Which name for the console do you prefer?
I would have been happy if they had kept the name Mega Drive for the US. Genesis just sounds too much like corporate America (of that era). However I have gotten used to Genesis, and it doesn't really bother me too much. At least they kept the color scheme from the Japanese Mega Drive (red plastic around the power LED).
I REALLY hated the gigantic "SEGA CD" text that they put on the US unit, though. Could they have chosen a bigger font point? I'm sure if they could have, they would have. And Copperplate Gothic? I liked the custom MEGA CD font better.
they couldn't use the Genesis name, supposedly because a product in the US was called MegaDrive.. don't know if this is true, but it seems any SEGA employee i ask, even my neighbor, thats what they say... so it must be true..
Being European my view may be slightly bias (although that's never stopped me posting unfounded statements before) but Mega Drive is by far the better name.
Genesis are a band not a console.
MegaDrive definitely, it's the original name and it sounds better. Changing the name to Genesis in the US was pretty much a last minute thing, as they could not use the name 'MegaDrive' due to some other product named the same thing.
While "Mega Drive" does sound cooler, after so many years of "Genesis" you just accept it and get on with things.
Now dealing with game store clerks that roll their eyes at you when you ask about Genesis games....that i can never accept.
I prefer Mega Drive. It's the original name, and it suits the hardware so good. Genesis just seems like a tool of christian propaganda.
Hmh. Maybe I´m the only person in this entire world who thinks so, but I love the name Genesis. It sounds so cool!
Mega Drive sounds...kinda childish. I don´t think words like Mega or Super fit game consoles well...
I have an emotional attachment to Genesis, but I generally refer to it as a Mega Drive or MD nowaday.
I'm big on Japanese things.
(did you know Lords of Thunder is like $10 in japan?)
Yeah, but it wasn't released for the Japanese Mega CD. Only the Sega CD and PAL Mega CD.
Megadrive always sounded a bit goofy to me. Like the SNES and all their "Super" titles. What does Megadrive mean anyhow? I get the mega part, as mega was always part of Sega's marketing on the Master System carts... but Drive? Where was it driving to? It didn't have a hard drive, there was no drive of any kind unless there were weird Japanese floppy disk attachments. I could see the MegaDrive being sold as the MegaCD attachment, because it has a CD drive. Genesis wasn't as flashy, but it got the point across that this was something new.
Drive is for the processor. It "drives" fast.
MegaDrive carries an 80s ring to me, while Genesis could still be the name of a modern console. It's just a cool word.
I'm glad i'm not the only one who finds the "Super" title on games to be silly.Quote:

Funny side story, the very first time i saw a Genesis (back in my Nintendo only days) I saw the round portion of the system and thought that it played CD's. :)Quote:

Yeah, a friend of mine demanded that the CD-ROM was built into the Mega Drive when I showed him the first picture ever of the console back in the 1970's or 80's or whenever it was. I was skeptical.
And I always thought that Super Castlevania IV was perhaps the most retarded name for a game ever because it implied that there was another version of Castlevania IV that wasn't as good. Despite this, it remains my mostest favoritest SNES game of all time.
