The Nintendo 3DS

We had a 3DS Launch thread and a few other threads devoted to specific games, so here's a thread for the system itself.

So who has this system now? And what are your thoughts?

I bought mine on launch day with absolutely no regrets. Sure, the library took a while to gather steam and still isn't terribly mind-blowing, but for what it's worth, Super Mario 3D Land is almost worth the system's admission price on its own. I'm playing Resident Evil Revelaitons right now (yes, the typo was deliberate) and loving it. Pushmo is a quintessential killer app from the 3DS Shop, and I've been loving the Virtual Console service.

Oddly enough, one of the main things I love about the system are the little odds and ends that were included out of the box and continue to trickle in. Things like the neat little game tracking app that saves statistics from every game (or app) you fire up. Even recent additions like SwapNotes, which is basically a slightly jazzed-up messaging service, show a certain level of consideration from Nintendo for a system that is no where near being (or intended to be) a multimedia powerhouse like Sony's handhelds.

Have it and play the hell out of it? Bought it and can't keep the dust off it? Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole?

So far I'm really enjoying it. The last game I bought was Super Mario 3D land, but after the release of MGS 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, and Tales of the Abyss 3D this month, I really am having a hard time deciding what title I should pick up next.
I really like playing original DS games on it too, the battery life seems to last fairly long when you're doing that, so for me it's like having a DS lite as well.

Are you playing Resident Evil Revelations with the circle pad pro right now? I've been thinking about picking one of those up, especially since I tend to get slight hand cramps when playing it. I've heard that for people with larger hands like myself it also makes playing games on the 3DS a lot more comfortable.

I got one for Christmas and I love the hell out of it. The first three games I bought were Super Mario 3D Land, The Legend of Zelda OOT 3D, and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. I've thoroughly enjoyed what each game has to offer on the system, and I feel great knowing I got a system that's truly worth owning. I look forward to Star Fox 3D, RE: Revelations, Kid Icarus, Mario Kart 7, and the rest of the 3DS goodness headed my way. Also, I bought a R4i card and it works like a charm for the DS library - just another added bonus. I haven't downloaded anything other than Metroid II, so I can't comment on that. All in all, though, I think it's a fantastic system, and is the first Nintendo system I've owned since the original GB, which says a lot IMO.

Nintendo is irrelevant to me these days. They lost me as a customer. I won't buy a 3DS or the successor to the Wii. I don't want more Mario games, ports of PS2 and N64 games. I don't want to pay for a console with no games, clunky features, and in all likelihood a good software drought.


The 3DS itself is costly, has a crappy battery life, a shitty UI, a 3D gimmick that doesn't do much, poor feedback with the touchscreen.
The best games it has are ports of games I've played already, staggered over a drought release cycle.

Zelda OOT, SF4, Starfox, Tales of the Abyss, SMT, Metal Gear Solid 3, Cave Story.... Remakes and ports.
Mario Land 3D, Mario Kart 7... Why should I jump on board over another Mario title?
Gutted DOA & Tekken games? Not impressed.

I see the merits in all those games, their probably awesome. I see nothing new or exciting about the 3DS though, and won't buy one.

RE plays just fine without the Circle Pad Pro imo, but I'm going to have to pick it up once I buy MGS3. I downloaded the demo the other day and christ is it awkward with the stock controls.

Not yet I had to pawn my PSP though fuckin sucks but I want a Vita but why get one now when they will have a 4G version next year lol.

3DS Lite + built in Dual analogue

The 3DS has proven to be a system worth owning based on its ever increasing quality (still small though) library and its simplicity. Not to make this into a 3DS vs Vita debate but you can open the Nintendo handheld and everything is just about self explanatory unlike the Vita which is much more complicated. The only fault I can find which gives me pain is the lack of GBA titles available for download.

I'll wait a few years for the price to drop, the libary to get better and for homebrew to flourish.

That being said, the GBA games we got on the Ambassador program were awesome.

Loving the 3DS. I stopped gaming on handhelds for a long time. I play it just as much as i did with my original gameboy 20+ years ago. No handheld has been this good for me since. The GG, GBC, GBA, SP, PSP, DSlite i have them all and dont even play them. I took up game stops offer on black Friday where they gave me 70 dollars for my dslite towards the purchase of a 3ds. Best move ever!!

What's the point of 3D anyways?? It's just a gimmic to get people to buy the 3DS

I played SM3DL last weekend at my friends, I played it mosty in 2D..It's just a Mini Gamecube

What's the approx. battery life on the 3DS?
