Your "Stuck in a Bunker" Console

Inspired by another thread, I thought it would be fun know which console you'd prefer to be stuck with if you could only chose one under the quirky and controlled circumstance.

A few rules...

1. No Internet Connection in the bunker

2. Up to 3 other players with you in the bunker

3. You can bring up to 20 official games of your chosen system with you, but backwards compatabilty is NOT an option.

4. Emulation is also NOT an option

5. PCs are not available

6. Officially released compilation games are acceptable

7. Your system of choice can play games of ANY region

Basically, It's you, up to 3 other players, a gaming console, and up to 20 games made specifically for your chosen system.

Well, if there were 3 other people with me in the bunker, I would want a console that has a great choice of multiplayer games(more than 2 players).

Long story short, I'd choose the Gamecube, as there's lots of great multiplayer games on it.

I'd choose the Lynx. That way there are no multiplayer games so the three gorgeous young women sharing my bunker would have no source of entertainment but me.

I considerd the GC for a hot minute based on the Zelda games alone. I know I'd have a lot of fun with the GC, 20 games, and 3 friends.

This is a mildly tough decision for me. On the one hand, my GCN plays gamecube games AND gameboy advance games, which, combined offers one of the greatest libraries in Nintendo history.

But there is so much sega greatness in a 32X-Genesis-CD combo. Fuck Nintendo, Sega through and through. Give me that tower of power, and any random selection of 20 of the best games for the system, and I'd be set for life.

What if you have 3 other friends in the bunker? Are you guys just going to take turns? I love Sega as much as anyone here, but there aren't that many 4-player Genesis games.

Yes? Thats how we played video games in groups when we were kids.

If I had 3 friends with me I'd take the Gamecube. The number of great 4 player games as well as the fun single player games make it an excellent well rounded system.

However if I was by myself or only had 1 or 2 other people to play with I'd take the Saturn.

If I was going to be alone, I'd definitely bring a PlayStation, and a ton of RPGs. If I'm gonna be on my own, I'm gonna want lengthy games with lots of re-playability, so the PlayStation's RPG library is pretty much a no-brainer for me.

If I'm with 1 - 3 other people, definitely a Genesis (with a Team Player adapter). The game selection would vary slightly depending on how many other players there would be, but Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes and NBA Jam TE would definitely make the cut in all cases.

And clearly I don't give a shit about playing only 4 player games.

If people have to take turns, too bad for them! It's my bunker! I'm not gonna give up SoR2 just because everyone can't play it at the same time. :)

yeah, I made my decision thinking that even if there were other players in the bunker it wouldn't always be a multi-player affair. As much as I enjoy that cammaradarie of playing with friends, I also love a meaty single player experience. I would think that being stuck in a bunker would offer the opportunity for both situations.

This is a pretty damn hard choice between the SNES/SFC(great fighters/multiplayer games in general, and games with a mad amounts of replay value), and the PS1(games with mad amounts of replay value, and a more versatile library, but very few actual good Multiplayer games).

Hm there's some damn good games on the PS1, but I'm gonna have to go with the SNES/SFC. If BC was allowed, I hight have been forced to pick the PS2(due to having the best fighters ever made, NIS tactic/RPGs, and then the awesome PS1 library, but without BC, hell no).

SF Alpha 2

FF 5(despite being on the old SFC, this is most likely the 2nd biggest RPG ever made, boy things went down hill, because very few games even come close)

Super Mario All Stars+SMW

Wizardry 5

Lufia 2(that's right, eat time :) ).

FF 6(not only does it have a very good treasure hunting aspect, but there's a multiplayer option as well, which is fun as hell).

Uncharted Waters: New Horizons(This is a must, 6 different char to play, completely open world/randomized discoveries, "you choose how to play", and there is a metric ton of things to do, literally).

Gradius 3(need something to fill my Space shooter urge, and there's even a 2 player option as a bonus)

TMNT4(a awesome beat' em up, and multiplayer)

Street Fighter 2 Turbo

Tactics Ogre

Might & Magic 3

Doom

Dragon Quest 3(not happy about the added Thief class, but seeing how the original is a NES/FC game, I'll have to accept it in this case).

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3(sadly there's no port of the original NES game, that was a masterpiece, but what can you do)

I hate making medium sized lists, they're so hard(small lists no problem, and huge lists are pretty easy as well, but medium sized lists=what a pain).

Up to three players in the bunker? Hmmm, interesting.

In that case I'm agreeing with streetsofrage here and say Nintendo 64. I mean you give me 3 other people with these games:

Then yeah, I'd be pretty much set for life with that lineup and 3 other people to play with. The best multiplayer system ever, hands-down. Hell, you could give me half of that lineup and I'd still pick it. Mario Tennis? Smash Bros? Goldeneye? Mario Kart 64? Magical Tetris Challenge? Multiplayer madness right there.

