Anyone ever do a big move with their collection?

Moving almost 1,000 miles away in less than a month, just wondering if anyone has done a move on this scale or bigger even, and how they did it?

I have the government moving me (because if they fuck something up, hoping it doesn't happen, they will pay for it, instead of me doing it on my own, I have to pay for it) I was thinking of packing up my rare games and I put them in my car as I am driving down, but what would you do? Move it all yourself, or move the rare stuff yourself? Just curious as the last move I did was 12 miles and a few car rides apart.

I say move all your video games and other valuables yourself. Pack everything carefully in boxes with bubble wrap, etc and put it all in a U-haul Trailer. That's what I would do.

Unless you have a complete, down to the detail inventory of your stuff, I definitely recommend moving it yourself. Movers are bonded and insured, but how do you replace rarities that are difficult to find in the first place? Also, there are known thieves working for moving companies. If they pocket a few of your games, would you really know?

I've had to be prepared for a move like this for the last several years, now it seems like that won't happen. Still, I always assumed I'd be packaging all of my games, consoles, peripherals and any other valuables myself and putting them in my cars before any other movers or helpers arrived.

I have it inventoried well but not current. I think I can fit almost all of it - no shit in like four or five tupperware containers. I am going to be moving the rare stuff, the common stuff, I am really not too concerned about to be honest.

Would I know? The common stuff maybe not if anything was stolen but I am going to pack it and maybe ziptie the box or something to know if it has been tampered.

You could always use tamper evident security tape, but it's like $30 a roll w/ shipping. I'll probably have to move my collection as well by the end of the year, and while I don't anticipate leaving Tucson for a while, I'm keeping that tape in mind in case I ever do.

I work for a moving company. Movers treat stuff like shit! If you value it at all, pack it yourself & move it yourself.

Get/rent plastic moving contaners, not cardboard boxes, fill every empty space with packing material.

Movers make shit wages, moving companies make huge profit. Talk to the guys doing the lifting before they start & tell them you will tip them well for being extra gentle. Because a movers 2 favorite sayings are "It's not mine" & "But you tip the Pizza guy!"

A few hundred extra $ could save you some time & a huge headache. Also an added note the company I work for if you read the fine print on our policy it basicaly says we are liable for up to & including $50. For some companies insurance is a bit of a scam.

Thanks. I have quite a bit of stuff, and most people in the service from what I have gathered do it themselves so they can pocket $$$ but I have never heard anything too bad about who the government hires.

Helped a bro out with a relatively modest collection. He had U-Haul and a motorcade of cars and somehow we did it in 1 day. Pain in the ass, but it worked. I wouldn't suggest using movers unless you are moving an entire house to a new location. Use as many friends and family members as possible. Be sure to pay them so you don't piss them off.

Hahaha, my coworkers wouldn't really help even if I paid. I have a full apartment so I have more than games.

Are you military or some other part of the government? I've had friends in the military that had to do government moves and were always really impressed with how well everything was packed. One guy I know said that they even individually wrapped up the pencils in his cup before packing them.

Regardless, for the rare or delicate stuff I'd pack it on my own. You definitely want to be careful with that LaserActive because I've heard they are very easy to get the lifter part of the laser mechanism broken if they're not packed well when shipped. Bubble wrap for some stuff, and free newspapers wadded up for the rest of the majority is what I did. I had to be super duper careful about my Sega CD and Saturn longboxes though, those are a huge pain in the ass to replace!

Yes I am in the military. I am moving my Laseractive and my rare games, and entire DC and Saturn collection myself in my car along with my two desktop computers and some uniforms and clothing for a week or two. I got a place picked out, so if I like it, I'll have my stuff rather fast.

Yeah, I'd never trust anything rare or highly breakable to be moved or packed. While some are very professional and may take good care.. other guys are just there for the paycheck and know that their company is insured... or you're so cheap it's not insured and essentially anything that breaks is no problem.

When I moved all my breakable and/or important stuff was packed in a few boxes and transported in my car with nothing else on top/under/around it that could ever possibly damage it. Everything else went in a truck and was packed like tetris blocks to get the most into the least space.

My cow-orkers helped me move. Broke a ton of my stuff, then told me to "fuck off" when I mentioned they'd done more in damages than hiring a moving company would have cost. I didn't have to move more than 3 miles either.
