I went to a Goodwill today. They had about 5 Genesis games CIB for $2 a piece. Mostly sports titles except for Street Fighter II Tournament Edition. They also had about 4 SNES games loose. These were all sports titles, but were priced at $4 a piece. So, is the popular perception that SNES games are automatically worth twice as much as Genesis games, ignoring CIB versus loose condition? Why?
I've noticed this in the past as well. All I can figure is that either it's because SNES came out 2 years after, making it slightly newer, or the person who priced the games was a Nintendo fanboy who figured they were worth more.
your just paying for the name everyone and their grandma knows who Nintendo is.
You can't suppose CIB vs loose means anything at Goodwill? Besides you wouldn't desire knowledgeable appraisals where you're trying to score a bargain.
Anyhow, here are some suggestions why =
(1): SNES cartridges are twice as large.
(2): Only actual gamers are aware sports titles have no value. The natural assumption would be they're as appealing as everything else sports.
(3): Genesis came out two years earlier, ie when many people still bought for NES, so the older staff who oversee pricing (which likely isn't determined store by store) remember it as a coeval of the NES.
(4): They've glanced online. Not an unreasonable action.
(5): SNES truly is more popular.
(6): Goodwill employees get their rocks off goading Sega-16 members.
(7): Most Sega-16 members secretly work at Goodwill and are trying to discreetly give their fellow members a break.
Better to find a cib copy of musha for cheap then :D

Chrono Trigger isn't rare. A common game that is highly sought. So your point... is not. :P
Whereas I just picked up a set of official wireless Genny controllers for FREE at Goodwill the other day - thrown in with a very cheap Saturn. My first Goodwill experience is good. Long live cheap Genny things and stuffs.
SNES Chrono Trigger may not be rare, but price it sometime on ebay and see what it sells for.
It has to do with peoples perception of the two brands. After the Genesis Sega slowly sunk and eventually had to pull out of the market. While Nintendo had some trouble they managed to at least keep there name alive in peoples minds. Now days sadly more people than not look down on Sega looking at like a brand X.
Oh, I know what it sells for. I bought my mint CIB copy a couple years ago for $90 when it was already selling in the $150-200 range for that condition. And I felt like that was a steal. That's also back when Earthbound was selling between $150-200, and it's now in the $400-500 range. Most of the pricing these days is due to games being sought more so than their actual rarity - particularly so on Big N machines. There are also higher margins on Nintendo stuff due to its continued popularity. Not as many people seek Genny games which is certainly a good thing as far as collecting goes.Quote:

In general though (ie without actually looking at each game), SNES, NES, and N64 games do garner greater interest (and prices) than Genesis games on average, so blanket prices like that make sense.
I was actually at a convenience store about 12 years ago, and they were selling NES and SNES games for the same price. I remember trying to choose between a loose copy of "Mighty Final Fight" or a CIB "Super Metroid". Both were $10 each, but I could only get one.
Believe it or not, I actually chose "Mighty Final Fight" over "Super Metroid".
Super Metroid is one of my favorite games of all time but you made the right choice.
I rarely look at the prices anymore. Everytime I go to the Goodwill they have some sports game that I don't care for or some game that I already own. And on the SNES sides it's always WOF or Jeapordy.
