3do topic

I couldn't find one here. so I'll start

I got my 3do in the winter of 2009 when I stumbled upon a boxed goldstar for 20 euros in the netherlands with no cables or nothing except the attached power cord. I simply bought it in hopes of it to work. and it did! and still does. over the next 2 years I would acquire around 20-25 3do games and they were all cheap and the true hidden gem I stumbled upon was star control 2. argubaly the biggest game I've ever seen.







It's kind of a love ir ot hate it system but it has a real cult following and against all odds I really love it from the moment I bought it. I also really love early and mid 90s pc/amiga gaming and this system has that well covered. games like panzer general, air combat games, battle chess, early fps games, flashback, another world etc.

I also have a noob question that I can't seem to answer. I bought a boxed 3do goldstar video unit but since putting it in my goldstar I can't access the internal memory and loading of games seems a bit weird. is this normal or is there no reason to really own one?

I actually bought a boxed copy of Way of the Warrior today. The guy I bought it from looked at me and said "This is the best "bad" game I've ever played" and laughed.

I personally like the 3DO. Granted, I didn't buy one until they were well under the $700 they launched, but it's got some great games.

The problem with accessing the memory manager is common. I suggest simply burning one of those demo discs floating around on the net that have a built in memory manager.

The goldstar also has a pretty bad track record for reliability. It both breaks more easily than other 3DO models, and it also has more compatibility issues. At least some of the Goldstar revisions do.

Other than that, 3DO is a great system and a great concept. Look at the similarities to todays consoles..

The only one that has the internal memory manager is the Panasonic FZ-1 3DO. There are a few games (MegaRace for example) that have a memory manager, although you could only delete files on it if I'm not mistaken (the FZ-1's memory manager I think that also had a copy function, or maybe that was Game Guru)

Actually its called FZ-10, the one with the manager.

Bought mine new (FZ-10) when Best Buy was clearing them out for $69.99 and picked up several games also new at $5.00 each.

I have never regretted owning the system. It came with Gex and I picked up Family Feud, Kingdom, Soccer Kid and Space Ace. Since then I have added a few more titles.

Road Rash is still a favorite to play. I have never tried Star Control II but used to play Star Control on the Genesis.

Is Panzer General any good on the 3DO? I have played it on the Playstation and Panzer General II on computer.

Gex is probably my favorite 3DO game, which doesn't sound very impressive because it was massively ported, but I still think of it as a primarily 3DO game. I love platformers, and I feel that Gex is one of the higher quality platformers of the mid 90's. Back upon its release, it had great graphics, and its difficulty curve is decent. It reminds me of DKC a lot.

I also have Road Rash, and its probably my favorite game in the series. I don't mind FMV on the 3DO because it looks very good - almost VHS quality many times. If you like Road Rash, I recommend Need for Speed.

Though I don't play them very much anymore because I own the actual MVS and CPS2 carts, Samurai Shodown and SSF2T are both excellent ports. wing commander III is also a great port.

Those 6 games basically justify the system for me. Stuff like SC2 and Return Fire are just icings on the cake. Pretty good system, its reputation is kinda sad because, unlike the jaguar, the 3DO had a bunch of high profile great games. Its price tag killed it.

Thanks for the info TheSonicRetard. It is hard to buy new games for newer systems when there are so many older titles I would rather find.

Just got my 3DO in the mail yesterday. I've got a complete Gex and a few loose discs so I haven't seen too much of the library yet. I'll definitely buy a bunch of games if I can find them.

I must say I love 3DO boxes. They're so unnecessarily large. But they look great!

There are several different designs of 3DO boxes - some, like Wing Commander 3, are simple shoe-box design, while some, like Way of the Warrior, are cardboard clamshell boxes. The best 3DO boxes are the ones by EA - the ones that are clamshell, but have the snapping piece of plastic on the right hand side of the box, with a plastic casing on the inside. Those boxes, to me at least, are the quintessential 3DO box, and what I think of immediately when I think of the console.

Is there a website that I can buy 3do consoles for under $100? From when I search ebay and the like, they all seem to go much higher. I'd like to get a 3do (always wanted one) but my budget only allows for $100.

There's a shop here in houston that sells working FZ-1 model 3DOs for $115. If you're dying for one, we can work something out where I'll pick it up and ship it to you at cost.

