Well?
I voted Genesis. Both consoles have many platformers, but the ones on the Genesis are much more fun, and memorable.
Genesis hands down for the simple fact that Sonic was so hot at the time I didnt matter wtf Snes had sonic along beat everything. In truth however the snes has just as many good platformers as the genesis. There is no 1 category in which the Snes looses to the genesis honestly except the speed of which some of their ports play.
I have to go with Genesis as well. Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III, Castle of Illusion, Strider, Valis, Valis III, Batman (Sunsoft), Ren & Stimpy, ToeJam & Earl 2, Flashback, and Castlevania Bloodlines pretty well seal the deal for me. On the SNES I like Actraiser, Castlevania IV, and that's about it.
Mascots should all be considered mass market fodder rather than real games.
Hehe, you´re more of an SNES fan than a Genny fan it seems. :)
My vote goes to the Genesis. Granted, the SNES has a fair share of great platformers as well, but the Genesis games are the ones I think of first when I think of good jump´n runs.
The Sonic games, Tiny Toons, Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Kid Chameleon, Monster World IV, Aladdin... and the games that came out on both systems.
I'm really not. Mario might be top tier for Nintendo, but Sonic was just a conglomeration of gameplay and style that Sega was already known for thanks to its existing catalog. Actually, I saw Sonic as a caricatured Strider with rather forced "Mario style" play mechanics. It was somewhat out of character for Sega to try that hard to answer somebody else's game. Sonic was a great invention, and the games are great, but I consider them as separate from the games I listed and I rarely consider Mario games at all. Mario 2 is my favorite of them all.
I honestly haven't played any SNES platformers outside of Super Mario World (and Metroid, if that counts as a platformer). I mean, who owns an SNES?:)
I am going to say that I bought the Genesis mostly for the platformers. I've owned a SNES since 1995 and there might only be a handful of platformers I really like (and I've always been a big platformer fan). I'd say Skyblazer, Super Mario World, Super Metroid and Castlevania 4 are standouts for me. I don't like any of the Disney ones on the SNES. I'm sure there are more good ones I haven't played, but from my experience, ALL SNES platformers have a certain overly relaxed pace--even in the best ones--that's not exactly adrenaline-rushing. There are some that try to capture a Genesis feel, like Hagane, but why play a poor man's Shinobi when you can play the real thing elsewhere?
Come to think of it, I think I even enjoyed more platformers on the TG-16 than the SNES...and the TG-16/PC Engine wasn't exactly swimming with platformers.
The SNES was my JRPG console and I still view it as such today.
Genesis wins just with the Sonic series alone. Only top tier SNES platformers imo are DKC 1 & 2, SMW and Super Castlevania 4.
To everyone who ignored snes platformers.
DEMONS CREST seriously play it. Mind blowing.
I'm not trolling, I'm just expressing my opinion. In regard to Mario and Sonic games, I just consider them mainstream marketing platforms first and games second. Before the modern syndicated game franchises, these types of games were the exceptions in a sea of experimental and unique games.
-edit-
Demon's Crest is a great game, not sure I'd call it a platformer though.
Super mario bros 3 in Super Mario All-Stars didn't grab anyone's attention?
It became a "real" Mario game the moment they retooled the graphics. I think when it comes to SMB2, America got the better game. The Japanese SMB2 feels like an expansion pack rather than a sequel to SMB.
All that said, both systems have a wealth of good platformers. The 16 bit era is a treasure trove for the genre. Genesis has some of my favorites like the excellent Decap Attack, but I have more favorites on the SNES.
Sonic is a hold right, avoid shit and do it as fast as you can. Mario has more paths and rewards exploration. Super mario 3 and All stars are much more bang for your buck. I mean you get hundreds of stages vs about 15. All in all though Sonic is just more fun to play.
Technically, but this is back before porting old games to a new system was standard practice! So getting updated version of four full length games one one cartridge, one of which was previously only ever seen in Japan, was a huge fucking deal back then. Remember the first time you saw the Genesis six in one cart, and you find yourself wondering "Holy shit, six games on a single cartridge! How the fuck did they manage this? Sorcery?! It has the be sorcery!" Remember how that felt?
I love Castlevania IV, SMW, Yoshi's Island, Kirby Super Star and Mario All-Stars (although, technically they are just NES games, and personally I prefer the NES graphics; I wasn't a huge fan of the more cartoony style that they went with in All-Stars). Those are pretty much the only ones I can comment on, as I'm not tremendously versed in the SNES library.
Still, Sonic 2, Ristar, Rocket Knight Adventures and S3&K are some of the best platformers I've ever played, and the SNES would be hard pressed to rival these. Even lesser known titles like Decap Attack and Tiny Toons Adventures are better than a lot of the SNES platformers I've sampled.
If you haven't already you should also look into playing "Front Mission: Gun Hazard" ,
basically the same exact gameplay of Cybernator , but with a few RPG elements as well :)
A bunch of the people behind Cybernator worked on it as well :D

Platformers were what I played most BITD, and the Mega Drive was my console of choice at the time. So that's an easy pick.
Demon's Crest is extremely overrated.
The Genesis has the better Disney games. Mario versus Sonic is pretty much a tie, and Virgin games were usually better on Genesis too (EWJ, Cool Spot). So it's hard to give this one to the SNES, even though it had some great exclusive platformers of its own (DKC, Sky Blazer, Metroid if that counts as a platformer).
Action platformers I'd say it's a tie, but for pure platformers you can't get around the Genesis.
There should be a "draw" option in the poll, both systems have equally impressive libraries here.
It depends on what you prefer, depth (SNES) or pure fun (MD).
Genesis for impact. It also has the advantage that some of its hype games were actually good, whilst on the SNES the more commercial attention they were given the lamer they tended to be. But SNES is the better choice for those into other genres of twitch gaming such as shooters, fighters, and certain racing styles, as most of its platformers are more relaxed, exploratory, and feature some means of saving.
Yes Super Metroid's a platformer (and soporific).
Mario All Stars ruined its games' original graphics.
Skyblazer is so good I have to affirm it even though Olls already has.
Hagane, and even Musya (= 'Musha' except for proprietary reasons) should be recommended.
Megadrive walks it for me on Sonic alone
I voted for the SNES on the basis of the Mario games, Super Metroid and the Mega Man X games alone.
Super Metroid was one seriously atmospheric game, and MMX was quite literally what people were clamoring for as far as 16 big Mega Man goes.
Super Metroid is a cool game, something I can't say about too many games on the SNES:) Mario games are fun but the style is too saccharine for me. The "attitude" Sega imbued Sonic with is one of the things that made Sonic games, and the Genesis platform in general, more appealing to me.
LOL; I do remember that feeling quite well:) Just asking if it's fair to include the NES Mario games when evaluating which system has better platformers (no matter how awesome it was to have them spruced up for the SNES).
Edt: Sorry about the double post; bad form, that.
Rocket Knight Adventures and the Sonic games made me go for Genesis though Mega Man X made it a little tough.
If they were completely untouched ports, I'd be inclined to agree with you.
The Mega Drive had more better ones, but the SNES had the best. Nothing on the Mega Drive really came close to the sheer perfection of Mario IV (in a world perfect) Super Metroid (in a world perfect), Castlevania IV (almost perfect) and Prince of Persia (the best version of the game on any system)
Snes's Prince of Persia was over the top, and this is coming from someone who ate/slept the PC version back in the day.
