Lukemorse1
So what if he lives in Japan, has a huge collection, owns several NEOGEO candy cabs etc. He may have some good tips on repairing consoles and stuff but the majority of his vidoes are repetitive and overrated. not to mention he posts several times a day, how can anybody have a life and post so many youtube vidoes? His wife also left him, supposedly from his obsession.
GameSack!
Just kidding, it's the best one there :p.
I dunno man, The Irate Gamer certainly didn't deserve all the popularity he had but he was pretty hated too.
Petedorr:-Most overrated channel on youtube right now. Simply put, this guy has no life whatsoever. He has to buy every new video game on the store shelf, and make these pointless and boring "Stuff I bought" videos, where he mumbles about his latest purchases for 15 or so mins. I bet making these vids is the highlight of his day. I swear 80% of his videos are about stuff he purchased. I asked him to make more quality VG features, and his cronies jumped on me and started bombing me with insults; I had "too many" negative votes in matter of seconds. Some of his viewers are such ass kissers that I bet they would empty his balls if they had a chance to blow him. Worst yet, why does he have so many subs? There are VG channels with high quality contents (implantgames, snowcon 3, gamesack) that don't have enough subs. sad!
Cubex55:-These guys are assholes, plain and simple. They will ban you if you comment "first" on their videos or if you have a harsh opinion of some Amiga game. I was one of the victims, yes. These egocentric assholes had their account removed from youtube due to copyright infringement. Fuck ya!
Not going to hate on anyone so....
Underrated = Starsoldier1 he is hilarious.
I'm pretty sure he's not a partner, but i could be mistaken.
I think Happyconsolegamer, MN12BIRD, and Gamester81 are underrated. they are all awesome.
I think one of the only video game related shows that lives up the hype and popularity is Classic Game Room. Mark Bussler is awesome!
I don't think HCG is underrated.
I can't believe anyone's said iJustine or pretty much every single person that posts a minecraft let's play.
AVGN
I'm gonna have to second Petedorr, good god the guy is fucking boring. I've seen cardboard boxes with more personality than that guy.
lol only about $325 000 http://www.indiegogo.com/Angry-Video...Nerd-The-Movie
Pat the NES Punk is hit or miss with me. That's about all I can think of.
This! 1000 times this.
I never understood the appeal of that guy's videos. The whole premise is "Hey look, here's me hating some stuff and being a brat about it" and everyone creams their panties and throws money at him. I'm sorry, but I'm fully capable of being pissed at things myself, I really don't need to watch a 10 minute video of a guy complaining about how much he sucks at Ninja Gaiden and how it's the worst thing ever. Suck it up princess, there are bad games out there, no need to throw a tantrum about it on camera.
The only AVGN video I liked was his one on Plumbers Don't Wear Ties. Just for the look of shock and "What the hell kind of a game is this?!" reaction.
But I agree he's pretty overrated. I pretty much hate most videos that spend more time filming their face talking and less time showing off the games themselves. Lukemorse's videos are ok at times, but a lot of the time he seems to be a bit too into the games or hardware he's showing off and he comes off a bit obsessed/overly excited.
The only channels I continue to enjoy are Classic Game Room and Game Sack. These appear to be more professionally done, so the audio and video is top notch. Also these don't have some stupid gimmick and the footage is all from real hardware.
I really don't think that is giving the guy enough credit. Ninja Gaiden is a particularly bad example since, like other videos, he tried to have fun with it by including a second actor and throwing some humor into the mix.
The appeal of AVGN is pretty simply to understand, and it has nothing to do with hating stuff and being a "brat" about it. It was meant to encapsulate the feeling of frustration gamers had as kids. He goes in depth into a the history of certain games, consoles, and other miscellania. Sure, he plays quite a few bad games and rips on them, but in that way, he is not just a one trick pony.
My favorite video of his is the Nintendo Power magazine one, just because it brought back a lot of memories of the late eighties and early nineties. I find if he is anything, it is being very good at exploring what it was like to be a kid growing up with games.
I find the exact opposite. Instead of reminding me what it was like to play games as a kid, he reminds me of those annoying kids back in school that would constantly rip on whatever game you were into at the time (even if they hadn't played it, because it surely can't be as good as their favourite game). A lot of it was the effect of the console wars, but some of it happened with games on the same console. In retrospect I don't know if it was an attempt at getting more attention or just the general "you're cool if you hate stuff" attitude, but it sure was annoying. Those people were all supposed "experts" on the topics too, because you know they read a game pro once a month lol. The AVGN just reminds me of one of those guys, grown up and with access to AV equipment.
I never got too frustrated with games as a kid. Playing games back then (even the bad ones) was a borderline euphoric experience. I still like games a lot now, but back then it was like drugs. I was way too damn happy to be playing a video game to really ever get too pissed off. The only thing that was frustrating was when someone tried to make me stop playing.
Absolutely! Classic Game Room is my favourite by far. I've yet to check out Game Sack... I know I know, shame on me.
Let me guess... You only watched the early AVGN episodes right? I recommend you watch the Nerd's newer ones, like the CDi special, Zelda 2 (NSFW sex jokes in it), ROB the Robot, Nintendo World Championships and maybe his Castlevania special. In those episodes he spends more time explaining the game in a very walkthrough sort of manner with very little anger, than actually complaining about the game and throwing a temper tantrum. He only really does that at the end of the video when he declares the game a piece of crap. Those are very, very enjoyable to watch and are unusually lax for AVGN's standard. One episode in particular, Swordquest, is purely educational. It has maybe one or two swear words if that.
