitty. Everyone always goes on about how FF II and III, CT, etc are perfection and its really annoying. I feel like they have enough fans. I'd rather stick to my favorite console and see what it has to offer. It feels like I'm in an exclusive club, like I know something not a lot of others know.

It's more an Adventure game than an RPG. And I'd say it's a pretty good one. I like it more than the genesis Shadowrun, which can't hold my attention for more than 2 seconds.Quote:

I voted for the SNES. Phantasy Star II and IV and the Shining Force games are great, but the SNES has Chrono Trigger, the Breath of Fire games, EarthBound and Super Mario RPG, all of which are some of my favorite games on the system.
