Hi all, what are peoples thought on this game, it was one that i wasn't interested in playing when it first came out as i didn't have an N64 but im playing it now and quite enjoying it
A gaming new years resolution of mine was to try and complete this one, Majora's mask, wind waker and and twilight princess though i've never been big into the game genre
Isnt it kinda hard to play this now because of all the blockiness and bad textures ? Its really an eyesore to look at. I'm not a fan of remakes but yeah this game did need to be remade.
i think it holds up pretty well considering its age, and graphics aren't really a be all and end all of a game for me ( most, if not all, new games rarely have any appeal to me) and its usually in most top 10 games of all time lists.
someone said exactly that to me on facebook today though but he predominantly sticks to his XBOX 360 and thinks im insane for collecting retro games

I enjoyed the game quite a lot, I bought it when it first came out and was like the second game I owned for my N64 for a very long time. It's also the first Zelda game I played so there's a bit of nostalgia there.
However, when you think about how they revolutionized 3rd person 3D combat in that game it's amazing. A lot of the things we take for advantage now that are so intuitive came from Ocarina of Time.
OoT is a great game, not quite the masterpiece alot of people make it out to be (e.g. the Water Temple), but damn is it a fine good game; defo top 5 best on the system. Majora's Mask's, yeah, not too sure on that. It's still a good Zelda game, but as a sequel to OoT? No, not so good, average at best.
I played through this game for the first time quite recently, and I was amazed by how sophisticated it was, considering that it was part of the first generation of 3D gaming (which, as far as I'm concerned, reset the industry back to the 2600 age).
And it's silly to not play a game because its graphics aren't on-par with modern game visuals. Shame on you, DarkDragon. I shouldn't have to remind you that you're on a retro game site and that kind of attitude will have you targeted for termination by Mr. Smith's tea-swigging ninja assassins.
I think I actually prefered Majora's Mask to Oot, it had more atmosphere.

Don't know about what others felt of it, but I found it tedious. Took me hours to complete and it's one of the reasons why I haven't replayed the game in a long time.Quote:

Yeah Ocarina of Time is good, but concerning the Majora's Mask comparison, there's no contest, Majora's Mask is superior. Why do I say that? Well for one thing, Ocarina of Time seriously feels incomplete, there's so many things in the game that clearly look like they were intended to be more but weren't. Like for instance the Shieka Stones. To my knowledge they have no use, other than telling you the current time (again, useless in the final version of OoT). You can bomb them, play songs for them to dispense fairies, but that's about it. Also, OoT seriously lacks atmosphere. So much in the game feels bare and empty. Sure that was a good thing in the original LOZ, but not in this game. You know, considering how lacking OoT is, it's an astonishment the game has any cohesiveness after it's N64DD features were stripped away.
As for Majora's Mask, it's effectively the total opposite, including the basic game mechanics. The game is loaded with atmosphere with many characters that now have a purpose and an explanation for being present in the game (thanks to the Bomber's Notebook sidequests). Especially the ever present feeling of doom everyone shares, it's such a nice change from all the happy Zeldas prior. Also, Majora's Mask feels much more whole and cohesive than OoT. There aren't random things in the game that don't do anything or clearly should be more than they are... Not sure how else to explain it, but Majora's Mask overall is a better final product than OoT.
Oh and there's nothing wrong with the 3 day time system. It's nice that a Zelda game is finally challenging! Out of all the Zeldas I've played, Majora's Mask is the most difficult, in a good way. Other Zeldas let Link be lazy and do things at a snail's pace. Majora's Mask wants you to do things in a timely manner... And you know, it's nice to not save Zelda and defeat Ganon(dorf) for once.
Okay I'll get off my soap box now... It's just I am one of the few who understands Majora's Mask and I find it very illogical how so many hate it.
I tried, hard, to like this game. It seemed like it should be cool, everybody said it was cool, but I was just bored stiff every time I tried to play it. So I thought I could at least see the whole game if I nudged my wife into playing it, she quit around the same time I did. No dice.
The real oddity is that I was able to play through Soul Reaver 1 + 2, Legacy of Kain Defiance and Blood Omen 2, in some cases repeatedly. These games basically play identically to Zelda 64, but not as much back tracking.
I didnt say not to play it I said its difficult to look and enjoy at because of how its aged. Im a retro site but a lot of it is talk about 2D not ugly looking, early 3D. I mean its much easier for me to go back and play an 8 bit or 16 bit game than an early N64 game.Quote:
