There are plenty of quality games with dubious main characters; this poll focuses on those I find especially namby.
The definition 'great' is taken from general opinion outside Sega-16 and doesn't reflect my own feelings towards these games. Arguing it isn't the point here.
So, in short, which of these characters' appearance and personality most put you off his otherwise great game(s)?
Gex.
Rayman.
Super Magnetic Neo.
Ristar.
Dixie Kong. (Just this one Kong to keep things fair).
Kirby.
Flink.
Those aren't even close to the worst :p.
Alex Kidd, Kid Chaos, Baby Mario, The guy from Xyphoe's Fantasy, Asha, The guy from Legendary Axe 2, Megaman (on the game box), Willow, etc...
Rayman, Ristar and Kirby are all cool in their own ways. Flink sucks... but my choice goes to Dixie Kong, they got it right with Diddy.
I voted Super Magnetic Neo. I mean, just look at him! He looks like a crossbreed between a baby and a toilet seat!
@ Kamahl = While I agree with some of your "other worst" characters, I have to disagree with you on Alex Kidd, as I thought he was pretty cool.
He's better than the others but I still find him pretty lame. He may not be as bad as the others but at the same time he's much more disappointing since he was the sega "mascot" at the time.Quote:

I like Kirby and Ristar! Maybe they're not "cool," exactly, but that's part of their charm.
Ristar is okay, but if Sega was smart they would've just made the game into a Sonic spinoff.

I can understand why Alex Kidd isn't here though, because neither him nor his games are great.

Still many/most of the characters I mentioned are in popular games.
Monty Mole was actually a very popular character in Britain during the 80s, I've never been a huge fan, but I think some of his games are fairly playable for their times, and the character design itself I find to be alright (pre impossamole) that Impossamole game was very ill recieved here to say the least, people really did not like the change of style at all.Quote:

Anyway, speaking of polls, I picked Gex, just for the "snappy" Poochie commentary.
Somebody mentioned Sparkster but aside from it being a bit weird that he's a possum I think he was a pretty good character.

Definitely going with Ristar out of this list, mostly because I played Super Magnetic Neo to comment on whether it's a great game or not. Dixie Kong came close, tho. Even worse was that dopey half-retarded little brother of hers from the 3rd game. DKC2 and 3 would have been much better had they kept Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong as the main characters.
Dixie Kong is the oddball in this poll. Everyone else is a lead character in their respective franchise.
Other than that, every single one of those characters is the opposite of lame. They're all cool in my eyes.
Bubsy; lame character in a decent game (excluding Bubsy 3D, that just plain sucked).

The older I get the more I realise that Dizzy's games are actually awesome (well Fantasy World, Magicland, and Prince of the yolkfolk are), the games are just imaginative and likeable, the platforming can be tough but the layouts can be pretty cool and the games aren't really that long when you've solved the puzzles.
To be honest I think I actually like Fantasy World better than virtually all other adventure games of the entire 8-bit era, it just has a lot more personality.
Treasure Island, Spellbound, Crystal Kingdom, and Fantastic Dizzy are all pretty much trash though (well, maybe Fantastic isn't "trash" but I certanly don't find it very enjoyable to play), Treasure Island doesn't give you enough lives, the inventory system sucks, and there are instant death memory tests just about everywhere. Spellbound sucks because it added a crappy take-damage-when-you-fall "feature", and its design is confused and too long. Fantastic Dizzy sucks because its tedious as crap, all the elements are recycled, and its stupidly long.

I used to own a gold colored Codemasters NES cart, which had four games on it. The four games were "F-16 Renegade", "Stunt Buggies", "C.J's Elephant Antics", and "Go Dizzy, Go!". The cartridge was called "Quattro Arcade". I wish I still had it.