This is one of the systems I still would like to have, along with the Atari Jaguar. But I'm waiting until I can get it for a really good price on ebay or on Craigslist. There's a lot of good games that to me look like they'd be pretty cool to have, a lot moreso than the Jaguar. I can say for sure though, that Plumbers Don't Wear Ties is a title that I would love never to have or spend money.

no. the goldstar 3do also has internal memory program build in. however since inserting the goldstar video unit I can't acces it anymore. that's why I wondered if the video unit has any use at all or I will just take it out.

if you like the pc games then you will like this. it's the same awesome game. panzer general 2 was awesome too. I owned it for pc long time ago. the controls for 3do take some getting used to but it's not much and it's turn based so you have all the time to figure it out.

the best 3do box that I've seen if of cpu bach. the most expensive looking videogame box I've ever seen.

the front of the box, which is like ea, is like a thick page you can turn and then you see the inserts, with all info about bach, sid meier and briggs I think. you see a circle in which the cd is placed but you can't get it out via that. you have to slide it out. man I couldn't believe when I bought my sealed cpu bach last summer. if you like classical music or baroque music in general it's awesome music "program" basically and exlusive. sid meier has always been genius

The 3DO has always eluded me. I remember when I first got to play it -- my S.O. wanted me to do something with her brothers and videogames were the only thing we had in common. I guess it was all good because before that, she never cared much for me playing videogames. Anyways, I had a Genesis while they had a 3DO. We had mostly the same games, Road Rash, Super Street Fighter II, and Star Control (though they had SCII, of course). I was really impressed with the graphics until I found out the price tag of $700. I just couldn't afford it.

I had a friend open his first business, a videogame store, so I got to demo a lot of the new 3DO titles for free. He wanted me to work for him but I wasn't interest in a job, just the games! He's the one that gave me my second Jaguar (I think he was just going to throw it out, actually).

I took a job with Panasonic not long after that and though they gave an employee discount on their 3DO, you could only get it if you bought through the company store. Even with discount, the company store price was higher than the now somewhat discounted retail price of a 3DO.

As the years passed, I ended up buying almost all of the games that I liked for the 3DO on other systems: Road Rash, Need for Speed, Space Hulk, Street Fighter II Turbo, Return Fire, Jammit, Wing Commander 1 & 3, Gex, etc. I lost interest in some of the others like Immercenary. The only one that I never got that I wanted was Star Control II though I'm not as much into the single player mode and didn't really know anyone willing to play the versus mode anymore; besides, I still had Genesis Star Control if I did.

I haven't thought about getting a 3DO for a long time but it always seems impractical. Too expensive when it was new and too expensive just to get for one game now. I suppose it's a good collector's system but I just don't have the spare cash just to buy it to sit on a shelf. I'm not trying to put down the 3DO, really, I guess I'm more looking for a good excuse to buy one. Are there any "must-have" exclusives?

Also painfully slow at filling out orders. I've literally had to wait a few months on him before. Only bother with him if you have PATIENCE. Even then, he constantly lists things on his site that he doesn't have in stock... and has in stock stuff that he doesn't have listed. He just doesn't bother to update often. Basically, it's just laziness to the extreme... which is very annoying when you are trying to spend money on him!

I also have an FZ-1, but I haven't had much time to play it or seek out some games. I've downloaded some though, but I'm out of CD-Rs...

Out of pure curiosity, I'd love to try out the Putt-Putt games. Are there any other H-E releases on 3DO other than those?

it depends on what genres you like. still I would like to point out that road rash, wing commander 3 and need for speed for instance are a lot better than on the psx. not to get a 3do for just that but when you get one. get those as well and all 3do games are basically very cheap anyway


star control 2 is amazing. I only play the single player though. recently restarted again because the game is so huge and it is easy to get lost and fail. me I liked a number of other games as well. like dunegeons and dragons slayer, panzer general, battle chess, cpu bach, fifa soccer(exclusive 3do 1994 version) D, return fire death o maps(exclusive sequel) and star fighter, but this is a very personal taste. you may not like any of them.

I wouldnt say all 3DO games are very cheap. Some can be, most are not. Ive seen prices rise steadily with time and you have to pay 30-40 dollars for a boxed copy with manual, of any of the popular/good games on the internet. I cant speak for pawnshops, thriftstores etc. But in general, no, 3DO titles are not very cheap. Genesis are far cheaper in comparision.

That said they are for the most part still affordable and worth getting if you have a 3DO.

I'm not sure if it's one of my most or least proud gaming moments but I did play Plumbers Don't Wear Ties to the end.

this is absolutely not true at all. go to ebay.com and you'll find almost any 3do game fro 10$ or around that complete in box. games like road rash or need for speed even cheaper.