That really is a tough call. I love my 360 for it's versatile library (when you include disks + the Arcade games), but I remember all the awesome times I had in college with the Saturn + a bunch of controllers. 6 player Guardian hero's arena fights were always a blast. I think it would come down to a fight between those 2 systems. But ultimately I think the 360 would win out due to having a bunch of officially released classic game disks + some great current games + some awesome live titles (even if you're stuck offline with them).

Since it's a bunker, and probably a SHTF situation, I'd say any disk-based system is out of the question, b/c the longevity of the disks will be minimal (especially if I plan to play them often, and more so if I choose compilation titles).

Basically stuff I think is irreplaceable because of sentimental value due to me buying them all at full price at launch all those years ago.

In a 20 games only situation I wouldn't be looking at quality, I'd be looking at game size and replayability. Quality relies in part on tautness and if I were stuck with only 20 games I definitely wouldn't want constant tension.

So I'd select the worst console I've ever played on (Virtual Boy being something else), the Xbox. Games would go something like:

Doom collection (I think there's one).
Halo Triple Pack.

Amped 2.
Madden whatever.

Haha! When I created the thread I never thought to take it as seriously as to choose a cartridge based system because they're more durable than disks. I'm not making fun of the decision, but it's that kind of thinking that would probably scare people away from bringing a 360 (never know when it's going to crap out), or bringing games devoted to the Sega CD.

My fat PS2 feels like it's built like a tank though. Never a hiccup in over a decade :p

After some serious thought, I was thinking it might be the Gamecube, but looking at the 360, it's a great option. Yeah the older units have problems, but they seem to be remedied with the newer consoles.

The wii is insanely durable as well(I must've knocked it over, over a dozen times now, and it still runs as if it were brand new), so It's probally the Nintendo disc systems in general. What I want to know is, what is it that Nintendo is doing so differently(contruction wise), that no other company is doing? Who ever figures that out should tell Sony, and MS right away(they definitely need help in that area).

You're implying an inferiority bias against Sony & Microsoft with anecdotal evidence, when it's the Wii that had the most optical drive problems.

Wii optical drives are off the shelf DVD components and prone to typical failures, so are Microsoft and Sony drives. Wii failures are the most prominent this generation, there are a large number of Wii's that fail after playing dual layer game discs, if they read at all to begin with. Wii is no more durable than the competitors, all use a small chassis prone to heat capture and lead free RoHS solder which needs to be heated enough to potentially damage component lifespan in the manufacturing process. Heat stresses exist more prominently in the other two consoles due to the more modern GPU they each use. Total hardware failure (Not the disc drive) was what caused the RROD/YLOD.


This generation of hardware are all easy to fail. More so the older Xbox 360 and PS3, less so the later ones & the slim versions. Wii's optical drive fails after a few years of wear, most people just opt to mod the system and run game ISOs from USB hard drives. Optical media sucks.

Um the wii is the most durable cosole this gen, so I don't know where you get your info from, wii failures are super rare to the extent that It's likely that the indivual wii systems that failed, were factory defects to beginwith(tries to count all the PS3, and 360 systems that have failed... Damn that's gonna take forever).

I don't have any experience with the wii, but I know that the Gamecube is a well made machine. However, like all consoles, it can still fail. Mine is still working fine, but once you've put enough years into it, the potentiometer will have eventually turned too far, and will no longer read discs. Thankfully, you can open up your Gamecube and carefully turn that screw back a bit, but It'll eventually happen again, and a laser assembly replacement will probably be the easier way to go, and thankfully, it's cheap.

I get my info from being around repair & mod services on all the platforms. The wii used a cheap, shitty optical drive. Most people don't care to call Nintendo, and mod their Wii to run other media and backups. I've explained the failures of the 360 and PS3, those are related to the motherboard and the shitty solder holding the GPU a lot more than the optical drives.

In other words:
Wii doesn't cook itself to death like Xbox/PS3, but their optical drives are shit and they fail more often than you think.

I haven't had the laser/eye die, and I've only heard a few instances of that happening to the wiis, where the 360s usually don't live long enough for there to be a drive problem anyway, and I've heard of many instances with the PS3(the PS3 has many issues, it fries its self, the OS is the worst OS in history, and the drive dies).

Hell in the PS3's case, even the times that the disc drive Isn't dead, it only works properly when it wants to(a ton of different times I had to eject the disc, and reput it in to get the drive to even try reading the disc).

Most people don't mod their wii lol, the people that do that is the group of people, that want to turn it into a master retro emulation machine(and there are huge drawbacks for doing such).

My launch PS3 has had no issues, but it still doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of launch PS3s that don't work anymore. I've heard of people that still have their launch 360s and somehow were lucky enough to never get a RROD.

Yes, I've heard stories of the Wii's graphics chip dying, because people kept the console on when not playing it.
