There are a couple of good Mortal Kombats for the system. Not MK Advance, steer clear of that turd. I'm talking about Dark Alliance and Tournament Edition.

It often seems to me that the GBA library is one of the most overlooked.
I agree with you on SSS. It's also terribly unbalanced. The random battles kept giving me a giant slow moving ship with a one shot at a time gun against smaller, faster, more powerful ships. It didn't help that save points were so far apart. Cheap is the word.
Also, if OP is getting a GBA SP then get the version that came out last with the brighter screen.
edit: GBA SP is one of the best hand held consoles ever.
Thanks for the recommendations. I was thinking of getting the Phantasy Star and Sega Arcade collections. Is the version of the SP with the bright screen easy to find? I know it came out pretty late. The game shop in my town only had the front lit SPs, so I passed on it. How much should I expect to pay? I wouldn't be willing to go over $30.
Model # AGS-101, in colors "Pearl Blue", "Pearl Pink" and "Graphite".
That's some info to help make sure you get a backlit one. As for prices, good luck getting it under $30. Expect more like $40 or so unless you go flea market hopping.
Dotstream's a cool game that often gets missed in GBA threads.
No one has mentioned Ninja Five-O, so I'll add it to the list:
As a general rule I recommend staying away from 16-bit ports. They tend to suffer from cropping and poor sound. Short list of recommendations:
Astro Boy: Omega Factor
Car Battler Joe
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
CT Special Forces
Drill Dozer
Gradius Galaxies
Gunstar Super Heroes
Iridion II
Kuru Kuru Kururin (Japan & Europe only)
Lady Sia
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Metroid Fusion
Mr. Driller 2
Ninja Five-O
Pinball of the Dead
Racing Gears Advance
Rhythm Tengoku (Japan only)
Scurge: Hive
Sonic Advance 2
Spy Hunter
Stuntman
TMNT
Tron 2.0: Killer App
Wario Ware: Twisted
I have over 100 GBA games. It truly is a great system.
I thought the 3D arena stuff they did in those games was the coolest thing in the world back in the day. IIRC there was a tekken game which did the same sort of stuff. You should have noted that DA and TE are basically companion games, featuring alternate halves of the full DA cast.
EDIT: As for my contribution to the thread? A game I never, ever see listed on GBA threads: Metal Slug Advance.
I fucking loved that game.
