Given that BASS has been available for free for ages and has been part of every ScummVM-download for almost 10 years now (since 2003), I wouldn't exactly call this one overlooked...


If you want an overlooked and underrated Point&Click-Adventure, I recommend Ankh:



It's funny and has some great Monkey-Island-Inspired dialogues and plot. A "hapless wannabe adventurer stumbles into a greater scheme" type of game, set in the time of egyptian pharaohs. It was one of the first titles in the "German Computer Adventure game" wave of the last ten years to see an international release (at least it reached the UK and Spain, don't know about any US-releases though). As far as I can tell the translation's pretty good, though the voice-acting can be grating at times (but then again, so does the voice acting in BASS ^^). The game did well enough to sport a few sequels here in Germany. Ankh 2 was pretty good, but with part three the series took a bit of a dive. I don't know if any games after Ankh 2 even saw an international release.

/edit: (The video is a trailer for the Sequel Ankh 2 by the way, the only ones I found for the first one were German "Let's Play"-clips)

Ankh looks great, according to Wikipedia, it's a remake of an old Acorn Archimedes game with the same name. Any chance that was released in English?

I can safely say that the 2005-"remake" for PC definitely is available in english, though.

Wiz 'n' Liz takes place in the magical planet of Pum — which the game admits is a silly name — where a group of wabbits have been taken by a spell gone awry, and it's the job of two wizards — Wiz and Liz — to rescue them.

As Wiz or Liz, it's up to you to run around and collect every rabbit...I mean wabbit, and return them to their respected worlds whilst going off against the clock. Add in awesome mini-games, hilarious power-ups, catchy music, addictive gameplay, co-op play and cameos from other great Psygnosis titles, and it all makes for one hellava game.

The Mega Drive's better anyway. As with Puggsy, the Mega Drive version's music is far superior to the Amiga version's.

METAL STOKER for the Pc-Engine (Face/1991)

If you like Granada for the Sega Genesis, than Metal Stoker is a must have. This is basically a rip-off of Granada, but it's a good rip off, with better graphics and sounds. However, the controls aren't as good as Granada, because you have to tap one button to lock your position into place. This game is quite lengthy, and takes about 1 hour to beat. This one will take you a while. I paid about 20 bucks for mines, so its not too expensive.

W (double) Ring for the Pc-Engine (Naxat Soft/1990)

One of the best shooters on the system IMO. On the surface this game may look like another typical shooter, but it has lot of depth. Firstly, each stage has a hidden exist, which takes you to an alternative, more harder version of the stage that you are currently playing. Also, there are hidden power ups in each level, that grant you a alternative firing mode for the weapon that you are using. Also "bonus points" items are hidden in some levels. The visuals and sounds are great for an early card game. I paid 30 bucks for mines, and this seems like a fair price.

Yup, all those 3 are really good, specially the last one.
Metal Stoker would be the absolute awesomeness if it had better controls. Besides that small problem it's a lot better than granada.

X-Out (Commodore Amiga, C64)



I like this shooter because he makes a few things different than the standart formular, and pulls them off quite well. Instead of in space, the game is set under water, with the bosses, most enemies and the player's ship design reflecting that. The upgrade system is rather unique. Instead of collecting powerups, you use your accumulated score for upgrades by spending your points on new guns, sattelites, defense mechanisms and extra lives/ships inbetween levels. Also, the game has a hauntingly beautiful score composed by Chris Hülsbeck.

The Amiga version definitely is the better one, but the C64 port is pretty good as well. I'm impressed about what they were able to wring out of the old 8-bit-breadbox for this game.

C64 X-Out is pretty cool, I don't like the Amiga version much though to be honest it looks really cheap to me, and the screen is zoomed in too much.

I'm going to bring up Whip Rush, there are a lot of shmups on the Mega Drive, and whilst I personally think this is one of the better ones, it tends to not be held in very high regard.

I like the graphics, and the art design, the weapon system is pretty interesting, and the boss fights are elaborate and memorable.

WHIP RUSH is another underrated Genesis shooter....certainly better than most on the system in terms of gameplay.

I agree with Metal Stoker. Face created it, a very obscure company that only developed games for the PCE. Their flag ship character was a odd thing called "Hanii" or "Hany."
