Ghosts 'n Goblins series thread.

Ah yes, the Ghosts 'n Goblins series. Capcom created these games to be very challenging while still being fun (for the most part, anyway.) Here are just a few questions below if you want to answer them (obviously you don't have to, but still.)


1. Which game is your favorite in the series and which is your least favorite and why?

2. What is your favorite and least favorite weapon to use? (Doesn't have to be your favorite or least favorite weapon in the whole series, you can be game specific if you want to.)

3. Who is the coolest boss character in the entire series?

4. Who is the most difficult boss for you to defeat?

5. What do you think of the magician character/animal transformations? Which is your favorite one?

6. Out of all the games in the entire franchise, which do you believe is the most difficult to beat?

7. Between Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom, which game is better and why?

1# Probably Ghouls N' Ghosts as the multi-directional firing helps to offset the way you have to commit to jumps (IE if you're landing on an enemy you can fire down) I also tend to like the freedom of multi-directional firing as a gameplay element anyway. Least favourite out of the ones I played was the original, not because its bad, just because I had to pick one and the 16-bit games both seem fairer and have interesting gameplay features (multi-firing, and double jump)

2# I think maybe the small daggers just because they're accurate and fast, my least favourite is the flame weapon which is an utter POS which virtually always gets me killed and results in a restart

3# Dunno, probably Firebrand I guess

4# None of them really seemed that hard as far as I can remember, you need to just practice them, probably one of the final bosses I'd guess.

5# They're a little annoying, but add some nice humour to the game.

6# Out of the ones I've played definitely the first one, I've completed Ghould N' Ghosts and Super Ghouls N' Ghosts in one sitting before, whilst I struggle to get over half way through Ghosts N' Goblins even though I've had it the longest.

7# I already gave my reasons for prefering GNG over Super, they're both excellent games, and I think Super has the graphics and the atmosphere, but I just enjoy the multi-directional firing more than the double jump, GnG is more focussed on quick action shooting whilst Super is more focussed on precise jumping.

My favourite would have to be the Master System one because of how you can upgrade the armour/magic etc.

Daggers best, axe since it fires slightly upwards (a pain on the downward slope)

I haven't played the others through. I have only completed SMS GnG and MD GnG. I do have GnGoblins in NES and the Compilations on PSP/XBOX

Ghouls N' Ghosts on Genesis reigns supreme.

Are we counting Demon's Crest in this? Because my vote goes to that.

Also, are we counting Maximo as well?

I've played every game in this series, including both Demon games and the maximo games. Awesome series.

1. Ghouls N Ghosts on Genesis is pretty much the only game in the series that I like. I couldn't stand Super Ghouls N Ghosts or Maximo, they're just too slow. Ghouls N Ghosts came out at the right time and had the perfect mix of gameplay quality, level design, sound effects and music.

2. My favorite weapon is the dagger with rapid fire on. My least favorite is probably the disc or the axe.

3. The Bee boss before Loki in GnG is probably the coolest boss next to the Hell Hound in Level 2 of the same, that thing is freaky.

4. None seem more or less difficult. I guess the cloud eyeball boss in GnG is more difficult because of the jumps you have to make while anticipating its attacks. I think Ghosts N Goblins probably takes the cake for difficult bosses.

5. Meaningless fluff, I tend to just anticipate its appearance and blast it before it can get a shot off. Getting transformed hurts the gameplay, so I don't like it.

6. Probably Ghosts N Goblins, that game is insane. Super Ghouls N Ghosts could be second because of the absurd level designs around pixel perfect jumps.

7. Ghouls N Ghosts is better for me because it is faster and doesn't have as many cheap shots and piss poor jumps to amp up the difficulty. Also, throwing up and down is really a must, especially while jumping.

1. + = Ghosts n Goblins, I just can't stand the look of all the other games save the Maximos whereof this is the first I've heard; Demon's Crest has cool looking enemies but the gargoyle main character is an eyesore. - = Super Ghouls n Ghosts: the worst visual design, just a very gaudy game in the worst 16 bit tradition.

2. + = the dagger cz it's fastest. - = the fireball since it's hard to aim and lags whilst aflame on the ground.

3. Really couldn't say. My guess is Demon's Crest has the lion's share here.

4. "". Presumably the ultimate of Ghosts n Goblins.

5. Another aggravation. Though nothing, nothing whatsoever, is as infuriating as Arthur's arthritis. I swear every time that feckless git kneels when I press left or right I want to dash the controller at the wall--though it's entirely the game's fault.

6. What sheath said.

7. Ghouls n Ghosts by a hair. It looks nearly as awful as Super GnG and Thenewguy's points hold as well but I don't tend to like firing compasswise whilst making tricky jumps. So since neither is sensorily pleasant I'll opt for the easier.

1) Ghouls N Ghosts - a step up in graphics, challenge toned down a little, outstanding soundtrack and quite a colorful game.
2) Favorite - dagger or crossbow (in Super GnG), one because it's quick, the other because it shoots homing arrows with green armor.
3) Sardius/Samael (SGnG), though he's big and lumbers around, you have to ride platforms just to reach his weak spot, his head.
4) Beelzebub the swarm of hornets in stage 5 of Ghouls, you can control the swarm with your weapon as they fly over, but if you don't shoot quick enough, you're screwed.
5) hate em, they change you into something quite useless, leaving you quite vulnerable. Like the girl form in SGnG.
6) The original plain and simple.
7) I like both on both platforms, only knock against SGnG is it's slower speed overall.

The main question is, do people like the PSP Ghosts N Goblins, or the Wonderswan Ghouls N Ghosts (and who's heard of and played it).

i have both. ultimate ghouls n ghosts (the psp version, not the iphone version) is miles better. the wonderswan version, which is not a port of any game but rather an original entry loosely based off the original ghosts n goblins, feels antiquated compared to ultimate.

Me too, also for the controls. I have always disliked this series primarily due to the janky controls, which the SMS game does not retain.

This. I find Super Ghouls N' Ghosts to be grossly overrated - screw the double-jump, they should of retained vertical firing.

Since Maximo and Demon's Crest are both spin-off titles in the Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise, the answer to both of your questions is yes.

1. Ghouls 'n Ghosts is my favorite because the difficulty, while still very tough, seems to be the most balanced out of any of the games in the series I've played. My least favorite is Ghosts 'n Goblins because it doesn't show any mercy and the controls feel stiff compared to later games.

2. My favorite weapon in the whole series is the dagger, while my least favorite is the fireball.

3. Hydra from Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

4. Cockatrice from Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

5. I found them to be annoying but hilarious at the same time. My favorite is the duck from Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

6. Ghosts 'n Goblins.

7. Even though I enjoy both games, I prefer Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Sega Mega Drive over Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on SNES. The level design is better in my opinion and I'd much rather have the ability to throw weapons in four directions over a double jump.
