Gotta be honest I would rather historical then cyber-punk I have $500 bomb ready to drop if cyber-punk takes the lead again. If anyone wants to band together and get 80/90's decadence in 1st I would be willing to go higher but I need help obviously.
Man this is just getting ridiculous, good thing I'm sitting on the sidelines for this. As I figured this whole investment thing will take care of itself just fine (WM will do great but the game's quality will likely crash and burn in the end).
Historical on one hand has a definite lame-o factor to it (look at World Heroes, but that game has a serious charm of cheese factor), but given how open historic truly is, there could be potential here. If WM's definition of "historical in this case" is real documented records of humanity's past, then there's a bit of limitation, but if it's historical in a loose sense of the term, we could have something awesome. Just think of all the themes that stem from (loose) history:
• Pirates
• Ninjas
• Egyptian
• Pre-Historic (lol)
• Decades of the 1800s and 1900s
Just a few examples.
I'm hoping to lighten the spirits of the Cyber Punk camp if Historical wins out. But I feel WM's definition on "historical" will be much more strict and based on real people and settings.
I think historical gives tons of options for the game (I mean it doesn't even have to be limited to a certain time it can include a bunch).
Steampunk would be really cool, if that fell into WM view of "historical". Who knows how strict they are about this. Or what historical time period they'd base this on. I could see there being some cool historical periods, like a Victorian era brawler, or th 1920's with gangsters and stuff, kinda like Dick Tracy, or hell even the 80's/90's thing, that's history too. Hopefully it won't be anything lame like feudal Japan, or another King Arthur thing :yuck:
Still though, cyberpunk is only 2% behind historical. I'm hoping we'll be able to pump it back up and win. I just tossed some cash into it and it helped a bit. I'm hoping really hard that the cyberpunk team can get it together on this.
If it involved time travel or something like that, that would be kinda cool.
You all are killing me seriously. Everything that has ever happened is encompassed in history, that includes anything cool. What is this, are we that far down the road in this dark age?
Futuristic stuff isn't history. And strictly speaking neither is anything fictional. Again, depends on how strict they wanna be about it.
Well yeah, but on the Genesis, they aren't even going to come close to simulating real fighting mechanics, so I would assume artistic license with any "historic" theme. Really that term is redundant in the poll. If they mean pop-culture documentary setting then they should say that. I know of some completely awesome real history scenarios that could use a good beat-em up.
I'm certainly not accusing Watermelon of doing this, but I find the idea of them raising unpopular categories in order to get people to freak out and spend money in order to "right this wrong" quite amusing.
I've got to level with you guys. At this stage of the game, I don't think there is a need to fret. I think the vast majority of the forum had a preference for a beat'em up. And luckily, the majority won. There is a game being produced for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. If I may take the time to remind everyone, the biggest concern was what platform the game was going to be released on. Imagine, the vote had swung to another popular console? I think alot of us would be quite sad to hear that the game was not going to be released on the SEGA console.
In my personal opinion, the setting is of little concern to me at this point: Whether the setting is historical or 80/90's decadence or Medieval/Fantasy or Post-apocalyptic/Cyber-punk. The game is going to be released on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. I would like to suggest to everyone to keep things in perspective. Remember, there are two other projects in the works and you really should save your funds for those releases. If the setting is something that you really feel so strong about, then go ahead and invest in this particular topic. But do so after giving it much thought. Don't be so reactionary. After all, we are all after the same thing: A good game that will offer our money's worth.
If I may take the liberty to express my thoughts and concerns at this moment in time. The only concern I have concerns me is whether a quality product can be produced within the stipulated deadline: Namely, July 16, 2013. As mentioned before, I would rather a slight delay in terms of the game's release date. In this way the developer can ensure that (1.) a quality product is released and (2.) a bit of quality assurance is implemented to address any notable bugs or glitches in the game.
There is one issue that I have been thinking about: the genre. Producing a beat 'em up is a little more complex than producing an RPG. One, the developer has to ensure that the combo system is solid. Second, the developer has to ensure that there is no issue with respect to the hit detection. Third, the developer has to account for all types of interactions within a given environment. Fourth, a good game developer has to ensure that the game artists are up to task in designing a great background/environment but more importantly that the sprite animation is appealing. I am not worried about the former as I beleive that WM has demonstrated that they do have the skillset to produce detailed and colorful environments that are appealing. My concern is about the aforementioned issues.
A number of you have mentioned some great ideas with respect to the move options and combo system(s). I am sure that members of the Watermelon team are reading this thread as we speak. It's a good way for them to gauge people's perception on the project: you can read about people's concerns and ideas. Afterall, the game is being developed for us.
I have an idea with respect to how to balance the characters but I'll save that idea for another day. I think I've said my peace. I'll simply let you guys ponder on what I have written thus far. Cheers!
Agostinhobaroners, you make a good point. Something that I never considered. Creatinging the right sound effects land music composition will definitely take quite some time. As the Streets of Rage series (and to a lesser extent Golden Axe) has shown, music and sound effects can make or break a game.
I've got no problem with a Historical setting, it sounds cool. I already voted for Scifi/futuristic anyway.
Honestly, there is so much negativity in this thread. I put my money down to try and get platformer to win and it lost, and you don't see me whining.
I say the game is already half made and your votes wont change anything , but that just the conspiracist in me talking
