Definately not the NES.
I would go with NES, though the absolute best are probably 16-bit (Secret of Mana, Hard Corps, Putty Squad, Streets of Rage 2, the Genesis version of Lost Vikings, Turtles in Time, Gunstar Heroes, Pocky and Rocky), there's just so much co-op goodness on the NES. I tend to think that the small sprites and zoomed out graphics of 8-bit suit co-op better as well to be honest.
Some of my NES favourites -
Shadow of the Ninja
Contra
Super C
Chip N' Dale 1 & 2
Crisis Force
Life Force
Battletoads (also 16-bit)
Trog
Double Dragon 2
Jackal
Legendary Wings
Monster in My Pocket (not as bad as it sounds, but short)
River City Ransom
SCAT
Snake Rattle N Roll (also 16-bit)
Rush N' Attack
Bubble Bobble
Don Doko Don
Guerilla War
Snow Bros (also on 16-bit)
Turtles III
Twinbee 3
There's loads I'm forgetting :(
Battletoads ? Come on man, everyone knows its a horrible 2 player game and shouldnt even be 2 player.
Very close all round. The Genesis for GA and SoR both 1 and 2 plus a few shooters and World of Illusion; CHC being too tough for most player pairs. SNES has DKC 1 and 2, TMNT in Time, and numerous brawlers of a mediocrity that matches the Genesis's co-op shooters'. The NES has TMNT 2 and 3, the best Double Dragons and Contras, along with Mario 3 (not simul co-op but with each player clearing levels it feels cooperative despite the old arcade battles that arise) and a far better lightgun selection.
So NES.
Easily the Megadrive/Genesis for me. Even just for the Streets Of Rage and Golden Axe games alone.
Genesis for the multitude of beat em ups and sports titles. I can remember playing NHL hockey with 3 other friends using the multi-tap. The SNES and NES both have their shares of co-op games, but I tend to think of the NES and SNES more as one-player machines. NES is most notable for its platformers and the SNES most notable for its RPGs. I'm simplifying of course, but this poll is based on broad generalizations anyway.
The Genesis/Mega Drive, and for many of the same reasons people have already stated it above. Games like Streets or Rage, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, and many more. The Genesis is great for co-op games.
Of course people going to Vote Genesis..
Not necessarily, there was a thread on what console had the "Best RPG's", and SNES had the most votes. There was also a thread on "NES vs SMS", and NES got the most votes, so there's really no bias here. The Genesis had lots of great Co-op games, and my friends and I had a lot of fun playing them back in the day, and we still do now.
yes it does..
Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Golden Axe II, Alien Storm, Two Crude Dudes, Streets of Rage, Streets of Rage 2, Streets of Rage 3, Double Dragon, Double Dragon II, TMNT Hyperstone Heist, The Punisher, Captain America and the Avengers, World of Illusion, Ren 'n Stimpy, Toejam & Earl Panic on Funkatron, Contra Hardcorp, Gunstar Heroes, Rolling Thunder 2, Bonanza Bros., Toejam & Earl, Crack Down and Skeleton Krew, make the Genesis the best coop platform possibly of all time.
Add the 32X and Shadow Squadron is great fun as well. Add the Sega CD and Final Fight CD is a terrific addition.
On the NES I remember playing Life Force, which really has no equal in my opinion. Scramble Spirits on Master System and Vapor Trail on Genesis just don't fill that void for me. TMNT the Arcade game was amusing, and I know people swear by the third game but I was never impressed by it. I guess the Contra games on NES are great, I'm pretty sure Double Dragon II is coop. That is literally all I remember playing at friend's houses back in the day, and all of my friends owned an NES.
The Super Nintendo doesn't even compare to the NES in coop games, much less the Genesis.
Aren't there any Co-Op games of note for the Sega Master System?
This poll lacks 25% of its substance.
There is a huge bias here (Snes won RPG's but no where near as lop-sided as it should have been) (Nes beat SMS once again no where near as lop-sided as it should have been) (The Saturn is beating the PSX right now) The bias on this board from some people is disgusting but it's to be expected.
My favorite poll of all is when Hyperstone Heist beat Turtles in Time (Konami shits out a Genesis port and people vote for it over a game that was better then the arcade game it was based off)
Get off it, the Saturn versus PS1 poll isn't even about which is better, it is about which we prefer. When it comes to coop games the Genesis is easily the top of its generation in quality and quantity. This doesn't mean that the NES and SNES are bad at such games, they just aren't as good at them especially in the beat-em up department.
W/o making the slightest effort I've learnt of another half dozen Super Famicom RPGs since that poll when I already knew a good sixty. Think how big an addition to the Genesis library that six would be. Genesis of course got my vote due to Phantasy Star II but most members are at best indifferent towards it, very few like 3, and those who like 4 almost always like or love Chrono Trigger (which I detest)...So it appears Genesis won that poll by virtue of stuff like Shining in the Darkness and Sorcerer's Kingdom. SNES has no answer to the first Shining Force but to the slightly generic and markedly kiddier 2 it has several along with much more involved tactics games. To be sure some homebrew fever was also in evidence with Pier Solar tipping the scales.
And people want the SMS in the poll? So the other three consoles have something to stand on?
^ Likewise. Though Quartet is awesome 2-player, and the other games I mentioned are good, I don't think it can really stand on its own against the NES and Genesis. It might be able to hold its own against the SNES and TG16 maybe.
