Super Mario 3D Land
Resident Evil: Revelations
Sakura Samurai (eshop download)
+1 on Sakura Samurai. That's a fun game!
It's a great game. I had to call out the reviewer on 1up.com that gave it a C+ because it was "too hard."
Thus far, I've really enjoyed Resident Evil: Revelations, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Shinobi. Revelations looks and plays really well on the handheld. As a fan of the Shinobi series, this new entry did not disappoint. It matches the gameplay and difficulty of it's predecessors.
The one game I am looking to play is "Kid Icarus Uprising". So far, the vast majority of reviews are giving the game a solid 8 out of 10. After seeing a couple of game play videos, the multiplayer aspect to the game looks really fun. I am having a hard time resisting the urge to buy this title this weekend! :daze:
I think Nintendo has screwed up with the 3DS, and partly as a reaction, or perhaps panic, to finally being threatened in the handheld market. Ipods and smart phones have been eating away at Nintendo's dominance. The combination of ubiquity, power, and inexpensive games makes it a real attractive alternative, especially or parents who are buying the hardware and software. Kids drive a large part of the DS market, and can see shelling out money for an iPod and loading it up with $1 games rather than getting a DS and paying $20-35 a game.
Because Nintendo is finally challenged, they left their standard model of handheld making: creating a nice form factor for relatively underpowered "last gen" graphics capabilities that gave incredible battery life in a small form and relying on software to drive their market. They stuck to this with their Game Boy line, and their DS line, up until the 3DS.
With the 3DS, they added significantly more powerful hardware (not current gen, but a fairly robust jump from their last system and more in line with today's portables) and a 3d gimmick (which sucks batteries). Now, they have a system with a small screen, a 3d gimmick, decent graphics and relativey sucky battery life (especially when using the 3d effect).
I think the proper model would have been to follow the digital download model of the iPod and handheld market. Sony tried to do this with the PSP Go, but chose a terrible time and way to do it. By introducing a system that was not a sequel (i.e. same innards as the PSP) and adding a digital-only download model, they created the perspective that they were taking something away from gamers (i.e. taking away access to their current games and making them re-buy them, which they were). Instead, I think Sony, too, should have introduced the Vita as d/l only with built-in memory, not the Go.
The second part of this, which Sony doesn't understand so it wouldn't really help them even if they did concentrate on d/l, is to set up a model that encourages cheap games. The pricing structure on PSP games is still ridiculous, as it is for all of Sony's games. Also, they could open up the platform to indie developers and make them pass an approval process, much like Apple does, to ensure reasonable quality. Of course, Sony would have to have reduced the graphic horsepower of their system a bit too and get more battery life. Battery life is key for good portable gaming, and now that Nintendo has given up on that aspect, no mobile platform (outside of the DS, which Nintendo doesn't really support any more) has great battery life.
I think Nintendo should have made a lesser powered (more powerful than the DS, but maybe not as much as the 3DS), d/l only, ds form factor handheld with great battery life. By becoming "yet another" system that has reduced battery life, and continuing with the expensive physical game model, they assure that they will no longer dominate the handheld market. Perhaps this was inevitible, but they could have retrenched their position by following these moves. Of course, they would have had to have followed up with a good online model and pricing structure as well.
Just seen a video of the upcoming Fire Emblem game looks:love: brilliant.
the one title that I think I will enjoy is Dream Trigger 3D! I've heard that it is quite a challenging shmup. I just have to see if Futureshop is willing to price match with Bestbuy Canada since the game was on clearance for $9.99!
This monster is going to be released in Japan. Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers . It's a cyberpunk RPG with first person perspective and dungeons; the link is to the PS version because that has a review but presumably this remake will be based upon the Saturn's Extra Dungeon version. It involves recruiting and crossbreeding digital devils but as it's fairly light in the RPG department (read 'easy') and has a tolerable story (which is exceptional for RPGs) it can be considered a hybrid genre. No towns. Related to the Persona series but not too closely, it doesn't suck. At leat jerry coeurl and Zoltor should get a kick out of it when it comes over.
Was it Sonic Labyrinth?
No, I think it was actually Sonic Chaos. I almost bought that game today to see if I was right, but they wanted $10 for it, so I opted to take my money to Taco Bell instead.
Thanks for the heads up StarMist. I'm going to keep an eye out for this one. Another title that I can't wait to be released is "Fractured Soul 3D" that is being produced by Ignition Entertainment. It is a pretty unique shooter/side-scrolling platformer that utilizes both screens of the 3DS. As you progress through a given level, you are forced to switch between the two screens in order to dodge bullets, avoid enemies and obstacles.
If and when this game is released, it will be a day 1 purchase for me! I believe this game is set to be released on July 31st 2012!
