PS1 car combat games! Twisted Metal / Vigilante 8 / Rogue Trip
Who else loved them on PS1? Twisted Metal 2 is probably my favorite out of all the car combat games ever largely due to my love for it's colorful cast of characters. After it TM series went really downhill.
V8 and 2nd Offence are great too. The only problem with them is that they've tried to make more realistic car controls which's a bad thing for a car deathmatch.
Rogue Trip is usually forgotten for some reason, but it's made by the same folks who developed TM and TM2 and is just as fun.
Also, for nostalgia's sake:

I played so much Twisted Metal 2 two-player deathmatch. It was one of the best multiplayer games of that gen. Vigilante 8 had nice graphics but it felt like something was lacking. I never played much of Rogue Trip but it seemed quite good.

Red Asphalt's (R&RR2) my favourite. Although it isn't as good as the first, it does have some great music:

Weren't the PS1 versions of the vigilante 8 games the weakest versions? I'm sure I remember someone saying the N64 and Dreamcast games controlled better or something, not sure.
Maybe I'll pick them up sometime soon.

Twisted Metal 1 and 3 were meh for me, Twisted Metal 2 was cool for a while but I got tired of it. I tried to get into Vigilante 8 Second Offense on Dreamcast but it just didn't seem to have whatever hooked me on Twisted Metal 2. San Francisco Rush 2049 on Dreamcast had a battle mode that totally brought that back for me though.

Hell yes, Twisted Metal 2 is the best in the series. TM4 wasn't so bad, though (plus it was the first one I've ever played, so it does kind of have some nostalgic value to it)
The Vigilante 8 games weren't so bad either, but I think that the original's much better. Plus they had some awesome soundtracks.
Rogue Trip is one hell of an underrated game, plus the concept's amazing. It's kinda like Crazy Taxi mixed with a car combat game, and it's loads of fun, plus it had some goofy, rather unique characters and vehicles (come on, what other car combat game has a killer nun and an Oscar Mayer truck armed with machineguns? None)
And sorta related, there also was Critical Depth, a submarine combat game also by the developers of the original Twisted Metal games. It wasn't that good.

Twisted Metal 1 and 2 were awesome. Personally I have the most feeling for TM1 because I really liked its dark atmosphere. TM2 is more refined and has better gameplay, but is a bit more comical than TM1 was. I've never played TM's 3 or 4, or any other PS1 car combat game for that matter, and it'll probably stay that way. Twisted Metal Black for the PS2 was fantastic too, really capturing the feel of the first TM games while smoothing out all the rough edges, and even turning up the darkness a few more notches.
It's strange that the series never took off as much in Europe as it did in the US. With TM Black I can understand, as the PAL version of that was censored into oblivion, but none of the other games did particularly well here either. Even now, the new Twisted Metal is mostly turning heads in America. Europe isn't paying much attention.

Ive played all Twisted metal games on PS1, Vigilante and Rogue Trip.
The most I played was Rogue Trip. It's actually a badass game. Great levels, funny story and the co-op mode is great.
Bosses are cool, and the last boss is pretty hard.

Rush 2049 was amazing. I remember not being 'allowed' to play Twisted Metal 2 back in the day.

I never really liked the Twisted Metal games. From what I remember of the ones I played (I honestly don't remember which ones), they seemed to use very dark colors which made it look bland and hard to see. I also didn't like the style of it either, it just seemed to be trying to hard to be something cool and mature from what I remember.
I did however love Rush 2049 on the N64.

Does "BattleTanx" count? Cool little game, aload of fun in multiplayer.
