I've ranked the titles I own in order of how much I enjoy playing them. I do not dislike any of these titles, but I like the ones at the top of the list much more than those on the bottom. Also, I'd love to pick up the rest of the GBA games as well as Dracula X for SNES (I don't own a PCE).

The Adventure (GB) - okay but so slow...
Super Castlevania IV (SNES) - best 2d Castlevania
Bloodlines (Gen) - okay game, but nowhere near as good as IV
Castlevania (N64) - good game
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness (N64) - best 3d Castlevania
Chronicles (PS1) - good but hard
Circle of the Moon (GBA) - good metroidvania
Lament of Innocence (PS2) - bad game
Curse of Darkness (Xbox) - also a bad game
Aria of Sorrow (GBA) - okay to good
Dawn of Sorrow (DS) - same as above
Portrait of Ruin (DS) - pretty good game, my first metroidvania
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (Wii Virtual Console) - great game, 2nd best 2d game in the series
Dracula X Chronicles (PSP) - great collection!
The Adventure ReBirth (WiiWare) - very good classic-style 2d Castlevania.
Order of Ecclesia (DS) - one of the best metroidvanias
Missing: Lords of Shadow (I don't have a PS3 or 360), II and III for the NES, II and Legends for Game Boy, Harmony of Dissonance, Dracula X for SNES, the 2d XBLA one.

In the past, I have owned Super Castlevania IV, Circle of the Moon, Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin. I bought those all at retail (although SCIV was a bargain bin game think I got it for $20). All of those were sold when I got rid of their respective systems.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (DS)
How much better actually is Legacy of Darkness? Isn't it mainly just a remake of Castlevania 64 (which is a good game incidentally), but with more characters?
I always thought the extra stuff made it sound more bloated, and from what I've seen of it I don't like the presentation much, Castlevania 64 has very classy presentation, whilst Legacy of Darkness looks more B movie themed.
I have:
Castlevania (NES)
Castlevania II (NES)
Castlevania III (NES)
Castlevania: Bloodlines (GEN)
Castlevania (N64)
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness (N64)
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (PS2)
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (Xbox)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Xbox 360; part of Konami Classics Vol 1)
Castlevania Chronicles (PS3; download)
I'd love to get both SNES titles. IV's price is alright and may jump on it soon, Dracula X's prices are ridiculous. The only way I will ever get that is if I get lucky at a thrift store/yard sale.
Not only are Dracula X's prices ridiculous, the game sucks. Ten years ago that game was like $15 loose and I still didn't want it.
Pre-2006, I used to have:
NES: 1-3 (loose yet in pristine condition...for some reason several of the NES games I bought at Software Etc. in the early '00's looked like they came right out of the box...they sold them with manuals and all!)
SNES: SCIV (loose)
Genesis: Bloodlines (Majesco re-release, bought in early '01 at Toys 'R Us
PS1: SOTN (Greatest Hits copy, bought new for $20 in early '02, sold it several years later to a fellow Sega-16'er ;) )
Game Boy: Adventure and Belmont's Revenge
I'd also owned Dracula X (SNES) on two previous occasions; it was my first-ever CV game. I broke the first copy out of frustration. :D
There are multiple soundtrack CDs. The only one I have is the one that came in the Portrait of Ruin preorder bonus. There was also one for Rondo, one for SOTN, one for Circle of the Moon combined with Harmony of Dissonance, and others.
The one I had did not come with a game but was sold separately and had songs from many of the games. Some kind of anniversary thing IIRC.
Bloated? No, no. Basically, LoD makes the first N64 Castlevania a more complete game. Most of the stuff in LoD had been originally planned for the first version, but had been cut for time. They finished that for the second version.
What does it add? It adds two more playable characters, better graphics (including a High Res mode that requires the expansion pak, looks great, but has worse framerates; many people dislike it for its framerate, but I use it anyway. It makes the game look so much better... and I think even in Lo Res, the game is a bit improved over the first version too.), and several more stages as well, including a new first stage and a couple more. Some other levels have had some edits as well.
In LoD, the first mode has you playing as Cornell, the werewolf. He's really, really powerful, and makes combat somewhat easy, but I don't mind that, because the most fun part of the game is the platforming and adventure elements anyway, not the fighting. Cornell has no time limit, and you play through every stage in this mode. Once you beat it with Cornell, then you play the second mode, Henry's. Here you have to go through certain stages and find children hidden in them. Succeed at that and you unlock the remixed versions of Rinehardt and Carrie's modes (same story and stages as they have in the first game, just with the LoD graphics and level designs).
So yeah, I really don't know what you mean about "B Movie themed". First, Castlevania as a franchise is ABOUT being B movie themed, and has been since the beginning. And second, apart from the new levels (and they're great; the opening ships level is better than the forest level that starts the original game, in my opinion), the only major change is the new characters and their stories. And yes, you play as a werewolf, going to the castle to rescue his sister. So? What's so bad about that? He's great fun to play as...
Oh, LoD does have a new main menu screen. It is too bad that the violin piece from the first game wasn't kept, that was nice... oh well, LoD's certainly the better game overall.
Personally I never saw the Castlevania series as straight B-Movie inspired, I see them more like classic Dracula, with a move towards Japanese anime influence happening later on creating a combination of the two.
See, what you've said there really does make it sound bloated to me, it sounds like you play through an entire game as the uninteresting werewolf character before you can be Reinhardt? and then after completing it you have to play through remixed versions of all the same levels all over again?
I guess the only way for me to be able to tell is to play it myself, maybe I'll pick up a copy of it one day.
It's just a very frustrating experience. The jump controls are dodgy, and akin to Castlevania 1, which I didn't care for. If you loved the way Castlevania 1 controls, then you'll probably like Dracula X. Getting hit throws you back too dramatically, as well. This is combined with very annoying enemy placement, and overall unforgiving difficulty (enemies requiring multiple hits, enemies that move faster than the controls allow you to react, getting hit taking off a large chunk of health). The level design is also nothing special. On the positive side, it has very good graphics and sound for SNES. But that's not enough.
There's also the fact that it's basically the same game as Rondo of Blood, but worse in every way except graphics, and minus like half the game. So even if you forgive its flaws, it's still pretty redundant. But I never played Rondo until years later, and I always hated Dracula X. Incidentally, I think Rondo itself is a little overrated, but still worth playing.
Seriously?
It was confirmed that Dracula X was it's own game apart from the Pc Engine version. Also the game isn't as hard as you claim it to be. It's got the type of difficulty where it's hard at first but after a few times to getting to know the patterns around, it gets quite enjoyable. Also you have OTHER weapons to fight off the enemies and the back flip that really helps avoid many enemy attacks. Finding pork chops is quite more harder to find in the game tho but you'll be able to reach them in time. Again, the game isn't as bad you think it is. I recommend you check it out again and see if you still feel the same way after a few levels.

