^I'd rep you for that correction... But the site won't let me... :(
He did swipe a number of things, but he also had quite a few things he actually invented as well. REAL inventions, not these phony "is not" inventions you see these days... and I use the term invention sarcastically as I don't consider them inventions at all.
Jobs was just a businessman who knew how to take advantage of people's "Ooooo shiny!" reflex. He has a big place in the world of computers, but there's no need to inflate his image with comparisons to REAL inventors and pioneers.
By saying REAL inventors you're implying jobs is one. He isn't. Like I said, he was an innovator and a visionary, which is different.
Claiming he was little more than a businessman who knew how to take advantage of people's "Oooo shiny!" reflex is something that can only come from someone that hasn't used apple products. It's not about the "shinyness", it's the attention to detail.
Use a regular trackpad, then use a mac trackpad. See the difference. Sure, jobs didn't design the trackpads on macs, but he made sure they were that way, he understood the importance.
That's something other businessman lack, and a big reason why he's admired.
I said there was no reason to compare him to real inventors, implying he ISN'T one. I guess you read that wrong. :)
I've used Apple products since the Apple II days. I've still got my iMac set up, but I run Xubuntu on it more often than OSX (it's set to triple boot Xubuntu, OSX, and OS9).Quote:

No, it's shininess. :DQuote:

There are PLENTY of PC companies who had just as much an eye for details. Ever tried a Toshiba Libretto? Now THERE'S a palm top computer! Jobs just found the proper mix of shininess vs detail and spun it with good advertising (something MS has NEVER figured out).Quote:

Look, regardless of whether or not you like his products, there's no denying the man's influence. Jobs ushered in the very idea of a home computer. Granted, he didn't actually invent many of the products he came out with, but he made them better and, more importantly, made them known. He didn't invent the home computer, mouse, graphic interface, mp3 player, etc., but he designed brilliant versions of them and made people want them. He changed the way we communicate as a society in so many ways. I don't think any single person has had a greater impact on the world the past 30 years than Steve Jobs.
