7th Generation Appreciation Thread

In the interests of diversifying talk round here, which appears largely opposed to this generation, and of hopefully keeping some of our elder members who've tired of discussing every last pixel of every last Genesis game coming back, I formally crack the champagne bottle on the keel of this thread.

As this era seems to be closing we should all by now have found something we like about or have crystallized our arguments against the consoles and software
of the seventh gen.
These systems are = PS3, 360, Wii, DS, PSP. Wii U, 3DS, and PS Vita will belong to 8th gen.

Like it seems many forum members I expected nothing but dullness and rehashing from this generation, yet for me at least there've been a few exceptions.

To get things rolling: I've so far enjoyed Catherine (PS3), Sonic Colors (DS), Radiant Historia (DS), Demon's Souls (PS3), and a bit of Sonic All Star Racing. I also like the six axis control much better than I'd expected. I've only the PS3 and DS with only 30 games between them; those of you with more please be more expansive.

I'm pretty much a casual gamer these days when it comes to new games as I only have a Wii and dont have the same passion for gaming as I used to.

Some Wii games I liked are:

Castlevania Judgement. I know it got a bad reception but I enjoyed it.

Capcom vs Tatsunoko. Didnt care for the Tastsunko characters but it was a must have game if you are a fighing fan.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. The Crystal Bearers. Pretty much a must buy if youre a FF fan with a Wii.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Fun, short little game.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop. Not as good as on XBox but still worth the purchase if you dont have XBox.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Yeah the Metroid Prime series is really good.

I've only purchased a 360 this generation, but I have enjoyed numerous XBLA games, especially N+, Worms Armaggeddon, Outrun, Virtual On Oratario Tangram, and Death Tank. I have also spent a good deal of time racing online with my college roommate with Forza 3, and we also tend to like blasting zombies in Cod:Blops. Earlier on Virtua Fighter 5 and Sega Rally Revo were really important to me.

Single player wise I have repeatedly played through Golden Axe Beast Rider, Bullet Witch, Batman Arkham Asylum and now Arkham City. I played through Bayonetta but basically hated it the entire time. I have more games that I haven't tapped yet, but these are pretty much what has defined this generation for me.

The only console I have from this generation is a DS Lite, and although I haven't touched it in nearly two years, it has some great games, like "Ys: Books I & II", "Metal Slug 7", "Mega Man ZX", "Lunar Knights", and more.

I might not be the gamer that I used to be, but this era did bestow uppon me a lot of fun filled hours,
summing up my best gaming experiences this generation I'd have to say..

Bethesda games (buggy as they are), Phoenix Wright games, Mortal Kombat 9, House of the Dead Overkill, Red Dead Redemption, and the many versions of Street Fighter IV.

Yep not a bad run, would have been a bigger list if i hadn't become so picky with my games.

Oh and that Ghostbusters game, only really worth playing through once but oh damn what an experience for a GB's fan like me.

Don't take the genre categories too seriously. There's a lot of overlap between them and I was trying to make it easier for me to remember stuff.

It's not my favourite gen. There's a lot of dumbing down/handholding crap and other irritations but overall it's still been pretty awesome.

Those are the games I've actually beaten off the top of my head. I only owned a Wii and 360 this generation.

There's not really anything this generation that's stuck with me. I haven't played Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Xenoblade Chronicles or Catherine yet, though, and I'm sure I'll love all of those games. Likewise for the Kirby games on the DS, and Wario Ware D.I.Y.

This generation so far has left a bad taste in my mouth. Both the Wii and 360 purchases for me felt like a total waste.

I love Hard Corps: Uprising. Finally this generation brought some true 2D fast-paced action.

7th gen games look cool, but they take too long to play and get into. I don't have time for the new systems.

I have a Wii and a DS. No, not because I'm Nintendo-oriented, but because they were the cheapest and most affordable of the 7th gen systems. I think I also have just about 20 or so titles between them, so there's not much of a base from which to form an opinion on the 7th gen. Still, I'll give my faves:

Wii:

3. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

Want:
1. Contra
2. Some random, exclussive RPGs and sidescrollers. Not much here, really.

I don't have a PS3, 360, PSP, or even an HDTV. One day, maybe. I can see myself getting a 32" LCD sometime next year. I guess the systems will come after that. But I suppose it ain't over till the fat lady sings; and the fat lady is the big fat cash cow that still is the 7th gen, and the singing is when I start seeing PS3s and 360s at Goodwill ;).

The Wii has given me countless hours of enjoyment, but with the devs leaving it high and dry, I'm not sure where I'm going next gen, as the WiiU is a complete turn-off, I still can't stand Sony's poor attitude, and I'm not sure what direction Microsoft is going.

If you have a Wii, you need to play Fragile Dreams; it's very overlooked, and it's probably one of the best games I've played in recent memory.

I've enjoyed Arkham Asylum, FF13, and the Lost Planet games as well, but there's not a lot in this generation's consoles that's made me say "I MUST PLAY THIS!" Handhelds however are the new platform of choice for JRPGs it seems, and I've got more to tackle on the PSP and DS iteration that time.

Fragile Dreams is kind of weak for gameplay but it's worth playing for the atmosphere.

That reminds me, another current gen game I loved is Nier. It doesn't do anything exceptionally well for gameplay but it's a surreal world that drew me in. The music is amazing, too.
