Forgive me if this has already been talked about, but has anyone heard anything about the DC SD card adapter?

Yeah, they are getting fairly popular now. I've got one myself. You can order them from China, or they even sell them on eBay now. The DC SD adapter uses the serial port, which isn't that fast, so don't expect a lot of speed from it. It's FAR slower than the CD, but what it does give you is storage and a faster seek time. So the SD is better for games with lots of smaller files, and much worse for streaming from a file.
Have you tried any emulators or homebrew on it? I might try putting some movies and emulators on it if they run ok. I just picked one up off ebay.:) It sounds like it would be a good way for me to play neo geo games without having to own a neogeo. I have some nice arcade sticks for DC that would be perfect.
I hear Dreamshell 4 beta 4 you can boot up without the disc?
I have both emulators and homebrew on the SD... that's what it is best for. Media is not - as I mentioned, streaming a file is much faster from the CD since there's no seeking randomly, so while you can play media off the SD, you'd be better off having the media player on the SD and putting the media themselves on CD. I'm not sure the DC SD is fast enough to make video worthwhile off the SD. Music should be fine, but a lossless format like FLAC will push the transfer rate of the SD adapter.
So if you mean just low to medium bitrate MP3 or OGG, playing from the SD should be fine.
You can boot Dreamshell from the SD, but you still need a disc to boot it. That's how I have mine setup - you boot the CD, which has almost nothing on it other than the booter, that then checks the SD for Dreamshell and loads it, then you are running completely off the SD and can remove the CD or leave it depending on whether you need another disc in the CD (like a CD full of movie files). I normally leave the boot CD in the drive all the time and run everything off the SD card.Quote:

Ah I see. Thanks for the info Chilly!:)
How much is it chilly??
Can you run games like Quake, Doom & others on the SD Card ...I know it's slow loading DC ISO's

My total came to $26.14 and took just under 7 weeks. If you can get one from eBay, it'll probably be quicker.
You can run Doom from the SD... not sure if someone has made an SD version of Quake yet. It is indeed slow, but you avoid a LOT of GDROM drive activity, so it helps preserve your drive. I hate the sound from the GDROM when I run Doom on CD... it makes me cringe at all the seeking back and forth it's doing.Quote:

You would need to check the proper threads over at someplace like dcemulation.org for SD versions of programs and homebrew. There's quite a few things, and more all the time.
Looks pretty cool, I'mma get one of those soon!
I'm buying one next year..little tight for the holidays
