I was a Game Gear fan and not a big Game boy fan. I was intrigued by a few GB games like the Fantasy Fantasy Legend games, Mega Man, Contra, etc. but I didnt really want one and was content with my Game Gear. I did get a green Game Boy pocket one year for XMas and got 2 games (Zelda & Star Wars) but I barely played them. Just couldnt get into the hard to see black & white screen regardless of how good the games were.
Nope, I love mine.
I love mine as well, but I also love the Game Gear just as much, if not more. There's good games on nearly every console if you take the time to look.:)
Game Boy has a lot of good games yes but I never had the urge to go out and get them.
I think it's a terrific platform with a lot of great games, but I find the original hardware almost unusable because of the display. I play GB games almost exclusively on a GBA SP or, when I'm at home, a Super Game Boy or Game Boy Player.
I never really cared for it. The original hardware is terrible, and the library is vastly overrated.
Not me. I love my Gameboy. There're so many great games, I can't wait to discover more awesome titles in the future. That's the thing about mainstream hardware, you get more games, and good ones at that. Even if the hardware isn't up to par with its competitors. Link's Awakening, 'nough said.
I love my Game Gear, too, though. Crystal Warriors, 'nough said.
My Grandad's lawnmower did'nt like my gameboy, it mauled it.
Games may be good but that screen makes me want to vomit... Luckily there is Super Gameboy :D
I always thought it was terrible.
I can remember when my first few friends got them imported from Japan and it seemed quite cool at first but was really attracted to the Lynx with its colour screen and I am glad I waited a little while. The Lynx was superior in every single way for me. The GB had a horrid blurry screen, beepy sound, simple games and the monchrome was just the final nail in coffin. I was enjoying arcade quality games in my hands while others were getting eye strain.

I have been meaning to go back and check out the Gameboy library with the Super Gameboy or GBA player. As it stands I could not stand the Gameboy as a hand held, everything about it is ugly. I'd rather play my Lynx or Game Gear by a solid mile.
I like the library but not the system, that screen is just.... ugh, godawful.
The GameBoy Color allows you to play original GB games with some added colors, making the original GB pointless. It even has custom palettes for a few games (I know it had for Super Mario Land 2).
I loved the Gameboy and it's awful cream spinach display. It had sum great games and was actually the best portable system. The GG, Lynx and TE were huge systems and that pretty much defeated the purpose of being portable.
Meh, my real authentic Lynx and Game Gear cases are smaller than some textbooks and handily hold the portable, an AC adapter and upwards of twenty game cartridges. As I never play games while people are around this is as portable as I need it to be.

I hate how much the GB overshadows the Lynx and GG but I was and still am a big fan of it.
There are plenty of good games on it beyond the big name franchises: Solomon's Club, Trip World, Catrap, Mr. Chin's Gourmet Paradise, Revenge of the Gator, Trax, Burai Fighter Deluxe, etc..
My opinion may be different then some because I was around when it was new. I love it. Yes the screen blurs and I wish that wasn't such a problem but it didn't keep from beating games. I love how it inherited the awesome goofy feeling of early NES games complete with the cheesy chip tune bass lines. I played it much more often then my Game Gear thanks to the decent battery life . Also I recall my Game Gear screen blurring as well, maybe not as bad but it blurred.
The GB screen didn't bother me much. In direct sunlight it's clearer than the GG and Lynx but in regular indoor lighting it's worse.
I loathe this system and oftenest bethink it when gamers trash the reward style gameplay so prevalent on current consoles as the Gameboy's lasting attraction is short games (every)one can beat and mentally pocket. It's wholly removed from the case of the DS where the library is fantastic and I regret the crappy hardware, both the GB's hardware and its games bore me at best. Tetris is of course the exception to this but not enough.
The original GB is probably my favorite Nintendo platform. I had an old DMG for years and hated the screen, then I got a japanese GBP and it is so much better. The screen is bigger, a lot clearer, less blurry, and actually black and white. I bought a backlight kit and plan to mod it. Few consoles have so many great games for such low prices. I can take or leave the GBC. All I ever knew it for BITD was Pokemon, which I hated, and licensed shovelware. The screen sucks too. Not many consoles hold as much nostalgic value as the original GB.
When both were alive and kicking, I got a game gear in 91 and a gameboy in 95. Even after getting my gameboy (which I liked a whole bunch, mind you, I think it's one of the best systems ever), I played my game gear way more for one specific reason:

Probably the best portable peripheral I ever picked up. This, along with the rechargable battery pack that clipped onto my belt, made my game gear one of the greatest console ever. I had a HUGE sega master system library (well over 100 at that time, by comparison, I had only a handful of GG games, maybe 15-20) and being able to play Fantasy Zone II or Wonderboy III on the road was just too much.
My gameboy was fun to play at home. My game gear was fun to play on the road. That master gear converter made so many boring family reunions tolerable.
I bought a Master Gear Converter back then, too. It was really cool for some games but a lot had graphical glitches and a few didn't work at all. I really wanted to play portable Penguin Land but it wouldn't work.
Yeah, quite a few games had graphical glitches, usually those which used the mini-super scalar effect (like Space Harrier). It also had problems with 4 megabit games, like afterburner, although Phantasy Star ran alright (although, why would you ever want to play PS on your GG? Text on the thing was awful).Quote:

I had both a Game Gear and Game Boy Pocket when I was kid and I loved them both. I tend to focus more on the Game Boy these days and I can't remember the last time I whipped out the GG, but I wouldn't get rid of the GG for anything.
If you've got a working game gear that you don't use, you should sell it. Working game gears are getting pretty hard to find.Quote:

I'd bought an Atari Lynx instead of the Gameboy. I really didn't have an interest in the games available for the Gameboy at the time. I'd later pick up a Super Gameboy and Donkey Kong Vs., or whatever it was called, but I didn't play it much. I eventually bought a Gameboy Color and Zelda: Oracle of Ages. I loved the GB Brick/Classic. Used to play so many great games during the school lunch hour; from Super Mario Land 1 & 2, Tetris, Star Wars, R-Type DX to Gargoyle's Quest, the Pokemon games and so much more. The only game that truly disgusted me was Alone in the Dark The New Nightmare; best graphics for the system, by that I mean if you leave the game idle - when your character starts moving, he became a horrid glitched stickman. Gameplay was no better; like a very poor man's Zelda II. Took it back an hour after I got it, it was that bad.
I personally think the Game Boy is great tbh, it has such an excellent library of games, the screen is a little... invisible, but a backlighting kit from noninfinite + the gameboy pocket is pretty much perfect for me.
The Game Gear and Lynx have colour but are absolutely massive and have terrible battery life.
At the time, it was a cheap affordable way to get some gaming that was up to the quality of NES. You have to understand that color portables were way expensive and other handhelds tended to be like these:

I had tons of these things before I got a Gameboy. The Gameboy was a godsend.
IMO, though, the Gameboy Advance is the ultimate pinnacle of non-touch-screen portables.
I think time has dulled perception of the gameboy's size a bit. the original brick gameboy - the model I have - isn't really small or anything. It's small-ER than the game gear, yeah, but it's still huge. You could never fit it into a pocket for example, it's about as big as a double-wide DVD case.Quote:

but still, buying a recharagble battery pack adds more to the already higher price point, for a console that has a low resolution for most of the games it plays (lets be honest, Sonic 2 GG is only much harder because you have such limited visiblity so the challenge isnt even fair)
Just my opinion though, the SMS is pretty good but I could easily pass on the game gear, love the Game Boy though.
Clip on magnifier screen with light and stereo speakers made the original gameboy a nice system, and did away with all the complaints of small, dark, screen.
