What's a speccy?
The console that made video gaming accessable to the UK. Read the article, visit the World of Spectrum website, play some of the games and turn yourself into a believer.
Until then:

It's a computer, not a console.
Loooove the comments under that article...
Yep. Sounds about right! "The best thing about the Spectrum was when I bought a Commodore computer instead!" :pQuote:
We ordered a 16K Spectrum when it was first advertised. Many weeks later, it arrived. And didn't work. We sent it back, waited many more weeks, and it came back. Still didn't work. So we sent it back, asked for a refund, and bought a Vic-20, which worked first time, every time, for nearly decade
One of the best gaming machines ever made
We had one! :) My favorite game on it was 'PSSST', it featured a little robot that had to
protect a growing plant from insects, worms etc. I also liked 'Cookie', though I don't
remember it as much as PSSST.
My dad bought me another one a few years back, but I couldn't get it to run. I think I
then gave it to a friend. I kept PSSST, Cookie and NeverEnding Story for myself, though :)
It's got nothing on the C64, but unlike the Atari <> Amiga situation it at least forced healthy competition. Plus it has a ton of great games.
Happy birthday speccy.
Was a great little system this, never tried to be anything it wasn't. Wasn't the best by any means, but that was never Sir Clives goal. He wanted to make computers affordable so that the average Joe could afford it. one of the many things that lead to its success. Loved my speccy! and still have it!
Dizzy, Back 2 Skool, spy hunter! to name but a few great games!
Happy birthday old friend! Thanks for the great memories
I have fond memories of playing ports of Spectrum games on C64 because I don't live in Europe and had no other access back in the day
Gotta love the enthusiasm of the Speccy owners. It was the little computer that almost could, and once in awhile it did.
This thread just isn't complete without a link to this one:

The best thing about the various Sinclair computers was the style. I wish Atari/CBM had half the style the Spectrums had. :)
That's particularly true of the CBMs - up until the A500, CBMs had less style than a shoebox. Atari at least made an effort, though said effort fell short of the Spectrum.
Yeah, I vaguely remember the Timex Sinclair but its gaming presence here was a joke.
I have played a ridiculous number of Speccy (and Amstrad) games on emulators this past decade, though, to try and make up for my regional defiency there. It's not my favourite '80s system by any means but I think people interested in classic gaming should take the time to try it out.
I'll never understand the appeal of the spectrum, but obviously a lot of other people do, so happy birthday.
It was a highly affordable (read: cheap) and fully assembled computer that, due to its low-budget price tag, helped to get computers into many households and thus into the daily life of a lot of people - at least in Europe. So it definitely is worth being remembered.
Happy birthday Speccy! You owned my childhood!
My first ever computer. My parents bought it for me second hand in the summer of '89. By this time its games were reaching the limits and were very good indeed. Titles like Hysteria, Silkworm, Marauder, Commando, R-Type, Zynaps, Exolon, Firefly and many many others managed to fill the screen with flicker-free hoards of sprites. I later bought C-64 as well but ended up selling it. I never sold the Spectrum. Far better machine both for gaming and general computing.
