I can't seem to get into the SNES

I’m not trying to troll. Promise.

I really love the NES and Genesis.

There are only a handful of games I enjoy on the SNES. They’re basically the Mario Titles + Donkey Kong Country.

I was thinking I was too hard on the SNES because it’s ugly/purple – so I bought a Super Famicom. I like it a lot better than the SNES, but it doesn’t exactly change up the library.

Every SNES game I play feels too slow paced. The sprites also seem way too big and clunky.

Here’s the thing. Super Mario World is probably my favorite game in existence. There’s just not much else that does it for me like it does.

I have a PowerPak (flash cart). I have a GoodSNES set and access to any game. Recommend me a few titles.

I like platformers, brawlers (Final Fight) and shmups.

I HATE RPGs and sports games.

Please help. Otherwise my SNES/Super Famicom may never receive any love.

There are some good platformers out here, but the only one that comes to mind is "Umihara Kawase", which was only released in Japan, and commands $100 or more on eBay.

It's too bad you hate RPG's, as that's the SNES's strong point. I'm sure someone will recommend some good SNES platformers for you.

Super Double Dragon is a must, though it is slow paced and has slowdown its gameplay is superb. Also try Cybernator (Assault Suits Valken). Demon's Crest is great but slow paced as well. Act Raiser has always held my interest even though it is insanely short and easy.

Apart from those, the rest of these SNES games have been recommended for specific reasons.

Thats funny because I cant seem to get into the SMS.

Personally, I don't have the same affinity for the SNES as I do some of my other systems, but here are the games that I've found worthwhile to own.

Mega Man X is one of my favoritest games ever. Whenever someone complains about SNES games having shitty music or being too slow, I direct them towards this fantastic game.

On the subject of Mega Man X's mastery of the SNES, it begs the question... What would the game be like, had it been ported to the Genesis with the same kind of loving care that Rocket Knight Adventures received?

Will Return of Double Dragon play on the Super Everdrive, or is there a patch to make it play, on a US SNES? Also, they didn't take out the counter-grab moves did they? That is what makes Super Double Dragon so great in the first place.

I prefer Wayne's World and Home Improvement.

No patch necessary, you just need the Japanese rom. The game is 100% English, if I remember correctly.

I'm kind've confused, normally after a statement like that, I could just write you off as a Sega fanboy/troll, and move on, but yet you claim to love the NES.


Platformers out side of 1st party: Demon's Crest(Hybrid between Platformer, and Adventure), It's godly(plus it should beable to be had cheap), Actraiser 1 is amazing(Hybrid between Platformer, and a sim/adventure game), part 2 while not as good as part 1(because that's like a pure platformer) is a very good game, for what it is. Then you have the port of Prince of Persia(I found it hard to get use to the controls since I grew up on the 2gs, and Macantosh versions, but if you never played the computer versions before, that shouldn't be an issue), which is an awesome classic platformer(requires both speed, and fast thinking). Lets not forget, you also have Super Castlevania 4 as well

There are more, but for some reason I can recall their actual names.

Beat'm ups: OMG you should be slapped, because while there Isn't alot, the SNES has among the best out of the entire genre, not even just for the generatiom. It has a "almost" perfect port of the TMNT arcade game which is like the holy grail of the genre(everyone knows about this game, so I find it hard to believe any fan of the genre would miss it), and then there is(forgot the exact name) Super Battletoads(or whatnot). There's a couple more, but those are must haves.

SNES games slow paced... maybe compared to the Sonic games of the time, which had only 1-3 sprites on the screen at a time, and is basically a speed to the end fest, with almost nothing in the way to slow you down, so sorry I don't understand that complaint.

Shooters: You have some amazing ones on the SNES as well(a hell of a lot more if you have a super famicom I'm sure, but either way there are awesome games). We have the token Gradius game(complaints about situational slowdown in a Gradius game aren't valid, since no system back then could handle a Gradius game to beginwith, and besides It's not gamebreaking bad anyway, so every system has issues running it), Star Fox is amazing, and you have your token Contra game(ok, It's a run'n gun, but it should count).


PS. It's a crying shame you don't like RPGs, the SNES has a bunch of the best RPGs ever made, and they offer more gameplay then other genre's as well, so you're missing out big time.

Try Hagane, Parodius Da!, Aladdin, Adventures of Batman and Robin, Macross, Cybernator, Gun Hazard, or Super Turrican 2.

I'm playing on this guy on a nice CRT via a SCART to component converter. You don't have to be concerned with the cost (or region) of a game. I can throw anything on here. The games I like I generally end up purchasing.

Action = Duck Dodgers, Operation Logic Bomb, Ignition Factor, Soul Blazer Skyblazer (the former's a decent ARPG if you like that genre), Contra III, Sunset Riders, Metal Warriors, Alcahest (Action RPG), B.O.B. (superior version), Earthworm Jim 2 (superior version), Pitfall Mayan Adventure (superior to Genesis and 32X but not CD version).

That's it, I don't know this system well.

ADD = Equinox (ARPGish), Super Smash TV (considered superior for graphical reasons), Septentrion (aka SOS), F Zero, The Firemen, Time Slip (run n gun I've never got round to trying; aren't many of these so give it a look), Popful Mail, Jelly Boy (djshok advocates the Genesis prototype) I believe was finished on this system, Imperium (a shmup that should be worth trying and isn't well known), Xardion (mech game), Out of this World (superior version), Psycho Dream (platformer of unmistakable Valis design with very impressive boss art), Phantom 2040 (I should just have made a category for superior versions), Super HQ (the old Taito game), Syvalion (strange old Taito shooter), Troddlers (puzzle platformer whose name I couldn't retrieve first time round), The Untouchables.

Zelda and Umihara Kawase need to be seconded.

How has no one mentioned Kirby's Super Star yet?

I just remembered another very good platformer, Magic Sword(It's a very good port of a pretty iconic arcade game).

The Japanese and US versions of Double Dragon are the same game, but the US version was released before it was really finished. The Japanese version has numerous tweaks, more options, and an actual real Double Dragon last stage. The US version just ends. Neither version has a real ending, unfortunately.

I have to say, I could never get into Mega Man X, it feels really stiff to me.

Gradius III is an excellent shmup for the SNES, though the hardware makes the game chug along at times, but it's still quite fun and frantic!

Gradius III is not what I would call frantic; rare is the moment when the game seems to be running at full speed. :p I would suggest Gradius III & IV for PS2 instead (along with Gradius Deluxe Pack for Saturn, and Gradius V).

Since you've got a flashcart try Sutte Hakkun, a weird hybrid platformer/puzzler.

It takes a little while to get used to the controls since most of the tutorials are in Japanese but its as excellent as it is excruciating in equal measures. Those brain teasers that keep you playing.
