Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (home computer ports)

In 1991, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior was released in arcades and was immensely popular. As was the case with any immensely popular arcade hit back in the day, the original SFII was ported to a variety of systems. Most of us have played or owned the SNES/Super Famicom port of this classic video game, but some others may have gotten stuck with the PC versions. The official PC ports (the ones licensed by Capcom) include the IBM PC (MS-DOS), Commodore 64, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, and Commodore Amiga. Which of these is the best and which is the worst?

I have the MS Dos and Amiga versions. The Dos version is far superior to the Amiga version. they might look similar, but the amiga version really doesn't feel like street fighter at all. it contains none of the subtleties of the normal game - Ken's Dragon Punch, for example, is entirely vertical with absolutely no horizontal movement, making it into a drastically different move. It's slow, choppy, and not a lot of fun. The MS dos version is pretty similar to the console versions, but I'll go back to either the PC Engine or Genesis versions any day.

The worst port of Street Fighter II (any version) I've played in person has to be Super Street Fighter II Turbo on the CD32. Terrible port, only like 1/4 of the total animation remains.

I've seen videos of the C64, Spectrum, and ST versions. The Amiga version is basically a port of the ST version, as was the norm with those two computers. The Spectrum version gets a lot of flack, but I think, considering the hardware, it's impressive, in much the same way SF2 running on the Gameboy is. The C64 version really bares little resemblance to SF2 period, I think it'll likely be the run-away winner for "worst port."

Just saw a vid of the Amiga/Amiga CD32 version of Super Turbo. Looks nice and has the awesome soundtrack from the PC version, but is completely butchered. The kneeing sprite is only ONE FUCKING FRAME LONG! Also the Sonic Boom looks like ass too, and only has one frame of animation as well.

There's also the Amiga port of Super SF2, which, while not looking or sounding nice, plays way closer to the arcade original (from what I've read and seen), and it supports the CD32 controller too. Surprisingly enough this one was published by US Gold.

However, the best home version of any Street Fighter II version is Eurocom's fantastic MS-DOS version of Super Turbo. Same graphics as the arcade (kept in the original resolution, which causes the screen to look quite cramped), awesome arrangements of the music (same as the CD32 version) and the same gameplay as the original arcade game. It is the definitive home computer version of the game (unless you have MAME, but that doesn't count)

Although I'm not sure why I'm commenting on this since I've never played any computer version of any Street Fighter II variation.

Were any of the bonus stages included in the PC ports?

The Dos version was utter shit! I still don't know whose stupid idea it was to swap Ken's stage music and the intro tunes.

X68000 got the best port of SFIICE. Not a big surprise.

A Japanese computer gets the good port and everyone else got utter shit? Yeah that sounds about right.

For home computer ports the X68000 and FM towns really take the crown as the definitive Computer ports of those games. Though as mentioned the MS-DOS CD version of Super Turbo was just as good as if not better than the X68000 port.

The Commodore 64 port is definitely the worst. Horrible graphics, sound and you have to pull off your moves using only ONE button. I can't say which one is best since the only other one I've played was the DOS port and it was horrible.

A few Amiga ports support 2-button controllers and the 6-button CD32 pad, but they have other problems beyond controls.

Speaking of 1-button fighting games, Shadow Fighter by Gremlin only used 1 button, and it's probably the best fighter on the entire system (only Fightin' Spirits by Neo gives it competition, and that game uses 6-buttons). Of course, Shadow Fighter was designed around 1-button, and plays sorta like Virtua Fighter (in terms of control, not mechanics) in that there are different moves dedicated to pressing the button in conjunction with a direction. Overall a pretty great game, I suggest you try it if you ever have the chance.

I hated playing SF with a 3 button controller, but I can only fathom the pain with 1 button.

It's as awful as it sounds. A lot of moves got changed as a result... I believe Lemon Amiga has a move list if you're curious.

Mortal Kombat got the same treatment, and it faired far worse. Stuff like Up+Back+Button = High kick. And none of the moves were even remotely similar.

Luckily, as I pointed out, most have at least 2 button support. Which essentially makes it play like the gameboy port of SF2.

TO FOOT SWEEP : Press DOWN then AWAY.
TO ROUNDHOUSE : Press AWAY + HIGH KICK.
TO EXECUTE A FLYING PUNCH: JUMP or FLIP + TAP FIRE.
TO EXECUTE A FLYING KICK : JUMP or FLIP + HOLD FIRE.
