I think they could have easily gotten away with calling this one Doom III, as not a single asset from the first two games were used in its creation.

It's more of proper sequel than Doom II. I always wanted to see it ported to PSX and Saturn bitd. I thought that it would be cool to see the game unfiltered and un-mood altered.
I just picked up a N64 again last night and the one game I bought with it is Doom 64. I'm looking forward to playing through it again. :)
It was "ported" to the PC twice, the latter effort is a direct port. You need the actual n64 rom to extract the Wad from. This means everything is authentic as possible. DOOM64 EX
I didn't like the music, so I never made it very far into the game
Doom 64 is my personal favorite Doom game of all time. I prefer the ambient soundtrack over the guitar tracks in the original 2 games.
You make an interesting point. The game would get much more respect(and probobly would have sold better) had it been called Doom III.
Here is a link to a past discussion about the game(3 pages long):http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...hlight=Doom+64
Hrm it actually does look pretty good but I've never played it. It's definitely not an original Doom game, but if you think of it as a true sequel I think it look good. I wouldn't mind picking it up for the N64 and trying it out.
People split pretty evenly on that point: maybe half like the "regular" music, and the rest like the ambient soundtracks like the N64 or PSX versions. Personally, I like both, and an option to have either strikes me as something good to have on ports. It's why most PC source ports of Doom allow you to do your own soundtrack. Then you can use whatever you like best - the original music, or variations on it, or something more ambient. It's funny how often id changes on that respect... Doom/Doom II has music, Quake has ambient tracks, Quake II has music...
:D
I have always wanted to play this game.
Ambient fits Doom64, because it compliments the look. They have some very well designed levels. I just played "Watch your step", one of those "We're throwing everything at you, kitchen sink included!" levels.
I liked Doom 64 a lot and always thought it was an underrated Doom game. Even though the gameplay was "dated" by that time, the "point and shoot" nature of Doom was and still is a lot of fun. That retained simplicity and improved atmosphere made for perhaps the best classic Doom ever made (look ma, no pixels!).
Classic Doom > Modern Doom afaic.
I have Doom 3 on the Xbox and it was ok I mean it was scary as fuck but it wasn't as fun as the old Dooms. I think I spent more time on 1 and 2 than playing 3.
I always thought Doom 64 was just another Doom 1 port. I was pretty set with my 32X version, but now that I know this, I might just get it.
