Got this game in the mail today, and I heard that at one point they were going to do a DX version for the GBC but, because that got canceled, some fans made a hack that colorizes the Rom. But whats the point that when it looks fully colorized when played on a GBC, GBA, or the GB Player?
Basically, the color rom patch was made with particular colors to suit Samus, and the surroundings. The GBC, GBA, and GB Player only has selectable color palettes, and you wont be able to get the exact same colors as the custom color rom.

Well, I'll admit, Samus has good color, but you may also notice that everything else is blue, that's because of the limited color palette. The hacked rom supposedly uses more colors, or at least handles them differently.
Okay, so they wanted something that fully exploited the GBC's range of colors.

It would be nice to see a repro of that color hack, I wonder if anyone has ever done it?
Wouldn't surprise me if they did. Though I'm perfectly happy with my vanilla version.
Yeah, the vanilla version still looks great, and the gameplay is still there. I have to pick that game up sometime, along with a Gameboy Player for my Gamecube.:)
I got it for just under ten bucks, and its pretty common on eBay.
Did they ever finish this patch? Last time I saw it, it only worked for like the first 2 or 3 screens before it broke down and stopped fully colorizing the game.
Same with the Super Mario Land 2 DX patch.
Oh! That's another game I need to get!
Great game, you should check out Mario Land 3: Wario Land as well. I didn't much like the other wario land games, but VB Wario Land and Mario Land 3: Wario Land are amongst the best platformers in the series.Quote:

I might look into those. I love it when a portable iteration of a franchise feels like its own game, as opposed to a scaled down port. The first time I saw Super Mario Land, my first thoughts were "Oh, so it's Super Mario Brother's Lite.", which turned out not to be the case. Completely different animal all together. It even has a couple of shump levels.
Yup! It's even better when they nail the gameplay, like they did with Donkey Kong Land. At that point, they simply become expansion packs to me, which is excellent if I loved the source material in the first place. If you can't get enough Donkey Kong, there are 6 games worth of levels out there.Quote:
