I picked up a GBP for my GC about a year back. Unfortunately, it did not come with a boot disc. I looked at Nintendo's website and they still sold replacement GBP discs about a year ago, but I did not have the funds. Fast forward, and I found a GBP boot disc at Goodwill this past week. Now, I want to know what games are recommended for this great add-on. Are GBA games preferred over GB and GBC? I have a few GB games to try on it, but would like to expand my gaming options on it.
I followed the Gameboy player and bought it the weekend it came out specifically to play GBA games on my TV. I had a launch GBA and hated it because I couldn't play the damned thing. The games on it were great, but I couldn't see shit.
Once the GBP arrived, my gamecube became a permanent GBA machine. Basically a second SNES. I have a ton of GBA games, and the vast majority of them have never been in a real gameboy.
I recommend both Metroid titles, the Sonic titles, metal slug advance, mario kart, the advance war games, the mario & luigi games, and minish cap to start yourself off with. You might also want to track down one of those Hori SNES-style GCN controllers. It really enhances the experience.
Also, you should look into obtaining a flash cart and playing Mother 3 on real hardware. It doesn't play quite right in emulation, as the combo timing is off.
That said, I was a huge fan of Super Gameboy and usually play my GB games on that particular machine, but gameboy color games always went into my GB Player, because it could act like a gameboy color. That meant it let me play games like Legend of Zelda DX, Metal Gear Solid, and Megaman Xtreme 1 and 2 on my TV. I think a lot of gameboy games are just as fun as any other game and completely worth playing on a TV.
Let's see, good GB, GBC, and GBA games for play on the big screen... in MY opinion anyway.

I highly recommend a link cable to play with your GBA as your controller (unless you already have some gimmicky pre-Gamecube pad connection; which might allow you to play using a SNES pad or better). Just about the only reason I don't play my Game Boy Player now is because of the terrible shoulder buttons my 10 or so GC pads came with. Now, playing my original GB games through my Super Game Boy using a good ol' SNES pad, that's the stuff. :D

1. Again. Get yourself that cheap link cable (they still sell it at GameStop) so you can play using your GBA as your controller.

Y, I have a Super Game Boy also for my SNES, but it does not allow play of GBA games.
That's why I use my GBA as my controller when playing with my Game Boy Player. But I'm a purist. I play my original GB games on my Super Game Boy, GBA (and most GBC) games on the Game Boy Player. But like I said, I haven't used it lately. Anyways, what's your take on your current game pad peripheral then? What r u using atm?
GBA Player was a fucking love letter from Nintendo. The entire Gameboy library, spanning from 1989 to 2005, playable on your TV.

Having said that, the Game Boy Player is great. Some people say it suffers from slight lag, but I did some tests and didn't notice any difference between real hardware and the GBP with the GBC game I tested. The GameCube controllers are a drag though, since the D-pads are pretty lousy, and I don't think the GBA itself is much better. A Hori pad would sure be nice to have.

The GB Player is my primary method of playing GBA games (and GBC games, but I hardly play any). Original GB games are better played on a Super Game Boy (better colors, sometimes exclusive features). There are four games (that I personally care about) that are incompatible with the GB Player: Wario Ware Twisted, Yoshi Topsy-Turvy, Kirby Tilt n' Tumble, and Pocket Music. The former three require tilting the system around, and the latter is programmed to only work on a genuine Game Boy Color system and nothing else. Notably, Drill Dozer, which has a built-in rumble feature, also supports rumble through a Gamecube controller. Unfortunately, the Hori digital controller doesn't have rumble.
I love the GBA. I have 99 games for it, and a dud ain't one. No seriously, my GBA collection consists of 99 games.

Also I play almost all my Gameboy games on my DS or GB player now since I have a hard time seeing on my Gameboy and Gameboy Advance screens due to the lack of lighting.
Advance Wars > Over everything else.
As a recovering AW addict I can honestly tell you that game has taken more of my life than possibly anything else ever.
I must have spent nearly every night since 2002 to 2005 until my Gameboy was stolen from me, playing that game.
It got so bad I would calculate damage ratios for the different CO's before I went to sleep...
Actually looking back that strikes me as really weird.
