Just kind of curious what the people here game on. Do you run your systems via an old Tube TV? A modern TV, or something else?
I haven't had my old systems hooked up for awhile, and in the meantime I've gotten a new TV and a receiver. I'll be moving soon, but after I have, I will need to figure out how I want to hook up all my older systems again at to not only look good, but to work around any technical issues and not take up any space.
I've had the same Sharp 32" screen tube tv for over 12 years now. I wouldn't dare play anything from the 6th generation and before on anything but a CRT. Actually, I'm even running my Wii on it; and am planning on running my future 360 on it as well. It has served me well. If only I'd know how to fix that broken "On/Off" switch. It requires a unique button.
Most of my REALLY old consoles are on a 21" Toshiba MM20E45 TIMM (CRT). It's got a max resolution of 800x600, so it looks really nice and works quite well with light guns. The newer consoles (N64, Saturn, GC) I run on a 15" Sylvania LCD TV. The PS2 is on my 24" LCD monitor (component input), and the PS3 is connected to HDMI input of the 32" LCD HDTV.
A Sharp 27" CRT TV
All my pre-PS360 consoles are hooked up to a 25" Daewoo flat screen CRT, and I think it's actually an alright TV for what I use it for. Also, I have my modern consoles hooked up to a 24" Sony Playstation 3D display.
Yeah, I have a nice 50 inch Panny Plasma I have all my new stuff hooked up through. And I have a nice Denon receiver. But unfortunately the receiver can't recognize some of the older consoles composite video signal (apparently they output a very weak signal it just doesn't know what to do with, so ignores it). Bit of a shame, but it is what it is. Once I move I'll either need to figure a way to get them all working through that setup, or do a second TV with the audio through the receiver.
I use a Toshiba 40" LCD TV for all of my gaming, but I have a 27" RCA CRT hooked up through a splitter/amplifier as well. So far I haven't found any reason to use the CRT aside from light gun games.
I never got into light gun games really. But there are a few reasons for an older CRT for visuals on older games that use dithering effects. But I'd be fine with loss of authenticity if I could get them all looking relatively nice on mine. I'd need something that takes the input and increases the signal strength enough to get my receiver to pick it up however. I could obviously go for a dedicated upscaler, but I'm not sure what I'd gain from that over just having the receiver do it (unless I spent a ton on the scaler anyways).
I play my consoles through my 32" LG LCD TV, which is pretty good as, for the 4:3 stuff, you can run it either as stretched 16:9 or pillarboxed 4:3, just by changing an option with a button. What sucks is that it doesn't seem to support PAL50 stuff, as most PAL PS2 games run in black and white on this one (unless they were either converted to NTSC/PAL60 or have PAL50/PAL60 support). And from what I tried there's no input lag whatsoever (although the oldest thing I have is the PS2, so I don't know how a retro system may fare)
Sony 32Inch Trinitron, it is HD but handles 480i wonderfully. U use an Jap 21 Pin converter to Component for my Neo Geo and Genesis, just need more cables for the rest of my systems.

I have a 50" Plasma for my XBOX 360.
I use a rca tube tv thats about 12 years old for most of my systems since I still want to be able to play lightgun games from the 80s & 90s. I have the other half of my systems hooked up to a commodor 1084 computer monitor that has composite hookups on the back and the picture quality on it is just as good as a hd tv, i'm not sure what year the monitor was made.
eventually I might get a hd tv to play my ps3 on since the text is small and blurry on my tube tv but i'll always keep at least 1 tube tv for my retro systems to be able to play light gun games with.
I use a Samsung 27" SDTV with a heavily tweaked service mode for all my gaming. Looks great with old stuff, okay with current gen stuff. Someday I'd like to have a huge Panasonic plasma for the new stuff and a big ass Trinitron for SD stuff.
a 42" Sony WEGA LCD TV, and another smaller LCD TV. The games look far better on the WEGA than the smaller newer LCD from about 08, but unfortunately I don't have enough room to hook them all up to the WEGA :(
I have a 42" Panasonic plasma. I stuck with a CRT for the longest time before getting this set a few years ago, and I don't really think the CRT looked significantly better.
I also have a Commodore 1080 monitor, but I'm not using it at all now.
I use a few different TVs... I have an RCA 32" CRT for the usual suspects (90s to 00s consoles), a 27" GE RF only CRT for older stuff... A 27" JVC CRT upstairs with more consoles and a little Goldstar RF only CRT for my 2600 Jr. and Apple //e.
You people and your fancy TVs....all I'm rocking for a TV is my little 10" Toshiba CRT on my desk, which is next to my compy monitors lol.
For all my retro consoles I use a 28" Sony Trinitron CRT TV. It has 2 SCART inputs so have a couple of multi SCART adaptors so all my consoles are connected with this.
I don't have room CRT now so i use my 43 inch 3D Samsung plasma, it does a surprisingly good job once i fiddled with the settings for a bit. I wish i had room for a CRT because House of the Dead and Time Crisis are two of my favourite games of all time, i own them but cannot play them which sucks.
32in Panasonic which I use for my Mega Drives, Saturn and GameCube and a Toshiba 26in HDTV for my Dreamcast/Wii/Xboxes/360/PC/PS2.

Some pretty nice setups here. I think I might just try and find a powered switch or something to get my receiver to know it's getting a video signal. I don't think I want to spend the money on an external up-converter, the denon is pretty good with it, and anything more would probably be pretty stupidly expensive.
a 37" lcd LG tv... 37LH4000 is the model and it handles everything fine except 240p/component.... it's brilliant for rgb-scart stuff though
I only use crt TVs. I try to use s-video or component. I have two 27" crts and two 19".

I have a 14" Sony PVM-1390, which has composite, S-video and RGB through a DB-25 port.
I have a 32 inch sharp TV of 2001, maybe 2003 vintage I bought for $75 from a coast guard officer heading to washington state. I have a 32 inch sharp HDTV I won in 2008 in the bedroom that I barely use. Newest consle I have is an Xbox and it hasn't been hooked in in years.

The 32inch CRT Panasonic is now up in the spare room, but I'm too lazy to lug it down. As for the Toshiba, I replaced that for a 55 inch 4k LG. That's become my main telly; mainly for my American Genesis model 1, Dreamcast, PC and Saturn.Quote:

What's would be the difference between a Genesis on regular k and 4k?
Unless you had an absolutely phenominal 4k upscaler.
Really nothing different from a normal 1080p tv of the same size beyond any differences in the two tv's quality.
Even if you had a super awesome quality 4k scaler, unless it was purpose built to upscale stuff like the genesis it still probably wouldn't make much of a difference.
You really wouldn't - it looks like ass. I'm plugging it straight to the telly itself, no upscaler, via RGB, and it looks washed out as hell.Quote:

I really don't want to use a LCD HDTV. I try not think about it to much.
I keep finding them on the street in great shape. I can't hoard them all. But, damn, are they easy to find. Even Goodwill sells them for $10-$30 a pop. But, since they're in no better shape than the ones people throw away, I just bid my time.
You know after eleven years of watching stuff on a LCD HDTV I still have not gotten use to the ghosting of the image of the refresh rate even on the newest models of TVs I see at friends or family and in stores. Edit: And the screen sizes just keep getting bigger and bigger to me magnifying the issue.
TBH, I'm even torn about playing the Wii on an HDTV. Pretty much everything up to the Wii gets the CRT treatment in my game room. All HD consoles I play on a 1080p screen. But I have been meaning to get a 4K TV (55-60") for my HD consoles.
