Are Mario games getting bland?

Everybody who has disagreed with me thus far is incorrect and I expect long messages apologising for these errors.

Firstly there was only so far you can take a chap running and jumping, except for Mario Kart which was just chuffing awesome.

Secondly, the Mario series has been on its way downhill ever since the sheer awesome that was Mario 3. Take the fanboyism away and Super Mario World was average at best and don't get me started on Yoshi's Island which was abject tosh followed by more abject tosh. Then we get to the most overrated game of the series - Mario 60 frigging 4. My God, once you take away the extreme fanboyism of Mario being in 3D then you will realise that Mario doesn't work in 3D. Cumbersome, cute and just a vomit fest from start to end. Give me some pure Super Mario Land action any day of the week.

So in conclusion, the assertion that Mario is getting bland is a good decade too late.

Ok, now the apologies can start (and preferably with "The wise and noble Mr Smith has opened my eyes to the truth" and I'm not talking Raul here)

I wasn't talking about newER IP, I was talking about new, as in brand new, IP. Call of Duty and Battlefield are not new IP, they were once, but then they were (ahem) sold off to various developers for great profit. Also, heavily marketed first or second party titles on a platform starved for exclusives tend to sell well when the fanbase is, well, fanboyish enough.

The point is these games (when new) still competed quite well with the machine known as Mario and still do very well with each new entry. Looking at series such as Forza, Uncharted, Batman (AA & AC), etc.., I still consider them to be relatively new. They haven't been around for thirty years yet put up impressive numbers. An overall quality library is more important then exclusives. Mario has sold well and has a solid following on systems on systems that offered plenty of variety and choices of games so it goes beyond exclusives as the factor for sales.

I hate to say it, but i agree with Smith:) Although I did like Mario 64, I think the series did peak at SMB3.

Batman Arkham Asylum is new IP, Arkham City is just a well received sequel. Also, the rest of these popular games today are in established genres with very minor modifications to the accepted gameplay of another franchise.

I chose the wrong term, I didn't mean new IP, I meant new games, new games don't have a chance against franchises today.

I, too, haven't been interested in anything Mario since Mario 64.

On the bright side, though, this game looks a lot like Mario 64, so that's a plus.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Wii in general, but I think the two Mario Galaxy titles rank among the very best experiences from this generation of gaming. Outside of stodgy cynicism or just plain irrational dislike of all things Nintendo, I don't see how anyone who really loves gaming could NOT enjoy them.

Everytime I've thought of picking up a new 3D Mario title, I remember Mario 64 and decide not to buy the new one.

I played about 4 levels of this at a trade show a couple of months ago and I liked it a lot, its nothing like most of the 3D mario games, it kind of felt like a purposeful attempt at putting Super Mario Bros 3 into 3D (it even has Racoon suit, and battleship levels), there didn't seem to be any collecting stuff gameplay, just linear platform jumping.

From what I played, I would liken it to the Bowser levels of Mario 64, but with Super Mario 3s style and items, but like I said, I only played a handful of stages.
