I don't see the entire computer savvy world being indifferent to the Saturn and Playstation. Abe's Oddysee in particular would lend itself to the jocular touches so popular with ROM hackers alongside any number of gameplay tweaks that would probably appeal even more to the computer savvy, or at least the oldtimers amongst them, for its Prince of Persia similarities.
On the PS end it's even odder hacks/homebrew aren't more prevalent considering the existence of the Yaroze.

This. Hack us a Sonic game, a Phantasy Star, a Kid Chameleon, or if we're strictly talking stuff rebuilt from existing code, another Panzer Dragoon shooter derived from the environments of Saga. Shit, mix it with Nights even. Besides resurrecting a zombie game seems a little redundant.

The lack of 32-bit gen hacks relative to older games is almost certainly due in large part to the complexity of those games (and related large amounts of code and data), making them far more difficult to disassemble to allow for hacks. (and very few games were open source, so disassembly would be the only option)

Streets of Rage Remake V5 on Saturn, do eet.

in like '97 I was arguing with my friend over what is better, Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition on his Saturn, or Destruction Derby 2 on my PS1. I still play DD2 from time to time.

I haven't played Destruction Derby 2 in forever, but I remember being really disappointed with it compared to the original.

Probably because they are kinda different. DD2 is more like stock car racing (that's why it was compared to Daytona by us). Going rampage on track almost always leads to losing a race.

Did you compare the two versions yet?

I found my copy of the PS1 game in my attic today whilst looking through Spectrum games and I've been playing through it.

The games are the same, but the art assets and some of the art design are different, making the courses have a different look to them (some courses have different themes and everything).

And yeah, the Saturn version is considerably better, and when I say considerably, I really mean that, what I've noticed so far.

1# Saturn version has three overlapping layers of parallax in the background, the PS1 game has two

2# Saturn version has transparencies and basic reflection style effects which the PS1 doesn't

3# Saturn version has tons more architecture (building, rocks, overhead bridges etc), and more variety in architecture, often the PS1 version replaces building or rocks with low mounds

4# Saturn version has less pop-up, and fades the building in instead of them just appearing

5# Saturn version scales and rotates a layer of clouds in the sky

6# Saturn version's far background uses copper style colour transitions

I decided to bump this old thread, to see if more people vote.

I had to go with Saturn because I've not really played that many PS1 games at all, and I dont know a whole lot about it's library.

The Saturn on the other hand, I have played a lot. Though I have looked at the PS1's library and there appears to be more games on the Saturn that suit my preferences. (arcade style games)

I just had to go with the Sony Playstation (PSX you might call it). It was the first console I've ever played on and therefore it had an influence on me. And also, it had a lot of great titles I can name off my head like Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken, Spyro the Dragon, etc. I'm just naming the ones with the most nostalgia for me. While I like the Saturn, and in some cases had a better version of the same game on Playstation. I only have 3 Saturn games: NiGHTS into Dreams..., Virtua Fighter 2, and Panzer Dragoon Saga (yes, discs only). My PS1 collection on the other hand is much bigger. I even have an obscure title or two like Alundra.

Now when pitting the PSX and Saturn versions of Rayman together, the winner will be... the Atari Jaguar version

Nope! Anyway, this one is tough. Both were endearing systems for their time, each has good quality's that countered the other in every way.

So as a Saturn fanboy i have to vote....neither! I could vote Saturn as Sega is the company i'm more biased towards when it comes to retro gaming, but that would be lousy.

The PSX also rocked.

Honestly I'd say this forum isn't really that biased when it comes to the Saturn. In fact I'd say there's a pretty high level of Saturn hatred on this forum.

I've owned a Saturn since 1996, but Symphony of The Night is almost enough alone to give the PS1 my vote.

You are aware that Symphony of the Night is also on the Saturn right?

The playstation version is superior though.

It depends on how you define superior though. If you want extra content and gameplay improvements the Saturn version is superior. If you want prettier graphics and better loading then the PS1 version is superior.

It really is a shame how half-assed the Saturn port is, there's really no excuse for it.