I am voting for the Genesis here, and honestly half of the reason for that is simply that I haven't played a ton of SNES or NES co op games.
I've had a ton of fun with the Genesis co op titles, Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage, Contra Hardcorps (I still haven't beat this yet).
Whilst I disagree with a lot of the stuff regarding SMS written in this thread (for one thing, there's certainly no problem with SMS bias on Sega-16, Mega Drive and Saturn get by far the most, whilst Dreamcast and SMS tend to have to fend for themselves)
SMS does have a weak library for multiplayer in general, and co-op wise I can only think of -
Time Soldiers
Gauntlet
Ashura
Gain Ground
Bubble Bobble
Battlemaniacs
And on top of that a lot of those games have superior versions elsewhere anyway.
PC-Engine and SNES are waay better for co-op
This is the equivalent of taking a survey of 100 strangers and then throwing the results away because you don't agree with them. :S
I mean really man, we're not fixing the polls here or anything, and you're on a Sega board. There's definitely going to be some bias, but we don't ALWAYS vote in favor of SEGA consoles.
That being said I'm giving this one to the NES:
River City Ransom
Contra
Super C
TMNT II
TMNT III: The Manhattan Project
Super Dodge Ball
Double Dragon
Jackal
Genesis and SNES have some awesome co-op beam-em-ups as well! TMNT IV and Hyperstone Heist, Sunset Riders, and more that at the moment I can't think of.
Bomberman series (you can do 2 player V 2 CPU)
Dragon Sabre
Aeroblasters
Detana Twinbee
Salamander
Don Doko Don
Parasol Stars
Pop N' Magic
Cadash
Chiki Chiki Boys
Pang
River City Ransom
Monster Lair (hey, its alright)
I think Bonanza Bros may have been 2-player on PC-Engine (wasn't on SMS IIRC)
Pretty sure the PC-Engine version of Hellfire is 2-player
There was also a shmup where you could turn into a giant insect or something.
Give me time and I'll remember some others, I'm also more experienced with SMS than PC-Engine.
I voted Genesis. I'm a huge fan of Golden Axe and several other games mentioned already.
As for the SMS, I wouldn't rank it as high as the systems in this poll but it had a few significant co-op moments. The thread refers to "better", not "highest number of good games" so I don't think someone would be crazy to vote for it even though it wouldn't be my choice.
- Bubble Bobble on SMS is excellent. It's a special edition with double as many levels as the arcade and password save. And it's much better for gameplay than other home ports.
- Gangster Town is arguably the best home gun game for co-op prior to Virtua Cop.
- Fantasy Zone: The Maze is the best co-op maze chase game on the classic systems. It sadly gets ignored because it's a spin off and few gamers born after the mid '70s care about the genre.
I love Quartet and Time Soldiers as well. Global Defense has co-op, too, although I think you had to do a code to activate it.
All 3 consoles have more then their fair share of great co-op games. I always get depressed thinking of games that would have been great with co-op "Basically any arcade port that omitted the 2P option" I vote Nes on effort alone, having games with huge amounts of slowdown and flicker while still having a 2P option makes me proud. FU Mighty Final Fight!
I will say I liked when Sonic 2 let me be the Kamikaze "boss killer" Tails (people underrate the fun to be had playing as Tails in 2P)
I didn't realize that Fantasy Zone: The Maze was 2-player coop that is awesome! Bubble Bobble is great on the Master System to be sure. I haven't ever played Gangster Town 2-player, I don't think I even know it was 2-player.
I have never seen River City Ransom, or whatever it is called in Japan on the PCE, played 2-player. I just assumed it was single player like DJ Boy.
Aero Blaster might have been what I was thinking about when I said Vapor Trail earlier. I hear it is pretty good on both platforms.
That sounds right about co-op in Hellfire; I think so for Truxton too (both arcade holdovers).
NES probably has another half dozen co-op shmups but I wasn't in to those till recently so it rests on somebody else to dig up.
The SMS's one joker card would be its lightgun support. Of course there are Golden Axe (surely it's not 1P) and the Brazilian Battletoads in Battlemaniacs but those are inferior versions.
--Damn, I always forget Sunset Riders, that makes the SNES a whole lot stronger. And is Area 888 (UN Squadron) co-op?
Alien Syndrome on NES is pretty fun co-op as well.
I was going to ask about UN Squadron too, I don't know that it is 2-player. -edit- I forgot that I had it in box, there is no mention of 2-players on the box and all of the screenshots are of a single player.
Golden Axe on Master System is 1-player and only has Axe Battler as a playable character. I only like it because the level design is closer to the Arcade game.
I remember now, it was called Psychic Storm, and yeah, not very memorable (the 2-player option was the best thing about it), not that it was a bad game or anything, but one of the bog standard shmups where you just feel deja vu then entire time you're playing it. Still, it was better than Scramble Spirits....
I also missed off Ai Cho Aniki
EDIT: SMS Golden Axe and SNES UN Squadron are both single player only
As It's coop, I had to give it to the NES hands down, it has some of the best coop games ever made(still among the best out there even today), but if it was 2 player in general, It's more or less a tie between the Genny, and SNES, so it would be really hard to choose(I would have to see a complete list of the 2 player games in each library, that's how close it would be).
