Got this game in the mail today, and I heard that at one point they were going to do a DX version for the GBC but, because that got canceled, some fans made a hack that colorizes the Rom. But whats the point that when it looks fully colorized when played on a GBC, GBA, or the GB Player?
Basically, the color rom patch was made with particular colors to suit Samus, and the surroundings. The GBC, GBA, and GB Player only has selectable color palettes, and you wont be able to get the exact same colors as the custom color rom.

Well, I'll admit, Samus has good color, but you may also notice that everything else is blue, that's because of the limited color palette. The hacked rom supposedly uses more colors, or at least handles them differently.
Okay, so they wanted something that fully exploited the GBC's range of colors.

It would be nice to see a repro of that color hack, I wonder if anyone has ever done it?
Wouldn't surprise me if they did. Though I'm perfectly happy with my vanilla version.
Yeah, the vanilla version still looks great, and the gameplay is still there. I have to pick that game up sometime, along with a Gameboy Player for my Gamecube.:)
I got it for just under ten bucks, and its pretty common on eBay.
Did they ever finish this patch? Last time I saw it, it only worked for like the first 2 or 3 screens before it broke down and stopped fully colorizing the game.
Same with the Super Mario Land 2 DX patch.

Great game, you should check out Mario Land 3: Wario Land as well. I didn't much like the other wario land games, but VB Wario Land and Mario Land 3: Wario Land are amongst the best platformers in the series.Quote:

I might look into those. I love it when a portable iteration of a franchise feels like its own game, as opposed to a scaled down port. The first time I saw Super Mario Land, my first thoughts were "Oh, so it's Super Mario Brother's Lite.", which turned out not to be the case. Completely different animal all together. It even has a couple of shump levels.
Yup! It's even better when they nail the gameplay, like they did with Donkey Kong Land. At that point, they simply become expansion packs to me, which is excellent if I loved the source material in the first place. If you can't get enough Donkey Kong, there are 6 games worth of levels out there.Quote:

For some reason Mario vs Donkey Kong did not do it for me. I love Donkey Kong '94, it's arguably my favorite Nintendo game, but the style of graphics in the MvDK games just really turned me off. I dunno, I expected to love them just based on my love of DK '94, but I think that actually worked against them. Not that I'm recommending against trying them out for yourself; a lot of people seem to enjoy 'em, so they're definitely worth a shot.
Also, I think Wario Land 2 & 3 are better than any of the previous Mario Land games. Not that those bad, they're just kinda standard platformers with power-up hats. Wario Land 2 was where they really established the series IMO and that and the sequel are, I think, the best platformers on the system. I like Wario's invincibility and taking "damage" from different types of enemies to change your power, I love the emphasis on puzzle-solving, I love opening up new areas in a somewhat non-linear fashion, and I just love Wario as a character. After those two games, Wario Land 4 on the GBA was, to me, quite lame in comparison.
That having been said, I haven't played Wario Land on the Virtua Boy yet. But that should be rectified fairly soon.
Its a virtual boy game, so don't get your hopes too high.

Wario Land 4 gave me about the same reaction as you. It was a solid game from what I remember, but it was a step back for the franchise. It wasn't bad, but was inconsistent with what the series had become by then, which was a bit disappointing as I'd have hoped for an advancement of the formula 2 and 3 established with the series. I never played through this one entirely, so I might pick it up again one of these days if I find a legit copy somewhere. I still would love to have a new Wario Land game more in line with 2 and 3. I haven't played Shake It!, so I don't know what formula it follows.
Virtual boy's games place very heavy emphasis on the 3D effects, and because only a small amount of games were ever made for it, it never got past that awkward stage.Quote:

Lots of exploration, puzzles, metroid like upgrades, Wario's quirky personality plus a cast of wacky bosses, HUGE map with changing levels (stuff happens between levels, and they change depending on whether it's night and day), a secret bonus golf game that can only be obtained by finding secret coins in every map, an actual storyline... Wario Land 3 is the best game boy color game IMO, by far.

That color mod looks great! Much easier to tell the lava apart from water. I'm guessing the conventional way to run the mod is on a flash cart? Too bad all the flash carts for the GBA/GB I've looked at don't really seem all that great. I wish krikz would show everyone how it's done. His MD cart damn near tucks you in at night and cooks you breakfast in the morning. :p