3DO is one of two remaining that I do not yet have on my list of systems to own.

Everything I have seen on the system looks amazing.

I tend to think that the 3DO was the Xbox of its day. It took PC games over to a game console and did them with amazing graphics and sound for the time. Kind of how Microsoft moved over from its PC gaming roots to the Xbox console in 2000.

One day soon I will have 3DO...

except that microsoft and xbox and their overkill of repetetive fps games suck. but it is correct. it's especially a machine by ea, to try out new things. their sports games on 3do were exlusives. madden and fifa were incredibly revolutionary on 3do, there was also foes of ali and pga that were new and different. I can't imagine how much ea must have lost on the machine because clearly their 3do endeavours in software were very high budget.

Loose discs are cheap, but complete longbox games usually go for more than $10. To wit:

Need for Speed - OK, this one is a cheapie; someone even got a CIB copy for $1.99
Road Rash - there's one weird outlier at $6.04 (auction had a bad description), but the next cheapest completed auction is $12.99 w/ no manual
Return Fire - longbox went for $19.99 shipped
Samurai Shodown - no completed auctions, but a sealed copy is currently at $29.99 shipped
Star Control II - recent completed auctions start at $26.09 for an auction with longbox & manual but no disc, and go way up from there
Super Street Fighter II Turbo - last CIB copy went for $13.25 + shipping w/ a beat-up longbox; damn Ebay stock photos make it hard to tell whether other auctions were actually complete or just "complete" minus longbox, but it looks to be a $15-20 game
Way of the Warrior - last copy went for $15.54 + shipping
Wing Commander III - this one's also a cheapie, and seems to hover around $10 plus or minus a few bucks

So I think it depends. Some games are in that range, sure, but most of the desirable titles have definitely crept up. I suspect you're going to see the genuine CIBs (i.e. with longbox) go a lot higher in the next 3-4 years.

It's a cool system, I had one and a large library of games. It was neat to finally own the 32 bit system of my childhood dreams only to really not care once I finally got it.

Captain Quazar is a rad game and I don't get why nobody ever mentions it when they talk about 3DO games.

Boxed 3DO systems still aren't too hard to find I might add, there are dozens out there!

The only "expensive" things for the 3DO are Street Fighter, Doom and strangely enough the Woody the Woodpecker episodes which you need a video card to watch and good luck finding one.

I have Toon Time in the Classroom and do not need a video card to watch. It seems it would be close to the Woody WoodPecker episodes.

CPU Bach looks nice! Sid Meier is the best. Always wished Nintendo would have released RailRoad Tycoon for the Super Nes.

Anybody ever play the Horde or Lemmings on 3DO?

Yeah and we all know how representative ebay is for actual pricing, dont we.... I didnt say you can never find a deal online, but i stand by my comments, which are backed by collecting 3DO for 15 odd years. If you are happy with a "complete" boxed game which looks like its been through war, sure you may find a NFS copy for $10 or less, but if you want one that looks somewhat decent or better you will need to double that at least. As of this moment on ebay, you are looking at $27+, and that copy isnt even pictured. for road rash we are looking at $17+. (couple of japanese editions for less). To elaborate i was refering to complete US longbox games. If you are happy with just a jewelcase you might get those a little cheaper i suppose.

But go ahead, tell people im not telling the truth, i just cant see why i WOULD lie about it. I would love to buy complete games in good condition at $10 or less.. If you find more deals on great games, feel free to share them with me, id love to expand my 3DO collection with cheap good games in good complete condition.

here. see many games around 10$ mark. also if you;ve been collecting for 15 years there's no excuses as you could get the best deals. don't bother with overpriced buy it now auctions. but you will find some good ones between them. especially when you are doing this for 15 years.

Like i said, been refering to LONG BOXES, in good condition. And besides, most games on ebay.nl are evidently definetly more expensive than $10... Especially the long boxes.

long boxes are just the usa versions. regular cases are pal versions or sometimes also usa versions.

Looks to me like the only expensive thing with 3DO collecting is the system itself. And what I mean by that is that there's tons of cheap games that look all right. I'll pick one up when I find a cheap one on Craigslist or ebay.

Yeah, and then you get serious about collecting, and you start looking at $200-300 or upwards 1500 for certain titles and rare accessories. Trust me when i say that collecting for the 3DO is not "cheap". Just because some very common games are "cheap", does not mean that it is cheap to collect for the system. Its far cheaper to collect for the Genesis.

That said, you should definetly pick one up if you find one that fits your budget for a 3DO console, its well worth it.
