American Cultural Fetish
I, for one, cannot get into American-centric gaming fare, especially pseudo Comic book stuff that comes from the near side of the Pacific ocean. I have to say that some game systems have seemed to be too "American" to me over the years, and that I was somewhat turned off by these. The whole Spiderman and Xmen series never struck a chord with me as I just could not get into the American fascination with mutants and superheros. Also, I don't get the whole gigantic breasts in chain metal and half naked warriors, or the myriad of video games that copy that style.
Having said that, it seems to me that there is a portion of western people who seem enamored with everything American, including video games. There seems to be a popular notion that Ford, Chevrolet, and uh General Electric only manufacture the highest quality goods, and so why even look at foreign alternatives. No automobile besides the aforementioned "quality" makes will ever sit in these people's driveways.
I have to say that much of this is so much hogwash, and purely perception. Maybe some will call me forward thinking, but I fail to see the fascination with American culture and its supposedly superior manufactured goods. Probably for these reasons, I cannot get into buying domestic games for the Genesis, Super Nintendo, or other game systems. For starters, I do not read the English text and menu titles, and secondly, many of the games do not appeal to my interests. Tell me how the whole Halo series ever hit it off in the US?
Anyone with thoughts on the whole western fascination with American culture and games?

I'm not really into any specific culture or a "japanese fetishist" by any means but just wanted to make a point how this looks the other way around.

I like both Japanese stuff, and a little bit of American stuff as well. I don't like most American games, although I really enjoyed "Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord", but unfortunately, American games aren't what they used to be. Like you, I've never had any interest in superheroes or half naked warriors, but I enjoy buying both North American games and Japanese games. I usually buy North American releases, and the Japanese games I buy are usually Japan exclusives.

Just what "point" are you trying to make exactly? That the millions of people who bought Halo are wrong to like it and that it isn't any good, or that you just don't like it? As for cars, I know enough about them to know that many makes and models use the same chasis' and components (Lexus = Toyota), so ordinary people usually buy what they know has worked well in the past while wealthier people buy what they think makes them look good (see: Lexus = Toyota). They're all overpriced crap to me. You strike me as one of those people, though, who just likes to bash stuff because it's popular.

I guess you'd have to read the bashing people who like Japanese stuff thread old man

For most of my adolescence and 20s I was absolutely convinced I would be out of here by now, and that this place was going to tank sooner rather than later. Now that I have looked around, and learned more about how people work, I am pretty sure I'd run into the same stupid human tricks everywhere I might move, but with alien to me stupid cultural tricks I would no doubt stumble over along the way.

One thing about people who have a Japanese fetish is they cannot stand criticism or mockery, they cannot comprehend it isn't the greatest thing ever. Not saying they are all like that but the hardcore weirdows are.
Personally i couldn't care less about where stuff is from it just has to stand up on its own.

I don't get why people can't be just allowed to like what they like. It seems like an awful lot energy is going into this sort of thing lately. I don't really care what they like as long as they don't call me an asshole or hurt anyone in the process. I could go off on some rational argument but I wont.

i'll never understand the whole american obsession thing, but to each their own. it shouldn't really matter what someone does or doesn't like.

It all comes full circle, seeing as modern Japanese culture is just a horribly disfigured mutation of imported American culture.
