Yeah but considering how most FF games are basically "press x to win" affairs, I don't really see how that's a bad thing. Many RPGs pretty much play themselves with very little human interaction to begin with. FFXII was more about setting up you team for battles than actually participating in them, although you can always stop the action and give your own orders if you wanted. It reminds me of something like Ogre Battle in that respect (not surprising, as the lead designer was behind both games). Kinda like a strategy game.
I spent 130 hours on FFXII and I loved every second of it. If you wanna talk about FF games as chores, I would have to point to the first two games in the series, particularly the second. There is very little to those games besides the endless grind, and unlike Phantasy Star or Final Fantasy Legend, I really don't find it very enjoyable there.
Anyway, FFXII is far and away my favorite game in the series. I still like VI, and VII, and X, and V quite a bit though. Never played IX. I've tried to play FFIV a few times and I could never really get into it.
After awhile of playing the game I actually did the glitch with the Neglamanunger (sp?) where you can just set it to play by itself so you can get the AP to level your characters because I couldn't stand the grinding and 4 hour dungeons with 3 save points. I remember doing that for a couple of days while I slept/worked and then actually finished the game.
I'm sure plenty of people enjoyed the game because it sold well and was pretty well received, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
