Here's a video of it, for anyone interested:
And here's a video of the original (non-emulated), if you want to compare:
I really enjoyed playing this the other night with my former college roomate. It seems really well ported, and the share credits between players default setting makes the game much more similar to what it was intended to be than max credits ever would.
None of that matters though, because Gamespot says the game is terrible.
I bought this yesterday after seeing the IGN video review and realizing that this is as close to arcade perfection I'm ever going to get with this game. Although a bit pricey (10.00 USD), it's good to play the game again after all these years. The inclusion of the unlockable Japanese ROM is a nice bonus for hardcore fans of the game, too. :)
I'm satisfied. :)
I'm definitely pleased with it. Sucks that you can't run it at the native resolution (not possible on 360 or PS3 anyways, not their fault) and the scaling/smoothing options aren't as good as the ones on Neo Geo Station games, but stretching it to the maximum size with the border off and smoothing on presents a good enough picture. Sounds emulation seems good, music runs at the right speed unlike MAME.
I wish there were more options to disable the slight GUI changes, like that rotating diamond that pops up when the game is accessing the hard drive. But they're all pretty minor so it's no big deal (and a great improvement over X-Men). And the Japanese ROM supports 4 players here, I don't think there was ever a 4P release of the Japanese game so that's awesome. Unfortunately it looks like the traditional high score entry (with Bartman) is completely gone. Does anyone know if you can still access it?
Did IGN really rip the game because of stuff everyone has known about for 20 years? Honestly? I expected that review to concentrate on what this port is offering, not how repetitive the gameplay is or how shitty the story is. I've known that since it was first released.
And their review system simply does NOT work for re-releases. Sheesh, I guess it's true that you can't spell ignorant without IGN.
I haven't read the review, but IGN gave the XBLA version of The Simpsons an 8.0. It was Gamespot that trashed it.
I'm going to remember that IGN-Ignorant comparison though, that was awesome.
Saw this on GameFAQs, pretty neat:

I just played through it once with Marge on the PS3. I'm rusty, it took 9 credits (or 30+ lives), but it is just like I remember it. What a wonderful port. There are some great unlockables I'm looking forward to getting into as well. After I beat it, I played about half of the JPN version and it is definitely a bit easier. The scoring system is different, and there are these bombs throughout the game which just kill everything on screen. You get your life filled up after each boss too, which someone mentioned earlier in the thread.
I forgot about some of the ridiculous voices in this game. The main characters are all pretty good, but Smithers and Burns sound like evil Japanese villains. It's actually pretty funny. I haven't tried co-op yet because they updated the stupid PSN agreement again and I haven't felt like going through all that text and clicking on I agree for the tenth time. Has anyone here played co-op yet? Are headsets compatible? I'd love to play this one while BSing with some of my buddies.
Based on the graphics and overall presentation alone it's worth about a 6 or 7 out of 10, it has held up well in those regards. I don't think it even sniffs any kind of top beat-em-up list based on gameplay though. It's just one of the arcade staples that everyone seems to have played and has a soft spot for. The reviewer that gave it a 3 was likely just trying to get a rise out of people.
