Ok, this one doesn't quite fit my own ps1 car combat games thread since it doesn't have weapons. But hell this is my absolute favorite ps1 racing game ever!
The first DD was good as a car wrecking game but it was lacking as a racing game. Narrow tracks, low speeds, not very exciting. The third one (DD RAW) was made by different guys altogether and it doesn't have that blast DD2 has. It also has some framerate problems at times. And this is one of the biggest DD2 advantages:
Smooth 30 FPS with twenty cars on the screen at the same time!
Some time ago I've decided to check some other ps1 racing games, and hell, the majority of them is so damn choppy being like between 10 and 20 frames per second when there are some opponents on the screen. NFS4 in particular was a bloody chopfest in a single race test drive mode.
Well, smooth and fast gameplay is great, but is not all DD2 has to offer. The game is just hella fun. I put it near the Daytona USA arcade cabinet on my list of fun racing games. High speed, crazy jumps, awesome crashes. It's very addicting.
There are some bad points like not being able to customize controls enough (I prefer either L/R buttons or D-pad for the acceleration), lack of rumble and analog controls (which is understandable for a 1996 game, since there was no dual shock back then), no splitscreen, and no manual gear shifting. But the rest of the game really makes up for these shortcomings.
The PC version is sad though. It's only 256 colors (versus PS1's 16-bit) and looks somewhat worse, even in hi-res mode. Some details are missing, like the rear lights and raw engine sounds at the start. Being a 1996 PC game it could also have some more polygons or other improvements, but it's just a lame console port. Even at the name entry screen you can't use letter keys and have to select letters by cursor keys! How bad is that!
Anyway, DD2 on ps1 is my personal racing king! I'd like to if I'm not the only one here who loves it.