On the other hand, the worst episode (unfortunately) was Odyssey, what a waste of an otherwise interesting subject... Total opposite of Swordquest.
Angry Video Game Nerd is a very funny guy. I watch his videos when I need a good laugh; I don't go to his page for journalist reviews.
CGR is pretty overrated IMO... It's definitely fun to watch some episodes because Mark has a cool voice & fun humor but also I find a lot of their reviews/interviews shallow & uninsightful.
I have to agree with that.
I like some of his reviews, but lot of his shooter reviews are about how he likes "vertical space ship shooters" and how the shmup he is reviewing is a must own for "shooter fans". His Dodonpachi review is probably the most half assed review I've seen thus far.
Happy Console Gamer - All this guy ever talks about is how he "loves" every game. He never goes into any detail explaining the content of the game or it's history. Half of the shit he shows he has either played for about 1 minute or never played it at all. His production work is really solid.
Lukemorse - He bores me to death. People seem to be obsessed with him just because he's a westerner living in Japan. Who gives a fuck. I'm not impressed.
Very much agreed. That's why at Game Sack we do our best to keep the camera segments as short as possible, but we feel they're still important as it gives faces to the voices and helps give us more distinct personalities. We might do a somewhat lengthy (maybe a few minutes) sketch that isn't directly related to gaming in its subject matter in the future just for fun, but rest assured that stuff like this will be few and far between. It's about the games, man!Quote:

Both AVGN and CGR are more entertainment shows rather than pure review shows.
AVGN is funny; perhaps not consistently so, but some of his shows are hilarious. His review of the Sega Genesis/CD/32X monstrosity is funny and dead-on at the same time.
As for CGR, Mark's reviews are never insightful, but I get a feel for the games by watching the game play and getting his reaction. I *like* that he doesn't rate the games. I don't find any reviewer particularly helpful when evaluating a game, but Mark comes closest. Other reviewers are certainly more informative about game features, etc.
I 100% agree, while I find he has quite a few interesting and useful videos, I also think that just because you live in japan, have 4 NEO GEO cabs, and own almost every variation of the PC-Engine and doesn't mean your automatically the best thing since sliced bread! It seems like so many Japanophile gamer anime nerds like to elevate him to gamer-godlike status. I just don't see the point... -_-
AVGN: I used to think he was funny until I began to start watching some of his reviews again. In the Sega 32X review, he could have easily plugged in everything by plugging the Genesis into one outlet and everything else into the power strip. Also I used to think his Superman 64 review was good, but then I actually played Superman 64. The ring stages are very fun to play through. The Nerd didn't even get past the first level which is a shame because the second level sucked and was full of glitches. That's where he could've gotten a lot of his humour from. His Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle Review had very little review in it. All I remember is pointless whining and boring fight scenes. 3 more shitty ones that stick out in my mind are Ninja Gaiden, Rob the Robot, & Star Wars.
The worst part about the Nerd was the whole Indiegogo and asking the fans to fund his own movie for him. The AVGN show was always best when it had no budget. The Nerd would also have more money if he'd get away from ScrewAttack.
HVGN: I don't like this guy because he keeps saying everything he reviews is underrated. He even said this about Earthbound which is easily one of the most overrated games I've ever seen.
I don't know if he's overrated or not, but one of the worst game reviewers on youtube is some guy called "Kolibiri123". He uses a really cheap mic, and sounds very annoying.
The ones I like.
Mark from CGR.
Gamechasers has kept me entertained quite a bit.
Not to be a kissass but I enjoy Gamesack.
There are plenty of others that I can't think of at the moment.
The ones I dislike.
Unboxings. Hey, I have a camera in one hand, and with the other I'm going to fumble with a package for 5 minutes. It's almost like watching video of a stranger opening Christmas presents "why do I care"?
All the 12 y/o kids copying AVGN. 1. Bad mic 2. Foul mouth 3. Scream as loud as you can about some shitty game. I can feel my ears starting to bleed already.
K-Wing/Derek from CGR Undertow. These guys reviews really aren't that bad, but it seems every video is just another chance for them to gush about yet another great Nintendo game or product. For the record, I love Nintendo but there are plenty of other great consoles out there.
I like Gamesack and that's about it. Classic Gameroom's talking hand doesn't really do it for me, I don't like opening videos. I really hate the barrage of 'tube characters with 'tude, and think they have done almost as much to poison the well as the mainstream gaming media has.
Joe's work sort of has me musing on whether or not me and the kiddo can do something amusing and informative though. As the kid currently has a speech impediment and I am notoriously non-picturesque I am hesitant.
Continue?, JonTron and HVGN are IMO rather underrated.
Continue? and Jontron are just funny and sometimes spew out some decent facts about whatever games they might be playing.
But HVGN really has a lot to say about the games he reviews and he actually brings up quite a few underrated classics instead of just pulling out the worst games he can find.
Guys, please donate money to AVGN. Don't you want to see the funniest VG related movie?
If we donate 100-200 bucks each, we can help him alot!
CGR may be a little bit overrated. I like the interviews he does (like the Tommy Tallarico one) and hardware reviews though and he does keep content coming but some of his videos can't hold my attention for two minutes. Doesn't mean the stuff he does isn't awesome.
Probably rinry's channel is overrated by far. I never watch the videos but heard of her before. So I did a quick search a few minutes ago to see what her videos are like and I stumbled across a top comment on a Final Fight video "Yeah she is a cutie pie for sure. As everyone said though, her voice is the best part. It's enchanting." I don't think her viewers focus on the content as they do the content provider. Her videos aren't that entertaining.
