I can't vote, but if I could, I'm not sure what I'd vote for on this part. I'm not a big fan of cyberpunk, but I think that historical or fantasy would be nice if it was done right.

I know what "some" means, smartass. I was just unsure where you got that impression. I read the same stuff you did. It doesn't matter now, at any rate.
Right now I'm wondering if this is going to be a beat-em-up with RPG elements (since that won the secondary poll) and if so, how they'll be implemented.
Exactly how I feel. We are gonna end up with some nasty looking industrial style game with weird ass art design if we choose Cyber-punk.
djshok- yes we have had Streets of Rage and the awesome remake (but nothing "new" in what 20 yrs) I know remake came out recently but it was like an HD remake with some <-- keyword some original material. A ground up new 80/90's style game I really think greatness can be achieved taking the best of the FF/SOR/DD formula and modernizing it.
Yes I realize you already cast your vote so this is a moot point.
What don't you like about the style? As djshok said it's not too far removed from anything pop in the `80s. It won't look warm and mellow like SoR but then SoR shouldn't be imitated closely. And part of the cyberpunk effect is to shock the viewer through contrasting normality with the cyber elements, so there'd have to be some basis in normality for it to work, which the RPG elements will cement. Take it over the top and it becomes flat out scifi, which being its own option I think there's less danger of muddling in. And to that contrast's end I suspect at least half the playable characters (and hopefully half the enemies) will be fairly normal, ie w/o tubes and gadgets sprouting from their heads. My only concerns would be that they might still overdo it--just as I would nominate scifi for the backgrounds and atmosphere but wouldn't want the enemy to be solely composed of aliens and monsters--and that the industrial element show up well as the sort of graphics it requires are not the Genny's strength (though WM can just lift sprites from Metropolis Zone *wink*).
Actually I feel some of the foes from SoR already looked cyberpunk, ie Galsia and the whip chicks.
If "Cyberpunk" was to be interpreted like ROBO ARMY that would be incredibly boring indeed!
How about something that hasn't been done yet ?
- Keep the Apocalypse theme and
let it happen in a Futuristic Sci-Fi Fantasy World - with focus on the futuristic Sci-Fi setting so that this once was a really advanced society before the war
the oppressor gotta be a foreign Nazi super power, 1941 steampunk style, kinda like Metal Slug
unlike Metal Slug however, the enemies you encounter in the game should not be Nazis but of a huge variety of different punks, monsters, mutants, Nazi-Zombies
this would be similar to Streets of Rage - because in SOR *very few* enemies look like Mr.X or robots or whatever. - This is the apocalypse you don't always run into an organized Nazi army!, you run into random punks, monsters, mutants, zombies - survivors of the apocalypse.
And even if this is post-apocalypse there still gotta be parts of your world that are left mostly intact. So even if most infrastructure is lost I still wanna see a scenery with lots of futuristic buildings, and parks with lush green vegetation and blue skies.
a pisstake one
i want it to have ponies,
and fluffy clouds,
and rabbit mechs,
with a sci-fi garden setting.
and a schmup bonus stage!

I won't play it unless there are Nazis, Terrorists, and Zombies.
