There was a TV spot sometime around the mid 90's. Some fat kid playing with a Genesis controller. He apparently wins, starts screaming things like "Yeah" and "Who's the man" and then runs out of breath.

Elusive, it's not just the Bible. (Although, as a kid, it WAS fun asking uptight adults about the adult "contents" of the Bible.) A lot of major religions incorporate violence, in the from of divine intervention and/or holy wars. (Despite what Wisdom Tree would have some of us believe :D)

Come to think of it, the source material for Disney-fied franchises like the Little Mermaid and The Hunchback of Notredame would not be considered family friendly material either.

...almost on cue, I caught an episode CSI Miami last night. It centered around videogame related killings. Basically, a bunch of college students imitating the events depicted in Urban Hell-Raiser, a thinly veiled GTA.

Unfortunately the episode had a for-the-non-gamer-BY-the-non-gamer feel to it; in that the gaming aspects seemed to live up to current stereotypes associated with videogames rather than reflecting what really goes on; with a "violent videogames are corrupting our mindless-youth" message.

If playing videogames hadn't made me lazy, I might've written an angry email to the producers of the show. :D

CSI:Miami is the worst show out of the three.

The orginial show at least tries to remain somewhat realistic but that Miami...they come up with some crap that is so out there.

"Let's clean up this grainy video so we can clearly see the murderers face." Haha...ok.

"The crime was recorded on this pot the victim was spinning, lets scan it with this laser and we will listen to it". Do the writers get a bonus for coming up with the absurd crap?

Bonus points for me as the "Mythbusters" proved my utter disbelief correct.

The biggest problem the media have is they believe that violent videogames/rap/whatever influence the kids to go on killing sprees, when it's that the kids who are more likely to go on killing sprees will be drawn to those types of things. Not to say everyone who does like this stuff is a killer, but when was the last time you heard someone kill someone else after watching Casablanca, or listening to Mozart?

Unless the victims were killed with Casablanca DVDs, or Mozart tapes, chances are no one will make the connection. Or want to make the connection. THAT is the problem. The media isn't out there to connect Mozart, or Casablanca to crime. They are, however, out there trying to connect videogames to violence. If there's even a remote link to a criminal and videogames in any way some people assume, and try to get others to assume, that videogames were the sole cause behind the criminal's behavior.

HEH! The grainy video/laser audio crackes me up as well. I have to work with photos/video/audio on a semi-daily basis. And while it would be nice to have a program that can magically turn fifteen pixels into high-resolution footage; none has been made so far.
I was particularly amused, in a disturbing way; that "Suburban Hell-Raiser", which supposedly required a next-gen console to play, "featured" first-generation PS2-ish graphics, crystal clear audio, yet 8-Bit "bleep bloop" bgm...

Yes TV still somehow stands behind its proud tradition of having cutting edge graphics and Pac-man/Donkey Kong sounds.

I ended up sending an e-mail to the show (Miami) back when that VG episode first ran. I lamented them for portraying video game players as nothing more than domestic terrorists.

and Gradius taught me to be a crack spaceship pilot. :bull:

Playing games with guns can helps improve hand-eye co-ordination and therefore firearm accuracy increases as a result. Dancing mat games can improve dancing. Back in the day games never tried to be too real (hence things like fireballs and blue speedy hedgehogs) but with more realistic games glorying guns, violence and general carnage, especially for children who have not developed the knowledge of right or wrong, it comes across as cool. The true problem is with crappy parents who buy their children such games.

Not to nitpick, but unless you're talking about lifting a lightgun I don't see how thumbing an analogue stick or some button combo can increase your co-ordination - where's the link between bushing buttons and being able to touch your nose?

Games do not recreate kickback from guns, and most (if any) do not model a sniper rifle correctly. At best you can learn to "lead the target.

In *REAL* sniping you have to take in account changing wind direction between you and your target and also the dropping of the bullet over distances.

And that is just minor information i got from watching a show or two on military/sport sniper shooting.

Indeed I am talking about playing with a lightgun. I am also not talking about sniping but general accuracy. Playing racing games with steering wheels could help improve driving abilities, however, it doesn't make you Rubens Barrichello.