Confirmed by whom? Obviously it's far from being the same exact game, but it seems pretty clear that they created Dracula X out of Rondo.
I've tried it multiple times, with the same results. The game is widely disliked, it's not just me.Quote:

No, it's always been a mishmash of elements from the start. I mean, you have mummies, werewolves, medusa heads, Death, giant bats, etc, and many of those elements have been there since the beginning. The series has also always had a random mishmash of stuff from different historical periods, drawing equally from classical Greece, Medieval times, the 16th-19th centuries, and modern day... very few to none of the games have much of any solid ties to the time they're supposedly set in, they're a random mixture of stuff, a lot of it influenced by monster movies.
But returning to your point, no, stuff like mummies, zombies, medusa heads, etc. don't come out of Dracula.
Cornell is by far the best character in the game, so he's far from uninteresting... and as I said, he was supposed to be in the game all along, they only had to cut it because the first version was rushed.Quote:

And seriously, Rinehardt is awful. I can't think of one reason to ever want to play as him in either version of the game... ranged attacks are absolutely essential in that game, and he doesn't have a good one!
You are right that you play through parts of the game four different times, if you want to complete everything, but it IS different each time. Cornell goes through everything and with no time limit, Henry only goes through ~5 stages and has to find hidden children, and Carrie and Rinehardt go through only some of the stages, and have a time limit. It's not the same each time.
You'd always heard good things about SNES Dracula X, really? Where were you asking, because the game's generally considered to be a pretty serious disappointment compared to the Turbo CD title it's a spinoff of, and for good reason... it's nowhere near as good as either that game or Super Castlevania IV. On that note, yeah, SC IV is my favorite 2d Castlevania, and I love things like its good whip controls that you won't find in any other game in the series. RoB is behind it. As for SNES Dracula X... um, no, it's nowhere remotely near those two, and nor is the also disappointing (but for different reasons) Bloodlines. I'm not sure which of those two I like more, on that note... I'd need to play SNES Dracula X than I have to be able to say for sure.
Well, personally I disagree with you, but I can see it from your perspective, the Castlevania series doesn't really have a B-movie feeling to me at all, the protagonists, antagonists, and environments are all classic horror movie through and through for me, sure there are a mish mash of monsters in them, but they're all also classic monsters, and heck, the only reason they were added was to give the player some more interesting boss fights in the game, Its more a homage to all the classic films IMO, with a very eastern flavour becoming more prominent later on.
For me the environments play a big part in the feel of B-Movies, B-Movies for instance are often set in present day, urban environments, or you'll have the characters in hotels, holiday resorts, movie drive-ins, or remote villages, often you'll have a gimmick to get people in "Dracula Vs the Wolfman" for instance, or "Dracula 2050AD".
Are there any Blacula's or Blacula hunters in the Castlevania series?
I agree. I played RoB and Dracula X back-to-back last Fall, and RoB was a much more pleasant experience. Dracula X has poor, cramped level design (rushed as well, how the hell is it that you walk up the stairs to the next room, and the next room is shown with no stairs or gap in the walls to indicate where you came from?) with the exception of Level 1 and alternate Level 5, loosey-goosey controls and annoyingly non-existent invincibility upon getting hit by enemies.
However, the music is another story, as it has a GREAT rendition of the classic CV themes and part of the RoB soundtrack. The game has my favorite rendition of "Bloody Tears" ever. The SFX also blow those of RoB's right out the water (the TG-16-powered SFX was one of my few gripes of that game).
Remember CD games have MUCH more memory for longer games than a cart does.
Castlevania Bloodlines, and...
That's it. :( I played 2, 3 and Advance when I was younger, though. Died very often and rarely got far in any of them.
