Best Last Ninja Game

What is your favourite Last Ninja game?

* If you're picking a "Remix", then choose the game number it's a remix of, and if you choose the NES game, remember that's it's LN2 despite the name. There wouldn't have been room in the poll to separate every version of the games.

For me it's a tough call between 1 and 2 (C64 versions, the ports/remakes always seem off to me). I chose part 1 because of the setting and less floaty jumping. The rock jumping parts are far more annoying than any platforming in the second game, though.

This is one of the those franchises where I rarely find fans that aren't from the UK. If you haven't played them, you missed out on some of the best action-adventure gaming of the 1980s. Newcomers (especially console-only gamers) will probably find the games highly difficult with a lot of trial and error but I think they're worth sticking with despite the flaws. This can be a general discussion thread for the series as well.

I liked 2 the best, it had the most atmosphere and the music was awesome.

I think the puzzles are a little bit obtuse in them all though to be honest, I guess I wasn't in the age bracket it was aimed for (I think I was maybe around 10), but my dad and elder brother helped a lot, and between the three of us we still could never get off the 1st stage even after playing it for years.

Eventually, about 7 or 8 years ago I found from a guide that I was supposed to equip the wooden stick and nudge the boat so that it travelled down the river and allowed you to cross on another screen, oh well :(

If I have heard about these games before I have forgotten them. Should I know what platforms they were popular on? Should I know they were popular at all? At a glance they look like Kings Quest, which seems cool to me.

They're most associated with the C64, and they were more popular in the UK, but they were around in the US too, at least the first two. I never saw the third one anywhere.

I never saw it on shelves but it seems there was an NTSC version of Last Ninja 3 for the CD32. Since that system was delayed in the US due to legal reasons, and Commodore died soon afterwards, my guess is there were a small number of them released in Canada and possibly a few US stores that "imported" it.

This thread reminds me there is a wealth of libraries I've yet to tap into. And here I was just concentrating on the PS3 and the 360.

That's really strange, of the four platforms it was released for, CD32 would seem the least likely.

Activision probably didn't make enough money to care about releasing 3 here but Commodore probably wanted as many games as possible available for their new machine.

Too bad they barely made the actual console available. :p

I haven't played any. Judging by those screen shots, it looks like a traditional PC styled adventure game, am I right? Sigh I love adventure games, how did I miss an entire series.

I only played 2, so I went that.The music in that game is remarkable.

I played 2, but I seem to have real trouble actually doing anything, bad control scheme or is it just me?

I had an C64 given to me a few years (gone now, lost moving houses) with a ton of games, which included Last Ninja 1-3. None of the tapes would work, so I was never able to play any of them.

TBH I really don't like the game very much, the screen redraw and the awkward controls get annoying fast.

Tried them a longtime ago with an emulator and legal rom bundle free with retro gamer years ago. Seemed interesting enough, might have to see if I have it stashed away anywhere still...
